I think im the only one but I think he is doing good job. People forget that he is playing a harder OCC schedule than coaches before. Since he has been here Utep really only had 1 bad season, The real problem is utep is playing in a 1 bid league.

I agree with you!! but apparently i am not objective enough so sorry i guess i do not count!

I think he is doing a good job. Not as good as I hoped but good nonetheless. It doesn't have to be a "good job" versus "fire him" scenario.

i think utep is cursed!! they just cant ever get over the hump and win big games in basketball or in football! do not know what the deal is.....

TIm Floyd has had three 20 win seasons in his 5 years. Barbee only had one and then bolted and that's with Tim Floyd playing a tougher schedule.

Coach Floyd is a heck of a good coach and his record, historically as well as here at UTEP, indicates that fact. Like most everyone else, I'm disappointed in some of the bad losses this year's team had. They had the size and talent to do much better, but they lost to teams that they absolutely should not have lost to. However, that doesn't really taint Floyd's coaching ability - too many factors can impact a team that the coach really can't control. This team just seemed to go walk-about at key times in games. They didn't have a true "go to" player who could take over a game.

Wrong. Tony had 2 20 win seasons.

14 in year 1
19 in year 2
23 in year 3
26 in year 4

Also won a regular season championship with Memphis in the league and went to the NCAAs. Even won in the CBI. Floyd hasn't been able to do any of that.

Floyd has done a good job here at UTEP. The loss of Hamilton had a bigger impact on this program then anyone could have predicted. If he would have decommitted sooner then waiting til school was about to start, Floyd could have gone to plan B. Instead plan B and C were already signed with other schools. Hamilton is the sole reason why UTEP is hurting at the guard position. No guard was willing to sign knowing that Hamilton was going to get all the playing time. Once he changed his mind UTEP was put in a bad spot. Floyd will get us to places where we could only imagine before. This guy is right choice for UTEP, he bleeds orange and blue like the rest of us.

GO MINERS!

So far IMO he hasn't met expectations of most fans who were geeked up (like me) when he came to town . Five years in, he gets a C maybe a C plus.

No. I think he's doing a mediocre job. This is not to ruffle feathers, as it is my honest opinion. I think this is as good as it will get with Floyd at the helm. I honestly hope I'm wrong.

I hope you're wrong too , because CTF isn't getting fired .

I'm disappointed that we haven't had the success most fans were expecting, but I still believe he will get us there. I still support him 100%.

My biggest criticism is the revolving door of recruits. We never know what our team will look like next season. Growing up in the 80's and watching guys play for 4 years and these athletes being the heroes of a kid year after year was what made me love the Miners.

It is hard to relate to a team when there is so much turnover in the program. I think there is a disconnect between the community and the program because of all the attrition.

Like I said in a previous post, I am not in favor of firing Floyd, yet, but if you think that he's been doing a good job so far, you definitely have different expectations of the basketball program than I do. Here's what I see after five years of Floyd at the helm:

No NCAA Tournament appearances. With the exception of his first year, when he was playing with Barbee's recruits, his teams haven't been anywhere near the Tournament bubble heading into the CUSA Tournament (and, in fact, we weren't that close to the bubble that year).

No CUSA regular season titles.

With the exception of that first year with Barbee's players, we haven't performed well in the CUSA Tournament.

In three post season appearances (two NIT and one CBI) his teams have played poorly, losing by double figures in each.

An incredibly large number of players that Floyd has signed to scholarships have either never made it in uniform or have been removed from the team early.

Like I said in the previous post, his success in his previous jobs gives me hope that he will eventually become successful here. But his tenure so far has fallen well short of my expectations.

One last thing: I challenge everyone who believes that Floyd has done a good job to think of how you honestly would feel if an unknown coach had come in and performed the way Floyd has in his five years. Most people on here, myself included, were happy when we replaced Barbee with Floyd, yet Barbee accomplished more in his four years here than Floyd has in his five years. If Barbee had been here for five years, failed to make an NCAA Tournament, and been soundly defeated in every post season appearance, would you still say that he was doing a good job?

No they wouldn't. That is why there's a double standard. I remember when people wanted Barbee gone after his 3rd year because he went to the CBI again. Now, it seems like Floyd can accomplish nothing and everyone is cool with it.

George Mason got rid of their coach after 4 years, and even though Floyd does not have the losses that Paul Hewitt, the fact remains the same, they both didn't get the job done.

If Vince Hunter leaves, guess what, its just going to be another excuse for Floyd and blue hairs that blindly support him. "Oh well, he didn't have Vince this year, let's give him another year" Its a never ending cycle with Floyd. Keeping him as coach is setting the basketball program back. Look at how big the NCAA gets every year. UTEP is missing out, while teams like Georgia St and UAB are getting national attention for their upsets. UTEP hasn't upset anybody in 23 years!

Curious why nobody brings up the point of how good he did last year after losing McKenzie and two other players, along with top recruit Hamilton. In my opinion the only reason why we're discussing Floyd is, cause of the loss of those two players. Had that not happen last year we're probably in NCAA two years in a row. There's layers and reasons for the mediocrity and now that the seasons over and I've calmed down from my disappointment I see things for what they truly are and why they've transpired how they have and it's not all Floyd's fault. With that said, this year I still say he should've did better and not had those two Bad losses and won a couple of more close games so over all grade is a C+

CTF did an admirable job of going on that 8-0 run right after losing the trio of players. However, with that said, the only player worth a damn that we lost was Moore. Crosgile was very inconsistent during his short stay, and would completely disappear for games at a time. Forget about Rags, as he had no business playing D1 ball. The difficulty in losing those 3 guys was that we had no depth to replace them, and we did lose our floor general, which was the bigger issue. Floyd adjusted pretty well, all things considered, in large part due to our interior size and good defense. Once teams realized they could pack the paint because our guards couldn't consistently shoot from the perimeter, the gig was up, though. That is where I feel like one of CTF's short comings is, his inability to adjust offensively speaking. I've witnessed it year after year, not just this season. The other being that I tend to believe there is some kind of a disconnect between he and and his players. Chemistry seems nonexistent for long stretches of time. The team as a whole just appears stifled, and very un-creative on the offensive end. He doesn't seem to get all that he can from his guys...like they aren't "all in". Your grade of C+ is exactly about where I have him graded over his 5 year tenure. Mediocre is the word I've been using. I thought we'd be getting an A level coach, but I'd have settled for B+. If CTF hadn't have adjusted as well as he did for part of last season, I'd have him at a solid C. He gets some extra credit for the job he did last year, but that was just a part of he curriculum.

I think floyd didnt get near enough heat for last year. He brought Moore and crosgile into the program even though both had serious red flags and checkered pasts. It was Floyd's choice to overlook those guys character and in the end he payed the price. Im not going to give him credit for surviving something that was of his own making. This is the story of floyd's tenure either his recruits dont make it on campus or they have serious character issues become a cancer and are kicked off the team.
