Dinner at the Don

Why do they do this? It looks so weird and players look uncomfortable.
It looks like the movie "Get Out"
I have been to just one such dinner and that was back in the Bailey/Nord era. It was a starting linebacker but I forgot his name. Three things stood out that I will never forget: He said he was nervous. Players don't turn these events down because "we typically don't eat this good and it's free". Third, He hated scrimmaging the first team offense because Paul Smith was the most punishing running back he has ever played against; "You get up hurting when you have to tackle him".

But yes, they are uncomfortable. Remember meeting the father for the first time of that girl you've been eyeing? That's how they feel.

BTW, I met Paul Smith in a professional setting a year or so after he was drafted. His bicep was literally bigger than my head. They were massive.

Nervous and uncomfortable about what? It's a dinner.

Yeah but at 18 or 19 years old?? And you have complete strangers looking at you eating and asking you questions.

Why would questions from fans make you nervous and uncomfortable? These are adults, not 8 year old kids.

Yes Fili, wouldn't you want some incessant bitch asking you how much you spent on tickets to a game and then bashing you for spending your money telling you that you spent too much? Pinche comadre India Maria in this mother ****er.

You seem mad. :D

Probably not. What's your point?
That's my point. I bet you the players dont want to do it. Why is it only the mens team?? Why only basketball? Why do the players have to be separated ?? Why cant the players sit together?

Why only men's basketball? Gee... maybe because it is literally put on by the men's basketball program to celebrate the season tipping off

I spit my drink....nice comeback!

Why can't the players sit together? Seriously? Then why even have it? The idea is for some fans to get to know the players, not the players sit in the corner talking crap about the rest of the people. (They can do that after they leave....lol) Too bad they price it too high for average folks. Also, they could do something targeting youth basketball teams....Let the players play with high school kids for a bit....that kinda thing..

It's jarring to see the photos. This event used to get 1000 people. Looks like maybe 100 people attended. Like everything else UTEP related enthusiasm is way down, which is understandable. I think last year we were just above 4500 average attendance for basketball. I've always thought after the older season ticket base died or were unable to attend games attendance would fall off a cliff and the bottom would be around 3,500 per game.

Winning cures all. That's what the program needs to do. Look at the sell out we just had in football against UNT. El paso thought they were getting a winner and showed up. Turns out, it's what we all feared.

Also hard to build enthusiasm when You lose your entire team to the transfer portal.

Contact the Women's basketball office and let them know you'd like to finance this endeavor. I'm sure it'll draw thousands.
How did it cost Utep anything?? They had dinner at the Don Haskins Center. They couldn't invite the womens team also? Dont tell me they had to pay Doc Sadler??
