UTEP LA Tech Game Thread

It's annoying to always have something negative to say. We bit*h cuz we wouldn't win games. We win games. We b*tch cuz they're shitty teams. We beat a team many said we couldn't. We bi*tch cuz we didn't blow them out.

At what point do we stop moving the goal post and realize this is Dimel’s ball? The same coach every one on this board wanted fired. Give him some credit instead of always having shit to say.

Season still has a ways to go. Terry was the toast of this board after that “good” start to the 2019-20 season. Look how that turned out.

Let's get to that point first.

"Do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself."

I've seen a lot of good points from both sides.

We could be scoring more just the same way we could be going 3 n out and turning it over more.

Our defense as good as it is, is cuz of the short amount of time it spends on the field.

How do we know it won't wear down and concede if they're forced to spend an extra 10 minutes per game on the field?

This formula is working.

Blowing out teams and having a high scoring offense hasn't translated into anything for us in the past. We're still going on 55 years without a bowl win or outright conference title.

Y'all go ahead and find something to complain about and worry about things that haven't occurred yet.

Look someone was cold at the game yesterday. Go correct him NoWins and tell him he wasn't cold.

I wasn’t at the game, so I don’t have first hand knowledge. However, I do know that “cold as ****” or “super cold” do not describe the weather yesterday. Glad you’re scouring the internet for this to bring to my attention.

Poped up on my time line and since you felt the need to correct me when I said it was cold I thought it was your thing. You even dug up weather almanacs from 2014 to prove I wasn't cold.

There really are some Debbie downers on this board. I’m going to take the win and hope this bye week gives our team, especially the offense, time to work on some much needed things. I for one can’t wait for the UTSA game and now it looks like it will mean something. I also hope that El Paso will really show up. Like I said earlier, I’m bringing about 10 UTSA alumni and I would love them to see what the Sun Bowl can really look like. But before UTSA, we have to take care of FAU, who has been tough at home. I don’t know about you but I’m ready to break the eastern time zone curse and this team has a chance to do it! Yes…I have drunk the Kool Aid and it is good!!

Thank you! It seems like a lot of fans are waiting for this team to fail I'm waiting for them to make history.

Broke the Skip Holtz 0-11 losing streak, beat La Tech at home for the first time since 1939. Next goal, break the east coast curse.

Holy Guacamole!
I had a family birthday celebration last night so I could only follow the game on my phone. I will watch later, but I'm curious about a couple of points.
What's the explanation about the quick offensive start ...14 pts; then nothing? Noticed a couple videos of the game and it sure appeared to be more than 18k. Is that legit?

Hard to believe what these guys have accomplished. I'm in awe!

Imo turnovers and early incomplete passes from Hardison. He also had a few that should have been intercepted. Dimel didn't want to risk it and turned to running but that also backfired as we kept fumbling.

I saw last night a total clean up and more efficient offense but the play calling is still befuddling.

-Way less penalties and no major drive killing penalties, too.
-Way less dropped passes. There were some dropped passes but all were off target by Hardison and the WR's caught, then made some nice moves.
-D Line as stated over and over, looked like the Super Bowl Tampa Bay Bucs and Kendall was Mahommes squirming for every inch of turf to to make a pass. What a freaking outstanding performance.
-Hardison stood in the pocket like a NFL veteran.
-Efficient transition during downs. Not once did I see players running in and out like a Chinese fire drill. Only once did I witness Hardison hurry up the sideline for the next play. Much cleaner last night.
-Special teams was much, much better last night and a total 180 from what was witnessed in Boise. It was clearly obvious the coaching staff worked on the special teams because it showed. Smoke Harris was a non factor.

The bad
-Players have so-so games and just not doing their part. Those fumbles were very strange in the fact they typically do a good job protecting the ball. Flores was laser focused and with more bulk up he can be a major contributor next year. However, the O line probably faced the best D line in CUSA. Way, way to much run penetration by the bulldogs.
-Hardison's arm doesn't know it's own strength. He has John Elway arm strength but Dak Prescott leanings. He throws it where he shouldn't during big games. He keeps over throwing and the short game, while getting better, still lacks finesse, but he's getting there.
-Dimel offensive play calling is getting better but if the opponent is giving Cowing green open pastures give it to Cowing more often. Dimel went to the RPO Brownholtz option to put the clock in Miner favor. That's great for one yard goal line or 4 and 1 but against team like a La Tech is not a good idea. Dimel was lucky the D was on fire and held it's ground because you don't give La Tech any extra inch.
-"Go to the ball". The wr's secured the catch, then made NFL moves. That was nice. However, the Bulldog db's were playing tight coverage and the receivers were not going to the pass otherwise and giving La Tech db's a chance for break up or interception. Also, going to the ball makes it that much easier for a ref to throw an interference flag.
-O line needs to get better push on run plays. Pass protection was good, not great, but good.

