Football commits

UTEP 0
UTSA 17 (including 10 3***)
Their coach actually knows how to recruit legit college athletes, Kugler....not so much. Kugler's recruiting plan was recruit hard as hell from December to singing day, Frank Wilson breathes and recruits at the same time.

Lord or a higher power please help our next coach, we're gonna be in a deep talent deficiency hole unless the new coach has an effective air raid system to hide the lack of play makers on the offensive side of the ball.

Let's just drop all sports but basketball, have only a men's and women's team with the entire budget dedicated to just that so we can compete with national powers.

And keep track and field. Then what do we do with the Sun Bowl?

Go indy in Football and join the west coast conference with BYU and the Zags. In Football schedule would be

NMSU
BYU
Notre Dame
Umass
Army
Arizona Schools
A California School
And some Texas schools.

That football schedule looks a lot better than the C- USA one.

Wouldnt utep make more money goung indy in Football ?

Turn it into a soccer specific stadium for those national team games we will never host and that MLS team we will never have

That's the schedule we would want but this is the schedule we would receive

NMSU X2
BYU
Liberty X2
UMass
Army
Northern Arizona
Cal Poly
Houston Baptist
Texas St
Some other P5

I would do it still only if utep got into the WCC.

By eliminating the football team you just crushed the music program. There is no more marching band and therefore fewer students enrolled so funding is cut. Also you've put numerous employees out of work. This also kills the dance team. "So what?"... fewer programs for students equals lower enrollment and therefore less tuition paid. You've also cut jobs for event crew. That means many unused facilities that fall into disrepair. Entire coaching staffs are laid off and so is marketing. No more Minerpalooza or homecoming. Alumni dollars will decrease. Our D2 basketball team won't draw. People already complain about playing Cardinal Stritch and Tarleton State. Now we get to play them exclusively! In order to be D1 we need at least 6 men's programs and 8 women's programs or 7 each. Then there's the lost advertising dollars. Those Charlie Clarke Nissan ads probably bring in thousands. Yes, universities are for learning. .. but when will 12,000 people buy t-shirts, hats, concessions and tickets to watch a chemistry experiment?

To those who want to go independent. Please do research. There is a reason why conferences exist and have expanded and transitioned since great grampy got back from Europe. They work.

Psssssst. Come closer.....closer.....{that's good} It's socialism in it's classic form. Yeah! Socialism! They share their revenue. Shhhhhhhhhhh! Don't piss off the righties. That bowl money? Shared. NCAA TV revenue? Shared.

One of the silliest things you have posted, and that's saying a lot.

Basketball is the problem at UTEP. We have an over inflated tradition. We've done nothing since 66. Tradition has to be built on we've gone to three tourneys in 25 years whatever tradition we had is long gone. Utah's infatuation with an unimportant sport at the expense of football is whats wrong with the school. We play in a one bid league where the season doesnt start till March. We are farther down the food chain in basketball than we are in football. Yet we have convinced ourselves we're Duke. Itd thos delusional bullshit that has cripled the athletic department.

In his defense if we managed to make a football schedule alliance with the MW and the G5 Texas teams, independence could work. We schedule four road money games and we’ve already made more money than the entire CUSA/Sun Belt, MW/AAC tv contracts pay out per team combined. Between losing to Middle Tennessee or the real Tennessee I pick Tennessee. Between losing to Florida International or the real Florida I pick Florida.

Of course we don’t have the leadership to make such a bold risky move. It seems everyone is comfortable where we are at.

That would be a very stupid move. So basically we have to go 6-2 in the other games to make a bowl game every year? Who do you think is going to play UTEP at home? I promise you the schedule won't be any more attractive than it is now.

You are forgetting that UTEP will have to pay some of the teams that will be playing in the Sun Bowl. We would not make more money like you think we will.

I would rather have a chance to beat teams than have 4 bodybag games.

I understand but we suck at football and I don’t ever see the light out. Given the option between sucking in the worst football conference or turning into a money making body bag I pick the latter.

It’s all fantasy talk. Hopefully UTEP surprises us with the two crucial hires coming up.

So you want UTEP to suck even more? Who is going to see 0-6 UTEP against Texas State and Liberty University?

I say stay in CUSA, hire a young assistant coach, win some games, win a bowl game, and maybe even a conference championship and then maybe we can get into another conference. What you are saying is just crazy talk!

I guess the same people that will go see 0-7 UTEP play UTSA.

That sounds great but we haven’t done any of that the past half century. Crazy is usually what people call you until it works then all of a sudden you’re a genius.

Like I said and you said I know it won’t happen. We will remain in CUSA and when the next wave hits we will be in CUSA 4.0 with Texas St, Troy and whoever else the hell is in the Sun Belt right now.

But this is the first time UTEP has been 0-7 for a long time. UTEP would most likely start off 0-4 every year with 4 bodybag games.

UTEP were co-champs in 2000.

I really think, with the right coach, great things can be done here. Remember in 2000, 2004, and 2005 when the Sun Bowl was packed with sold out games? It can definitely happen again. I am not sure why you want to give up.

Yes it would be nice to get there again.

To answer your last statement I’m a bit worn out. It seems a lot of negative thinking dominates the El Paso scene. Every idea to add some improvement is shut down with the same old naysayer mentality. From the arena, to the USL team, to the basketball departures, to our options of AD.

Throws us a damn life line UTEP you’re managing to discourage even the most die hard fans.

Because the way the program is being run right now is working so well, right?

I don’t believe anyone is serious about going independent or dropping football. That’s just plain stupid.

I'm serious about independence. NMSU is doing everything UTEP should be doing.

Edit: Their program has more NCAA Tournament appearances than UTEP now because they've been winning WAC Tournaments in recent years.

NMSU is doing that because they were kicked out of the Sun Belt. They HAVE to do it.

Have you looked at NMSU's Independent home schedule? It's not a very attractive schedule.

I said I think it can be done again (being co-champs like in 2000, being ranked, beating ranked teams) with a young assistant coach.

Obviously the way the program is run is not good right now, so there needs to be change.

That doesn't mean UTEP couldn't schedule Notre Dame, BYU, Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, or any team that El Paso shows up to watch every year in the Sun Bowl game.

Football independence would put basketball in a smaller conference and give it a better chance of making the tournament every year because Conference USA requires football. C-USA is a one-bid league anyway, so why not go to the weakest one-bid league possible or join NMSU in the WAC?

What's your point? UTEP could do that while still being in CUSA.

The only team that would guarantee a sellout is Texas or Notre Dame.

UTEP has a hard time beating the worst teams in CUSA. What makes you think they will do in better in a smaller conference?

To win the WAC UTEP would have to get by NMSU, Grand Canyon, and CSU Bakersfield and UTEP is not better than those teams.

It frees up half the schedule to take trips to money games with more national exposure. More money and more exposure will help the program develop. I'll take a blowout loss to Florida on national TV while getting paid over a blowout loss to FIU, which happened in '15.

True, but other power programs would guarantee at least 40,000.

Being blown out on national television is good exposure that will help UTEP develop????:confused::confused:

Oklahoma in 2012 barely got 40,000.

I don't know about other people on here, but I would rather play games that UTEP has a chance to win vs. playing games UTEP has no chance to win and being embarrassed on national television.

That's why I said at least 40,000.

And UTEP made that game versus Oklahoma competitive despite going 3-9 that year.

You do realize at 0-7 Utep draws more fans than most G5 programs and makes more money and is still around the top of CUSA? Kill that noise about killing the football program. This year is tough yes and Kugler recruited us into the ground with the exception of the Jones Kids, but it's been awhile since we had this bad of a season, it's not like it happens every year.
