DC was a really good player, but he was also a pretty damn good team’s best player.

Could it have anything at all to do with the fact that Barbee had coached his core group for 3 years and they actually improved year to year? DC just happened to make them that much better.

It wasn’t just cuz of DC, tho. That team with the core group as seniors was a coaching mistake away from making it 2 in a row...and without DC and AM. ****ing Floyd.

It was ALL DC? What a ****ing laugh. Perennial CBI team. Whatever. (Not directed at you specifically, EP Max, cuz I’ve heard this argument before)

Only questions I have about Barbee is whether or not he can recruit like he did 10-12 years ago. And whether he’d stick around for a decent chunk of time, like 5 plus years...if we want him that long. I don’t question his ability to coach at all.

C’mon UTEPMiners8106, let’s bring Barbee back. We will be perennial CBI contenders for life.

I am in the camp that believes DC took us to the NCAA. On his back. Just my opinion.

I am in the camp that believes the idea that "Barbee was a CBI level coach" to be ridiculous. His teams significantly improved their record every year that he was here. Of course he was on the path to bigger and better things than the CBI. As far as the idea that DC carried us to the NCAA Tournament, DC certainly was a major reason why we were able to make it there. But DC was recruited by Barbee and his staff, so he gets credit for DC's presence on the team. Also, some other players (Culpepper, Stone, Moultrie, Williams, Polk, among others) might have contributed a little bit as well. And you can't forget the defense that team played, which was fantastic.

After Auburn Barbee returned to Calipari's side, where he has helped that staff bring in the number one recruiting class year after year. If Barbee returns here I don't think that recruiting will be an issue.

Will he stay five years or more if he returns? I'm not really concerned about that. If he gets us to the NCAA Tournament again and then leaves, he will have done his job. It will be up to the AD to hire the right guy to replace him.

Now please note that I am not advocating that we hire Barbee. I do think that if he pursues the job he deserves an interview. After the interview process Senter should hire the best man available, be it Barbee or another candidate. I certainly would not be opposed to his return.

I know he has had a hand in bringing recruits to Kentucky. But it is Kentucky after all, and that is a brand that sells itself.

While here at UTEP, Barbee made a living picking up the Memphis leftovers due to his recruitment of them while with the Tigers. While Memphis was an elite program at the time, they were in our conference so the field was somewhat level, making it easier to sign those guys.

I’m not at all convinced that he could bring the Kentucky leftovers to UTEP. In fact I kinda doubt he could. Not to say he can’t still recruit but he’d have to go a different route than he has in the past. That’s why I question whether he can still recruit on the same level he did 12 years ago.

To be clear, yes I said he has shown interest in coming back. However idk if this current administration would consider a retread or who knows they might. If he came we couldn't expect him more than 4 or 5 years, bit that'd mean he was Successful yet again and I'll take that. It's no different with any coach that comes in, if they win they're gone

It's true that Kentucky is a brand that sells itself. So is Duke. And North Carolina. And Kansas. And UCLA. And several others. Yet Kentucky is consistently out recruiting all other powerhouses, year after year. It's an incredible feat, and illustrates that Kentucky's staff is comprised of amazing recruiters.

I don't expect that if Barbee was to return to UTEP that we would find a UTEP team full of McDonald's All American one-and-dones. But recruiting is largely about relationships. Barbee obviously, given his amazing recruiting success at Memphis, UTEP, and Kentucky, has some great contacts: coaches (both high school and AAU), players, players' families, etc. And each of those coaches have players that are talented, but not yet ready to produce at an ultra high level as a freshman. Barbee should be able to be very successful in bring in this type of athlete. If he returns to UTEP, I won't be worrying about the caliber of recruits we'll be bringing in.

You can’t argue with the players he brought in. He recruited Culpepper from Mmphis’ back yard. 3 players made it to the NBA (Stone, Moultrie, Character)so you can’t argue with that either.

Any coach that is brought in be it for football, basketball, softball etc it’s unreasonable to ask them to bring in NCAA Championship calibre talent. But it’s not unreasonable to ask them to bring in conference championship level talent.
