C-USA baseball ranked 3rd nationally

To half the schools in cusa baseball is more important than basketball. UTEP baseball will return the question is when. Im thinking in about five years. They are actively looking at womens sports to add.

IMO with the chihuahuas already in town why not add a soccer team instead. We reduced the seating capacity of the sun bowl to make it soccer size. El Paso is a hotbed of soccer talent. Eastlake is in the final four trying to bring another star title back to the sun city. Baseball is cool but can we support a triple a team and a college team. There will certainly be a lot of times that both teams play in the same day at the same time. Who would we support our city team or our university team?

Baseball is an ascending ncaa sport. Every year it becomes more visible and more important to conferences and athletic departments. College soccer is an invisible sport. It runs concurrently with football season. It gets zero publicity. I wish we could add several sports, but in our posistion we have to add sports that add value to the department. At this time baseball is the only sport that does that. Its going to continue to gain prominence and be a bigger deal in conference affiliation.

I think El Paso has more local talent in baseball than soccer. Every year kids from El Paso go off to play d1 baseball. I dont remember very many kids signing with d1 schools in soccer.

The UTEP and Chihuahua baseball schedules would not overlap much and would really be a non-issue. The college baseball regular season ends in mid-May. That's when the conference tournaments begin; then the regionals, super regionals, and World Series follows, concluding the college season in mid-June. UTEP would very unlikely have any remaining home games after mid-May. The Chihuahua's season is still in it's infancy at that point, with a full summer slate still left to be played. Even the small portions of schedules that do overlap, many times UTEP will be on the road, while the Chi's are in town, or vice versa. I really think the "competing" schedules would not play much of a factor in attendance numbers. A lack of overall community interest could be a factor. Regardless, I'd like to see UTEP Miners Baseball return.

I'm not hard to please I'll take either one. What are the chances we add both?

Not likely but not impossible. Neither soccer or baseball are full ride sports. Ncaa d1 soccer get 9.7 scholarships. Baseball gets 11. In both cases usually three players share a scholarship so only 33% of their tuition is covered. They dont get coa. Womens and mens soccer are equal at the ncaa level. So a mens coach would make whatever coach cross is making. A baseball coach would make around 200 k.

Baseball will be first. After that it would either be soccer or the darkhorse hockey. The UTEP hockey club team has built quite an infrastructure, and got alot of fans. Plus the El Paso hockey association could fully fund the cost of hockey scholarships.

When Stull retires. He has publicly stated that baseball will not return under his tenure.

The groundwork is being laid for the return of baseball. They are actively deciding which womens sports to add to become title 9 compliant. I think in 2017 they will announce the addition of new womens sports. That will pave the way for baseball to return, probably in 2021 or 2022.
