Was wondering if anyone has heard any possibilities? Maybe someone has heard chatter? I would think March is a huge month as if we are bringing in an asst from another university we may be awaiting a teams season to end.

I hope we go a young hungry assistant route. Maybe some would prefer a bigger name with ties to the city....

Lets bring someone in that has been surrounded by winners. The basketball vacancy to me should of been a bigger draw then the football. Alot easier to put a team of 7-8 players then 22. We at least at one point had winning tradition with basketball.

I just heard Brandon Wolfram just put in his application and he is tagging Marlon Maxey as an assistant coach.

GO Miners...

I heard from a good source that James Naismith wants to come and teach the basics. Been frozen for a few years waiting for the right team.

For what it is worth....
Wolfram played some Euro ball for few years, has or had a professional sports training program in EP, works or worked in credit advisory industry and USA youth development trainer. He was on the local news recently but I can't find the source.

One glaring item: Zero college coaching experience.

According to this website from '12, Maxey disappeared off the map in '01. Prior to his departure, he had two years in the NBA (1st pick in Round 2) and a few years in various international teams.

It cracks me up that people can not look beyond “UTEP guys” when it comes to potential head coaching candidates. Barbee, GIllispie, Hardaway, Foster, Keitha Adams.... come on people! Let’s think a little bigger. We all bitched and moaned when we thought Stull was going to “Keep it in the family” and essentially gift the AD job to Chris Park and now we want to go back to the way it was. There will be tons of coaches applying for the job, and all we should want is the best candidate available.

C’mon UTEPMiners8106, let’s bring Barbee back. We will be perennial CBI contenders for life.

I’m not anti-anybody. If Barbee is the best candidate, so be it. If he is the most qualified candidate, if he has the best credentials, if he knocks out the interview and has the best vision for the program and the best plan to achieve said vision.... so be it damnit! That goes for anybody. This whole “let’s give (UTEP guy) a shot” mentality is hilarious because half of these guys people name have little to no experience. People want Sean Kugler 2.0. I don’t want a head coach that is going to have to learn on the job.

I’m #TeamBarbee.

Between him and an up and coming assistant without HC experience I’ll take Barbee. If it’s between him and a coach with HC experience then I would have to compare both of their careers before making a decision.

I wouldn’t mind someone like Mike Davis.

Looking at Barbee’s UK profile he is in his third year as an assistant. Prior to that he was a “Special Assistant” and assisted with “game-plan preparation, practice plans and administrative duties within everyday basketball operations.”

I would be very curious to know if he is a better/hungrier coach now as opposed to 12 years ago when he came to El Paso. It’s tough to argue with the credentials, and he has served under an All-Time coach which you think it should serve him well on the court as well as on the recruiting trail.

I say give it to Lebron James. He is 3 of 6 in Nba Finals. He has out coach Greg Pop. He is good at drawing plays and a great defensive coach. He also knows all the best High Schoolers and players would come a play for him.

Are you serious right now or have a bad memory? Barbee took them to Championship of CBI second year at large bid next year not the conference auto, which is almost impossible in CUSA and had be stayed and full team returned, would've been a top 15 team! Dude you must have memory loss or something. Not saying it's gonna be him, but we should be so lucky!

I think it’s a testament to that team the fact that they made it to the conference championship in Floyd’s first year. He handcuffed the offense and they lost their two best post players and they were still only a minute or two from returning to the NCAA Tourney. Hard to disagree with what what could have been.

I am in the camp that believes DC took us to the NCAA. On his back. Just my opinion.

What a ****ing stupid take.

Not really.

-CBI appearance with Barbee’s core team.
-CBI finals with Barbee’s core team.
-Average at best start the next season. Then something like 15-1 once DC joins the team in the spring semester.

If DC was a traditional Barbee recruit, I’d feel different. I’m not confident a DC level talent will fall into his lap again. I’m not willing to bet our program’s future that it would.

Again, just my opinion. Certainly not worth cursing over.

What difference does it make how the players get on the team? Why does DC need an asterisk because he improved the team? How good would every team be without their best player?

Will the football team get an asterisk because Winston Dimel is joining?

It is stupid to say that if a certain player wasn’t there then you wouldn’t have success. You can say that about just about every team in every team sport. Barbee got him here and won, period.

It’s almost as if you’re saying that if Barbee wasn’t such a good recruiter then he would be a loser. After the last several years I would take a good recruiter over a good coach everyday of the week
