UTEP vs. LA Tech

LOL @ Phil Johnson

Did anyone hear his hilarious/rambling post game interview?

Good lord, shame on Floyd he should have done that one.

Johnson sounded so, so stupid, and did not have his usually decent (at best) comments or answers Always has to throw shade on players who go off on us saying Erik McCree or their team didn't care to play defense. Uh Phil, you're team didn't score for seven minutes in the second half, STFU.

Can't stand that douche, he's worse than Tim and even more delusional, if it wasn't for CTF he wouldn't have a hot chick, or a career.

He actually called out a player from LA Tech? I couldn't bring myself to even watch the game.

That small bit was all he said, nothing too crazy, but still just tip your hat. McCree is a really good player, felt Johnson should have shown way more respect to someone who just went off for 19&11.

Floyd:

“I was proud of how our guys played for a half,” UTEP coach Tim Floyd said. “It looked like when Matt Willms went down with his injury, we just lost a lot. We have been challenged with our bench all year long. Attrition really catches up to us when we get to our bench. From the three spot where we lost Lee Moore and Josh McSwiggan, we have had real issues. Tonight between Jake Flaggert, Trey Touchet and Deon Barrett, we had 52 minutes and 0-for-8 from that position. We can’t seem to find the right spark to come in and give us a lift there.”

At the beginning of the season, Floyd kept commenting(and he basically kept bashing) Kelvin Jones on how raw he was. Floyd publicy told stories about how Jones didn't know what a screen was, how Jones didn't know what the ACC was before the Wake Forest game. My question is, instead of bashing a Freshman for being raw, why not recruit and have some other low post players on your roster, who you can depend on instead? This way you don't have to constantly publicy criticize a Freshman that you chose to heavily lean on, for being so saw. Kelvin Jones had been on Campus for a full year, yet it wasn't until the start of this season that Floyd realized that he was raw? After 7 years of building a program, whose fault is it, that there wasn't another mature "non-raw" player on the roster to play that role?

I'm sure we'll get lucky and maybe win another game since there are so many other shitty teams in our conference but what do you think will be our final record? 4-26 is my guess.

Excuse me correction checked other scores and noticed Southern Miss beat UTSA by almost 20. Our super bowl got just tougher I don't know if we will win another game this season let alone two more.

Hear that this is the first time UTEP bball has lost 11 games in a row in something like 34 years. Have to look that up though.
After the game I heard Johnson say they thought they could steal this game tonight if UTEP just did a better job making their shots.... no kidding.

I wish it was that bad try more like 64 years. Finished 4-21 .160 that year. Currently sitting at 2-12 .142.

I hate to say this but I don't look at the final scores any more. It's pretty certain the Miners will lose the rest of their games this year. I've given up on this team and just wish the season was over. To think that our basketball program was for many years our pride and joy is just unreal. There are High School coaches in El Paso who would do a better job than Floyd. How did things get this bad? Floyd and staff should be ashamed to cash their payroll checks.

Typical Floyd response. Referring to players that left is his MO because he always has plenty of them to refer to.

Sorry Coach but attrition caught up to you long before you got to your bench last night! But if you were honest with yourself and us fans it's not really about attrition at all. That's a false narrative you keep harping on. Fact is you haven't recruited the players needed to compete in even a watered down conference, you don't develop the players you have well enough, and you can't keep players from leaving you. Stop excusing yourself from your responsibility for every phase of your program. YOU are the one responsible.

Same old story, over and over...All the missing players!!! Funny that he doesn't mention Terry Winn. He wouldn't have been a complete difference maker, but I guarantee we would be able to compete with him in the lineup.

What's funny to me is that CTF talks more about the players he doesn't have than who he does have. And when he does talk about his roster, he paints such a grim picture...like he somehow just got stuck with theses guys...guys he friggin recruited and at one time or another said he thought they'd be really good with some development.

He has been by far the worst recruiter of talent that I have seen at UTEP. He has been by far the worst at player development that I've ever seen at UTEP. Those two ingredients, when sub-par, will always yield sub-par results.

If the man has any pride, he'll step down at season's end.

Very well stated

Ok, he needs to go but he has stated this team is working hard despite the setbacks. The season has nine weeks left and it will be over.

Tim Floyd said this after the 2010-2011 season when talking about Hooper Vint. Same shit he says today.

'I love his ability to pass the basketball. Given our situation with the players we lost, he has a great opportunity to play next year.'

LA Tech is consistently one of the top performers in the conference in both football and basketball. We hear talk that El Paso is not a destination city but compared to Ruston?

What exactly is the magic down in Ruston that makes it the jewel of Conference USA, attracting all these recruits?

I see the kids are working hard. I am in no way knocking on THEM. I even refrain from stating anything objective about specific players because they are doing what they can.

My gripe is only with Floyd...and Stull...and now Dr Natalicio.

Yeah, I vaguely remember that. This is just an example of the proof in regards to his lack of ability to identify the necessary talent, and furthermore, it demonstrates his lack of ability to coach a kid up and develop him. Evidence of both of my previous points.

Easy, geography. I always wondered the same thing about Tulsa, well take a quick glance at a map and see how close they are to the hot recruiting grounds of north and east Texas. The fan support sucks for both but, "hey, it's close to home."

Don't buy it. Tulsa is a city of about half a million on the order of El Paso. Ruston has a population less than a tenth the size. At Tulsa and El Paso, at least, you have civilization and culture that any city of that size would provide. They might be isolated, but they ARE the city. Also as for Tulsa, the university, it's a small private school that ranks in the top 100 schools in the USNews rankings, so some players are drawn there just seeking a good private school education at a free ride cost.

Ruston is on the other side of the state from New Orleans. It's closer to Dallas, which is only 250 miles away. Isolated, and is NOT the city. Is there really that much talent "close to home" after all the big boys down there have already had their pickins? I guess Karl Malone, Paul Millsap, and Tim Floyd all played for LA Tech, so there are diamonds in the rough, but are they the once-a-decade exception or the rule?

Here is why this recruiting area thing is straight BS. I've heard it on SportsTalk and from Floyds mouth.

Basketball players at the high school level are now moving as teenagers away from home to play at prep academies. Wilms went from Canada, to Michigan, to Nevada, before UTEP. Winn was in Arizona, but is from Louisana. They play in AAU games all over the county. Majority are from single parent homes. These guys aren't tied down to any area. They chase playing time.

The argument that players won't come here because of isolation is a myth, and I am dead ass right.
