There really are some Debbie downers on this board. I’m going to take the win and hope this bye week gives our team, especially the offense, time to work on some much needed things. I for one can’t wait for the UTSA game and now it looks like it will mean something. I also hope that El Paso will really show up. Like I said earlier, I’m bringing about 10 UTSA alumni and I would love them to see what the Sun Bowl can really look like. But before UTSA, we have to take care of FAU, who has been tough at home. I don’t know about you but I’m ready to break the eastern time zone curse and this team has a chance to do it! Yes…I have drunk the Kool Aid and it is good!!
I saw last night a total clean up and more efficient offense but the play calling is still befuddling.
-Way less penalties and no major drive killing penalties, too.
-Way less dropped passes. There were some dropped passes but all were off target by Hardison and the WR's caught, then made some nice moves.
-D Line as stated over and over, looked like the Super Bowl Tampa Bay Bucs and Kendall was Mahommes squirming for every inch of turf to to make a pass. What a freaking outstanding performance.
-Hardison stood in the pocket like a NFL veteran.
-Efficient transition during downs. Not once did I see players running in and out like a Chinese fire drill. Only once did I witness Hardison hurry up the sideline for the next play. Much cleaner last night.
-Special teams was much, much better last night and a total 180 from what was witnessed in Boise. It was clearly obvious the coaching staff worked on the special teams because it showed. Smoke Harris was a non factor.
The bad
-Players have so-so games and just not doing their part. Those fumbles were very strange in the fact they typically do a good job protecting the ball. Flores was laser focused and with more bulk up he can be a major contributor next year. However, the O line probably faced the best D line in CUSA. Way, way to much run penetration by the bulldogs.
-Hardison's arm doesn't know it's own strength. He has John Elway arm strength but Dak Prescott leanings. He throws it where he shouldn't during big games. He keeps over throwing and the short game, while getting better, still lacks finesse, but he's getting there.
-Dimel offensive play calling is getting better but if the opponent is giving Cowing green open pastures give it to Cowing more often. Dimel went to the RPO Brownholtz option to put the clock in Miner favor. That's great for one yard goal line or 4 and 1 but against team like a La Tech is not a good idea. Dimel was lucky the D was on fire and held it's ground because you don't give La Tech any extra inch.
-"Go to the ball". The wr's secured the catch, then made NFL moves. That was nice. However, the Bulldog db's were playing tight coverage and the receivers were not going to the pass otherwise and giving La Tech db's a chance for break up or interception. Also, going to the ball makes it that much easier for a ref to throw an interference flag.
-O line needs to get better push on run plays. Pass protection was good, not great, but good.
