Does Incarnate Word even count towards bowl eligibility?

Yes, I'm aware that FCS schools can count towards bowl eligibility, but Incarnate Word is still in transition to the FCS level. They are not even eligible for the FCS playoffs this year and won't be until 2017. If they are not even eligible for the FCS playoffs, again I ask:
Do they count as a win towards bowl eligibility?

(As a side note: Not all FCS teams count towards bowl eligibility under normal circumstances. FCS schools that don't offer athletic scholarships, like the Ivies or the Patriot League, do not count.)

2014: "Eligibility Denied: Old Dominion (6-6) - Because it is the school's first year in the FBS, the Monarchs fall behind all eligible teams in the bowl pecking order. They were ruled ineligible for the 2014 bowl season."

Incarnate Word is still in a transition phase. They can't participate in the playoffs at their own level until 2017. Yes, the NCAA can always grant waivers if there aren't enough bowl eligible teams, but in the absence of such a waiver, does IW count? (Are they considered a "full" FCS team this season? Certainly not with regards to the playoffs.)

As long has an fcs school is giving out 90 percent (56.5) of the fcs scolarship limit (63), they do count toward bowl eligibility. Im sure Incarnate Word meets those requirements. They couldnt be in the Southland conference if they werent fully funding 63 scholarships.

Short answer... Yes, but Utep needs to win 7 for it to count. 6-6 with this win will not cut it

6-6 will get you in a bowl game this year. Last year c-usa had five bowl slots, this year we have seven.

So assuming we win this weekend, where do the other four wins come from? I think Rice = home loss, but that's why they play the games.

The next four are winnable. If we can improve the defense a little we could easily win the next four. UTSA, FAU and FIU arent very good. USM much like us has a terrible defense. ODU is a very winnable. By the time we get to UNT they will be full on dumpster fire. Rice and La Tech are at home so maybe we have a chance more so with Rice than La Tech.

Well as long as you guys are sure. I would hate to find out at the end of the year that 6-6 doesn't cut it because Incarnate Word hasn't fully transitioned to FCS.

Have you watched any of those teams play on TV? They have been on TV in El Paso.

Rice and Tech? UTEP is not even on the same level this year compared to those two. Those games will get ugly and you and Kugler will be eating your term "Dumpster fire" is concerned. Metz has the potential to be an all CUSA player down the road, but when he face's La Tech and Rice front D line, it is going to be baptism by fire. Tech's receivers are awesome this year.

UTSA, they're too up and down, like UTEP.....so, eh. Who ever wants it more.

FAU and FIU? These two teams have made major improvements and are nothing like the same teams of the last two years. FAU was toe to toe with Miami, but three straight fumbles doesn't get it done. But then again, those two schools have a history of disrespect towards each other, but I wouldn't call it a rivalry either.

Southern Miss.?. They don't have a great defense, but it's not near as bad as UTEP's and they move the ball much, much better this year. They have this game circled after that thumping Kugler gave them last year.

UNT? See UTSA comments.

Pope is on TV. Go do some praying for UTEP. After Saturday, they will need it.

I prefaced my comment by if the defense gets better. If the defense doesnt get better we wont win more than two more games.

UTSA is not very good and we play them at home.

FAU is at home and they arent that good and have to come halfway across the country.

FIU is improved but one win was against UCF who just lost to Furman and is on their way to an 0-12 season. Will be a tough game because its an 11 am kick on the road.

USM is improved and its on the road but we will move the ball on them. Its winnable.

Rice is good I like bailiff. The game is at home which is usually worth 10-14 points. We will be underdogs as i stated we have a CHANCE because its a home.

La Tech is good. Im not as impressed with their game with k state game as most. Kstate is down to a walk on qb and will probably only win 1 game in the big 12. I dont like our matchups vs Tech they are the toughest game.

I prefaced my comments by saying winnable if the defense improves. The defensive line has been especially bad, the worst in the country. We have to get better line play. However the added dimension of a vertical passing game makes our offense much more potent. Our talent at the skill posistions is better than almost anyone in c-usa

With the NMSU win "high" coming to an end, we still have a lot of question marks for the rest of the season. Yes Metz had a hell of a game, but NMSU's defense is worse than ours. Metz caught NMSU by surprise because they weren't expecting a pass attack and they didn't prepare for Metz. They had no clue about him. It was a hell of a game from Metz, but teams will focus on him now. This was just one game against a terrible defense and one of the worst teams in college football. We need to see him in more games before we label him as the savior. 2nd- Our defense was probably the main reason for our 7-6 finish last season. They had some big games and probably won 2 games for us last year from turnovers and stops. The defense has done a complete 180 this year and looks like the defense in Stokers first season here.
3rd-Last year we were disciplined and we very good with keeping our penalties very low. This year we have a lot of penalties.

With the way our defense is playing, I don't see us winning more than 4 games this year. We don't have the type of offense that can be getting into offensive shootouts on a weekly basis, which seems to be the case with how our our defense is playing.

I think you are underestimating UTSA. Their defense is much better than ours. They played tough vs Arizona on the road. We can win but it will be tough. If our defense gets better and Metz continues to play well, giving us a good pass offense, the Miners could surprise some people, but I don't see any easy wins except for IW.

I'm looking at the UTSA game much like many here were looking at the Texas Tech game: a barometer game for the rest of the season. UTSA has had tough schedule, Arizona on the road (10 point loss), K-State at home (by about 30, very sloppy game) and destroyed by Oklahoma State on the road, 69-14 (we know how that feels). They've got a 1-2 Colorado State team at home this week before coming here, then they've got La. Tech. I've watched all or most of their games, and really, the only impressive game was against Arizona. They were sloppy and undisciplined against an equally sloppy K-State team. Ok State just outclassed them, much like Arkansas and Tech did to us. I'm really interested in seeing how they respond this week against Colorado State. After the Arizona game, I was impressed by how much they had improved since last year. They did not follow that up against K-State and they flat out quit against Ok State. Their redshirt QB who looked impressive the first game has regressed and I believed was pulled from the game last week. It will be interesting at the Sun Bowl a week from this Saturday, but no way would I say its a sure win.

I have no predictions on this team at this point. They have to get better defensively to even think about a bowl, so I'm in Let's just see what happens mode!

Looking at out CUSA opponents today:

Baylor 63, Rice 17 at the start of the 4th. The fact that Rice is losing isn't surprising. I think the score is.

App. St. 49, ODU 0. Monarchs losing by 50 at home to start the 4th.

Iowa 42, UNT 16 at the start of the 4th. No huge surprise there.

Nebraska 36, Southern MIss 28. Not quite sure what to make of this one. Looks like Southern Miss was down pretty good but came back to make it interesting.

La Tech 27, FIU 17.

FAU at Charlotte and CSU at UTSA later tonight.

I know it's only one week, but not really all that impressive. So, I don't think bowling is as laughable as it seemed. Basically, I think we need to 3-1 against UNT, UTSA, and the FUs. But, as natty said, if our defense doesn't get better, it's probably academic right now.

The way the miners are playing this first half, Incarnate Word is wondering if a potential win against ours miners would count towards their bowl eligibility. No way we have a winning record or go bowling this year. I cant believe the complete regression we have seen in all phases of the game. Kugler needs to keep his hands off of the offense. It's pathetic!!!!

Oh no...this Miners team will have difficulty winning any C-USA games. This looks like a 2-10 team...if they beat UIW.
