OPT: UTEP at UCSB

Offensive rebounding is tactical, defensive rebounding is a fundamental and just as important as shooting.

Our opponents have obviously noticed UTEP is not the best of rebounding teams they will play against, so instead of quickly getting back on defense they are sending at least two attacking the boards. It's worth the risk because UTEP is not potent (lack of a better term) in getting the "one and done rebound" and attack the other end. Our opponents see the "50/50 ball" (Golding's favorite term to use) on the boards.

Now a coin has two sides and to him, the "50/50" is cutting off backcourt lanes and go for the steal. Golding is great at that; however, older UTEP fans lived the Haskins experience, "Get the damn rebound!!". There is the offensive rebound is tactical; it's all position (coaches design to go after or fall back). Defensive rebounding is a must. How do you have a chance to score?

One UTPB big man, who could not "play above the rim", embarrassed Golding. I was ready to go jump on the Kane bandwagon and demand Golding's ouster, but it's a money and early OOC game.
So you're saying the Golding plan might be, if they get the rebound, steal it? But that means not getting back. Risky.

Kane: none of wants these 7 or 8 year coaches who do not produce, but we don’t have the money to change every two years.
Stull took out a second mortgage on Price. Senter, literally believing Dimel's years long diatribe of "we're (still) young...the bodies piled up this year...Gosh! That ref or those calls turned the game around...We were two plays (from a different outcome)....we're building a foundation...we need to go after the right players on defense (next year in the juco ranks)..." took a gamble with fans patience, he lost big.

My point is that the incentives did not have time stamps on them for Lee, Bailey, Nord, Price, nor Dimel. Kugler imposed his own time stamp and love or hate him, he honored it. He went to a bowl, but things got worse the next year instead of better. It was just itemized contractual "meet these and you get $xx,xxx for conference championship or $x,xxx if you beat NMSU". "UTEP will give you more time" is what they got known as.

Offensive rebounding is all desire. Defensive rebounding is all fundamentals. The ball goes up, put a body on the man you're guarding, and he has no chance to get the board. Unfortunately, not only can't we shoot, we are not fundamentally sound, either.

I have no problem with getting rid of a coach if they haven’t produced in year 3.
Hiring young coaches is a crap shoot. We all kept saying that’s what UTEP should do. They did and now we bitch after one year.
Golding has to get to the dance, and not just get hot in the tournament. If not he needs to go.
If Walden isn’t winning 8 or 9 games in year three: adios. He’s done a good job recruiting, let’s see where in leads.

I bet our Volleyball coach is gone after this year. He’s improved the program every year and bigger colleges will notice. Just hope the next coach can keep the program intact.
Come on man, we’re not here to talk about volleyball. Wallis will probably be gone soon and every UTEP fan should be happy for him. UTEP is a stepping stone school. Moving on to something bigger and better is something Senter can sell to the next volleyball coach.

That’s when UTEP was the best, when they could sell moving on to a bigger program in the mid 2000s. Gillispie, Sadler, and Barbee all got paid at bigger programs.

I hope Walden wins 9 games next year, so he can move on too and Senter is able to sell the program to the next guy.

OPT: Tennessee vs Utep

Tennessee never calls off the Dawgs. They will run up a Score.

The advantage UTEP has is that both teams run the same offense. The UTEP Defense does know the Tennessee offense. Austin Peay held them to 30 points last season.

Tennessee will obviously out-talent the Miners but the familiarity with each others offensive systems will keep the scoring low for about 2 and a half quarters.. I don't see the Miners getting in the End Zone and Tennessee will get a couple late touchdowns and win 52-6. However, Miners will hang around until mid 3rd Quarter. Then the lack of offense will ultimately open the flood gates.

Why not let him play out his final season and prove that it wasn’t a fluke? If he delivers another bowl season, then he earns an extension. If it’s a losing season, everyone parts ways cleanly.

Ideally that’s what you could do but for whatever reason it’s not done in the profession.

Same with Golding this season. He’s either going to get an extension or he will be gone. Agents and AD’s don’t allow coaches to be on a lame duck year.

After that season you either fire him or extend him. Those are the only 2 choices they had. I guess Senter felt like it would be bad to fire the coach after the best season they had in a decade
That makes sense. I do remember fan expectations were really high after that "almost" win in the NM Bowl...like they were just about to turn a corner. But...

Dimel’s 7 2021 wins:
(A) NMSU 2-10
(H) Bethune-Cookman (2-9 FCS)
(H) UNM 3-9
(H) ODU 6-7
(A) USM 3-9
(H) LaTech 3-9
(H) Rice 4-8

And lost 5 of last 6 to end this season. Extension worthy. Is that comprehending the situation?
