UTEP Basketball Recruiting

Yes, and there is a good chance they get newton, givance and another forward from sfa. Zachery, givance, and McKinney give them three solid options at the 1.

This was a pick up basketball game (with other college players) that got over-heated with trash talking leading to fists, and fists leading to him using a knife. His defense thought the legal process was fair. From Malik POV he (and his lawyer) stuck to self-defense. Story brough back a lot of memories from my youth and while rapiers nor guns were not used, heated exchanges were common on the court. I don't see it as a second chance but him needing to get the hell out of NY because part of me believes him, but then again, you have to keep a cool head when the others hit above 105.

This new Miner has good vision and ball handling skills. Good awareness within 15' and a nice shooting stroke. His brush with the law is not a big deal, it's not at all but he does now have to be cool because it's a spot on his record.

Good pick up by Golding.

"Zachery, a 6-foot-2 guard, graduated from West Genesee in 2018. He took a year at Commonwealth Academy in Springfield, Massachusetts, before spending the next two years at Chipola Junior College in Florida. He signed with the University at Buffalo in 2020, but in the fall of that year, he got into a fight involving players from UB and Canisius.

Zachery was accused of stabbing a Canisius player in the leg. North Tonawanda police arrested Zachery two days after the incident and charged him with second-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. In May of 2021, Zachery agreed to a reduced charge of third-degree assault, a Class A misdemeanor. He did not have to serve any time in jail.

Following the resolution of the legal matter, Zachery, who had remained enrolled at Buffalo throughout the 2020-21 academic year, left the school.

This past season at South Plains, Zachery averaged 7.9 points per game. South Plains went 21-11 and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NJCAA tournament.#

This is a productive big in the portal that can play immediately. Don't know how good he is but his numbers say he's been productive.
21 and 5 with 3 blocks against Arizona.

Woukd love to have a shot at this guy. Should be a good get for WKU, UAB, NMSU or somebody random.

The last four years Milwaukee has gone 40-75 with its best season of 12-19. I expect him to land there.

We have no shot at him if Duquesne offers. 😀
LOL.

In all seriousness, they are in a solid conference (A-10) and in their minds (and rightly so, I must admit) their fans and recruiters probably wondered "why would he choose UTEP (when he can play in the A-10)?"

The thing is we've seen players with similar stats that we were recruiting go to teams we consider worse off than us.
I get it. For my own peace of mind I’m choosing not to feed into that narrative, even if only jokingly. Yet.

I think the guys we are getting are on the same level as the guys we’re not getting. Golding may not be acquiring all that rapidly, but the talent level of who we’re getting is on par. Time will only tell if I’m right.

With that said, I do think this guy could go P5.

I hope you're right. Some of the guys we've lost out to 9 and 6 win teams were guys that have proven they can put up double digit numbers at D1 universities. The guys we've signed still have question marks about their game at this level.

ORU got a 7’3” transfer. Either the hype on here that Golding must have a true big is now a full blown virus inside of me or reading that ORU and other mid majors are landing some decent bigs is like a flash mob, all hype and 2 minutes of energy but forgotten history you just move on from.

Fair enough.

I’m on the tail end of a seemingly looong school year. I guess I just don’t have the energy to speculate or critique too much.

I could turn out to be be very wrong about Golding’s ability to get us where we want to be. I’ll know more by the end of next year.

Know this. I won’t hesitate to jump off the Golding bandwagon if it’s rolling along at too slow of a pace. I won’t stick with a guy just to prove a point. Until that time comes, though….

There are tons of bigs in the portal, but can they play is a whole different can of frijoles.

And he hopes your other bars close down!

If he’s not with us, then he’s against us!!!!!
LOL
I'm not a fan of kids transferring. If your coach leaves, I get it. If you are #8 player at Duke, I get it.
I have a buttload of respect for Z who stuck it out with a new coach and is still here. If the kids were THAT good, they would be going pro and not Xavier.
To sum it up, I hope they regret transferring.

Butttttt, his coach, Rodney Terry, did leave.

He doesn’t have to win the conference tournament to get into the NCAA tournament now, he can finish in 7th place and get in.

Maybe his goal is playing in the NCAA. That’s a lot easier at Xavier than it is at UTEP.

And he transferred here from another school. It’s okay for UTEP to take transfers, but we shit on them for leaving? We’re you opposed to his enrollment here? His coach didn’t leave USF to give him one of your “excuses”.

I think it's only fair that students have the one time transfer option. However, one time should mean one time. If a student has used that one time transfer option, they should not get to use the graduate transfer option, in addition imo.

Nothing more than toddlers in a toy store enamored by all the colors, shapes, noises and options, moving from isle to isle.

I agree. Note, the one time transfer exception was already in place for most non-revenue sports, so this is not newly written NCAA regulation. The NCAA, who we know picks and chooses how and who they impose regulations on, should be consistent across all types of sports in my opinion. Then again, the entire concept of the NCAA is a conflict of interest in terms of revenue generation and legitimate regulation.
