UNM Lobos football

IMO, Walden should automatically get three years to show gradual improvement. However, if after those three years his record sits at 9-27 with only seven FBS wins, history at UTEP makes it pretty clear that he’s not the guy to get it done.
Based on history, Walden is already on pace to be a failure. There’s not one coach that did well after winning 2 games his first year. Maybe he gets to 3 games with a NMSU win.

People like you like to claim I am not a UTEP fan, but you don’t even know how long Mike Price coached here. One can argue he’s the “greatest ever” here. He coached here for 9 seasons and that’s not even counting the half year when he took over for Kugler.
Nope. You broke bread with Corona, or rather a hamburger or hot dog, so you mean business.

What I don't get is what specifically do you want? UTEP can't win a bowl, but did go under Dimel, Kugler, Price (3 bowls) and Nord. That's twenty five years. Golding under performs. I get it. It's not UTEP faults a coach bolted for UT. Who in they hell would have thought an allegation hundreds of miles away would touch UTEP Basketball coaching?! Floyd won here. Just one at large pick away and no doubt he would've retired on HIS terms. Not on your or others self diagnosed terms that got unnecessarily ugly.

Senter is not Bob Stull college business smooth. The Dimel hire should have never happened. Golding?! Please, everyone was for him or Jerome Tang. Senter showed his hand towards Doc according to some, but Senter chose a top two fan pic. Walden? Same thing as Golding process. He had no big win but UTEP fans wanted youth. Well, Senter went young coach. Scotty had respect among FBS world. Loss to S. Utah was not Senter's fault. He does have two ugly FCS losses though (N. Arizona and SU) and his job is to cut checks for those games, not expect a loss. MW? We're in and UTEP really shouldn't be in. He (and Wilson) got it done. Volleyball has been brought to life when no one expected. Track n Field is kicking fanny after TAMU stole our top coach. UTEP has beach volleyball. Softball could be better.

What do you want given the low budget? I'll give you Golding. He needs to improve now or go!

You ramble more than me, but I agree

What is want is for people to stop with the lame excuses and stop with needing half a decade to win to here.

Is 6 bowls in 25 years, um good?

It’s not UTEP’s fault Terry left? You’re typing like that was like Gillispie leaving? Everyone was so pumped he left.

Floyd did not win here, what the f are you talking about? He didn’t even win a CUSA title or come close to one.

We don’t have a low budget. UTEP continues to light money on fire with the basketball program. Terry and Bronzeing were hired away from other schools and pays them better. They can accomplish the same mediocrity by hiring an assistant for less money and invest it into the football program.

I am tired of losing. It sucks. I hate seeing similar schools accomplish more in less time, aren’t you?

UTEP definition of “eating” is beating 7 of the worst teams in college football, losing all games to anyone good, just to lose in the New Mexico Bowl. That’s as good as it gets here!
By eating I meant we got to buy out a contract year for an extension Dimel should have never received.

Based on history, Walden is already on pace to be a failure. There’s not one coach that did well after winning 2 games his first year. Maybe he gets to 3 games with a NMSU win.
I tend to agree. I’ll critique every loss until he delivers results, but at this point, we have no choice but to wait and hope he figures it out. The NMSU game will be a key indicator of what to expect moving forward.

People say our schedule is tough, but let’s be honest, C-USA did us a favor by removing the return game against one of the best teams in the conference, JSU, and giving us a home game against one of the worst teams in the country instead. We shouldn’t expect any more favors like that next season. If we’re not at .500 by the start of conference play next year, just give up hope.

If UTEP gets “lucky”, they might get both Missouri St and Delaware next year. Hopefully a game vs Kennesaw St too.

Why invent something that already exists? 🤡

Because it’s so easy right? Just do it better. Make a better car. Perfect solution.

My point being, is the way to fix a program is to fire a coach and hire the guy that’s going to win. Just find a guy to do it better. Perfect solution.

In other words, it’s asinine to think you do one thing and magically everything is better. If you talk to a 5 year old with dreams, they will tell you want to make a billion dollars. Then do what Elon Musk does. It’s so simple.

But reality is much different.

A simple mind will say, someone else did it, let’s do that. Someone else became a billionaire, I can do that. Someone else won 10 games, let’s do that.

