Golding and Coaching Contract

UTEP has 1 basketball and 0 football conference championships in the 20 years they’ve been in CUSA. You may want to go higher, but UTEP can’t even compete in CUSA.

UTEP makes bad hire after bad hire. That is their problem, not anything else.
Ok that’s great it’s easy to bag on someone when they are down but what are your solutions? Obviously you want sender and Golding gone but who are your replacements ? And we have a terrible fanbase how would you fix it ?

NMSU played their home games at Eastwood HS a few years ago. Then they ended their season prematurely because of all kinds of mess. That is being down. UTEP is not that.

You have to spend money to make money. That includes firing poor performing coaches. That is UTEPs problem. Overpaying for coaches like Terry and Bronzeing, then giving them contract extensions or not firing them is their only problem. You could have hired an assistant somewhere and achieved the same results or better, for a lot less money.

When Bronzeing is the 2nd highest paid coach in the league, that is not something a “poor” school does. A “poor” school wouldn’t be able to afford to do that.

“Terrible fan base” but consistently leads CUSA in attendance. The solution is hiring the right people. That’s it.

If I am Senter, I am swinging for the fences and calling Will Wade, Kimani Young, Ben McCollum, and Craig Smith. Then working the way down the line.

The fan base is slowly dying from the mediocre results. Football has always been bad with a few bright seasons, but basketball has been what most fans look forward to. Not having made the tournament in 15 years is absurd, getting blown out by NMSU by 30 is absurd, getting swept by Jacksonville St/MTSU/WKU is absurd but I am expected to still spend over $800 per season ticket on a team that ended the season on a 1-8 skid?

Make it back to the tournament consistently is how you fix these problems and it is becoming apparent that the current admin and coaching are not the ones to get it done.

All you have to do is look at the runner ups for our past cycles and you can see that UTEP has always attracted talented coaches. We are not a damaged brand. From Tang to Jans with a bunch more in the mix. All have shown they can coach at the highest level. It's just that Senter has been making the wrong hire consistently as well. So I think the problem is pretty clear. Fool me once, fool me twice...here at UTEP you get to fool us half a dozen times I guess.

Honestly this is a ridiculous question. Off the top of my head I would like Kimani Young to replace Golding, but if he's not interested - I don't know. It's not my job. I don't really follow whom the best head coaches at smaller schools are, nor the hottest assistant coaches. I certainly have no idea about quality ADs or Associate ADs. Again, I'm not in the business of hiring those positions. What I do know is that since Senter has been here we've had exactly one winning season each in football and basketball. In basketball, that season came when Golding was coaching Terry's recruits, and it was hardly an impressive season. With his own recruits Golding has yet to have a winning record against Div 1 competition. That's enough to tell me that neither guy is performing well at his job. It's the University President's job to hire the AD and the AD's job to hire the coaches.

Give any of us random posters 6 years at the job and I guarantee we won't do much worse than Senter and some of us much better.

But on the flip side, this is true as well. Circumstances suck surrounding a truly good soul and Golding is a good person in an industry full of "egos & aholes".
I couldn't care less about how annoying our coach is. If he's the most annoying coach in the country but can win then I'll take him. We've had too many nice guys around here and they have done nothing.

Exactly. Barbee wasn’t a people person but he was a great recruiter and got us to the tournament and won a conference title. I’ll take that any day.

I liked having Barbee as coach. I thought he was solid all the way around. I do think his recruiting "ability" was skewed, though. I think he recruited well to UTEP because of his ties to Memphis. It is my opinion that his recruiting was sub par at his next couple of stops as head coach, because his Memphis pipeline had dried up. Just my .02 worth.

I may be wrong here, but it seems to me that in both sports a lot of the success of HCs comes down to the quality of the assistants they are able to put on staff. The assistants seem to do a lot of the recruiting.
It is the collective. You could have put the dream team behind Kugler, but if your head coach wants to run a 1970s offense, recruit El Pasoans and doesn’t care about special teams you’re still going to be a disaster.
