UTEP Basketball Recruiting

Ok real question 🙋 Are players that still have eligibility on National teams such as Puerto Rico, Mexico, Venezuela, Columbia etc… as good as American D1 players? I feel like maybe it’d be wise to play to El Paso’s strengths and grab the best Latin international players they can. Not in any way saying that’s all they should recruit, but since Fili and to a smaller extent Ayala, I don’t think any Utep coaches have tapped into this potential. Now even more so with the NIL giving some of these players an opportunity to help their families. Also these players would receive even more love in a Hispanic community if they do well. Idk just a random thought!

Do yall remember that fat kid Tim Floyd brought in from Cali cause he could really shoot? I think he quit half season.

Are there a quality Mexican or Venezuelan floating about? Bum Americans/Bum Latin Americans. Six of one, a half dozen of the other.

He has no eligibility left, but players that no longer have eligibility are being advised to get a 5th year.

It’s the NIL lawsuit plus the Covid year that many athletes received. Add that to the fact the NCAA seems to lose every lawsuit.

It’s pretty likely that athletes will get to play 5 years of college sports. Thus, Kevin Kalu is in the portal.

I thought it was a joke

Gonna be interesting to see how this plays out.

A lot of Seniors saying it’s not fair that because of Covid, guys got 5 years but now I only get 4 in the NIL era. JC players get more years now too.
It was stupid to give that Covid year to basketball players. Season was over for most schools anyway. I could see them doing it for baseball, but not any other sports.

If anybody deserves it it's Kalu. Hard working 4 year senior with a big body. I would actually have liked him to stay under different circumstances, but hopefully he can get somewhere else and shine.

I think since we lost our women’s tennis program, Senter and Golding promised them men’s basketball scholarships as an apology. So we only need a few more signees