Write better contracts and stop giving coaches such a long leash. Dimel was 8-33 against FBS teams when he received an extension. Seriously, what more evidence do we need to see that it’s not going to work? We got to eat one of those extension years so it’s all fine and dandy.

Dimel took over the worst program in college football with the worst roster in college football coming off a historically awful season.

Then Covid hit and no one would come to El Paso. The next year he wins 7 games. It’s standard practice in College Football to extend a Coach going into his last season.

That’s the problem when you are just a Box Score Boy and don’t fully comprehend situations.

Look at Tom Herman’s record, he’s so great!!! Then you dive into and he’s never improved a program and been fired twice.

Dimel’s 7 2021 wins:
(A) NMSU 2-10
(H) Bethune-Cookman (2-9 FCS)
(H) UNM 3-9
(H) ODU 6-7
(A) USM 3-9
(H) LaTech 3-9
(H) Rice 4-8

And lost 5 of last 6 to end this season. Extension worthy. Is that comprehending the situation?

Maybe at UTEP, it’s standard practice to extend coaches with an 8-33 record. Houston, on the other hand, bought him out when he was 8-26. He failed after getting the extension, but Houston wasn’t foolish enough to stick around and find out the hard way like we did.

After that season you either fire him or extend him. Those are the only 2 choices they had. I guess Senter felt like it would be bad to fire the coach after the best season they had in a decade

That makes sense. I do remember fan expectations were really high after that "almost" win in the NM Bowl...like they were just about to turn a corner. But...

Why not let him play out his final season and prove that it wasn’t a fluke? If he delivers another bowl season, then he earns an extension. If it’s a losing season, everyone parts ways cleanly.

How did that workout for everyone?

If Dimel won a bowl game, then you would be a-wall. You're an armchair quarterback. If something goes wrong, then you bitch. If something goes right, then nobody hears from you.

Therefore, you never lose. Your life must be a miserable, lonely place.

Ideally that’s what you could do but for whatever reason it’s not done in the profession.

Same with Golding this season. He’s either going to get an extension or he will be gone. Agents and AD’s don’t allow coaches to be on a lame duck year.

I have no problem with getting rid of a coach if they haven’t produced in year 3.
Hiring young coaches is a crap shoot. We all kept saying that’s what UTEP should do. They did and now we bitch after one year.
Golding has to get to the dance, and not just get hot in the tournament. If not he needs to go.
If Walden isn’t winning 8 or 9 games in year three: adios. He’s done a good job recruiting, let’s see where in leads.
Kane: none of wants these 7 or 8 year coaches who do not produce, but we don’t have the money to change every two years.
I bet our Volleyball coach is gone after this year. He’s improved the program every year and bigger colleges will notice. Just hope the next coach can keep the program intact.

Come on man, we’re not here to talk about volleyball. Wallis will probably be gone soon and every UTEP fan should be happy for him. UTEP is a stepping stone school. Moving on to something bigger and better is something Senter can sell to the next volleyball coach.

That’s when UTEP was the best, when they could sell moving on to a bigger program in the mid 2000s. Gillispie, Sadler, and Barbee all got paid at bigger programs.

I hope Walden wins 9 games next year, so he can move on too and Senter is able to sell the program to the next guy.

Stull took out a second mortgage on Price. Senter, literally believing Dimel's years long diatribe of "we're (still) young...the bodies piled up this year...Gosh! That ref or those calls turned the game around...We were two plays (from a different outcome)....we're building a foundation...we need to go after the right players on defense (next year in the juco ranks)..." took a gamble with fans patience, he lost big.

My point is that the incentives did not have time stamps on them for Lee, Bailey, Nord, Price, nor Dimel. Kugler imposed his own time stamp and love or hate him, he honored it. He went to a bowl, but things got worse the next year instead of better. It was just itemized contractual "meet these and you get $xx,xxx for conference championship or $x,xxx if you beat NMSU". "UTEP will give you more time" is what they got known as.

You’re probably right. The university has never managed to leverage momentum to elevate the program to the next level. I’m not sure if that mindset will ever change.
To be at UTEP games 2004-2007 under Price was a special experience. He would come out with the pick axe to a large enthused crowd and we had a host of future NFLers that made the Sun Bowl fun