Fumbles. One drive was gashing the Bulldogs, then Hankins dropped the bread which killed a great drive. Credit to La Tech for putting hat on ball all night.

And I will eat my words and give credit to.....[throwing up in my mouth].... NoWins as far as crowd size, he called it all week and was correct. He doesn't know college athletics worth a lick and acts like he does and just makes up shit as the week goes along just to be annoying but he did point out the ticket sale discrepancies. 18,468 only showed up. It is, what it is. Now is the time when UTEP needs a Mike Price to start shaking hands and kissing babies like a congress politician.

Look. If UTEP was more aggressive on offense and we turned the ball over cuz of our lack of qb play and we lost. How many would be complaining?
I've watched LA Tech all year long. They struggle mightily against the pass — especially short passes. Teams go entire games against them with an imbalanced offense throwing short passes. Tech has been unable to stop it all year. That game last night was unnecessarily close. Utep could have easily scored 3 or more touchdowns with more pass heavy play calling. All in all, I am happy the Miners won. You definitely have a good team this season.

Says the guy that predicted 30k and said the 2012 Miners beat #12 Houston. Also said that the Miners were beating down Utah St at halftime of a game they were losing and had scored 3 points.

This is right on the money.
I truly believe we could have scored in the 40’s if not for the fumbles, a poor decision from Hardison and Dimel’s fear of losing.

I saw the new tailgating area for students and it was packed to the max. Looked like good times.
Yeah and did you see the mess they left behind, broken bottles and trash everywhere. Won’t be long before they take that away.

I did see it but didn't want to sound like this guy

The mess from the student tailgate in the parking lot was bad and should be mentioned but the guy complaining about trash in the stadium is too much. I expect UTEP fans to find something to complain about even when we win but this is over the top. Do you know who is thankful for all the trash in the stadium? The person that is provided a job in cleaning in up.

I’ve been openly critical of Dimel, but I also give him his due. I think the majority of us, questioned even the new coaches he brought in. That seems to be paying off for the most part. I thought it was interesting to hear him speak after the win. As much as we want him to drive up the score, he won’t. He does what it takes to win. Which is good as well. Dimel deserves his props, and if he continues to win, deserves his extension. I think we all can agree, it’s nice seeing the Miners win! Nothing wrong with folks coming on here and giving their opinion, that’s what the forum is for. Just don’t let that overtake the positive’s from this season. It will over take you. I’m pretty excited to see what happens! Go Miners!

It’s like that at any major event, everywhere. It’s expected.

Imo it seems those that predicted he would fail are the biggest advocates of running up the score. Since they were wrong about him not winning now they moved the goal posts and want to find something to justify their dislike of Dimel.

I don't think it has anything to do with running up the score or Dimel hate... more a concern about slowing down too soon and predictable playcalling that could bite us eventually.

The defense was lights out against LA Tech but FAU at their place, UTSA, UAB on the road won't be a lock to shut down.

I see the argument that slowing the game down helps our defense stay fresh... doesn't mean you run into a wall three plays in a row just to bleed clock. There has to be a better type of ball control offense we could be running.

Those are good points. If your backs are fumbling left and right, your qb had one interception with some bad throws, and two more passes that should have been picked it's easy to understand why Dimel goes conservative.

I'll stand on my hill and die alone that the probability of us losing was much greater than us blowing out LT.

If you’re going to bleed the clock, bleed the clock. There were several times they snapped the ball with 10+, 6, 7, seconds still on the play clock. If you’re just going to hand off or do the dumb Brownholtz plays, snap it at 1 or 2. I believe one of the time outs they took, there was still 15 seconds on the play clock. Why not take it 10 seconds later?
