Kaplowitz: Which Jersey Should UTEP Retire Next?

IMO Stefon Jackson and Antoine Gillespie should be no-brainers. Interesting list he compiled:

How you going to retire Stefon but not Randy? I would retire both of them, but only because they were all-time leading scorers. Randy at least played on good teams.

I think all the “honored” players should be removed from the arena and place around the concourse. Give them a picture and some information about them. Give people in their early 30s or younger, a reason to give a shit about Brandon Wolfram and Ralph Davis.

Randy played may have played on better teams but it is retiring the jersey, not the team. Stefon should be the next jersey retired as he is the current points leader in UTEP men’s history. Realistically they should retire Stefon next season and Randy the season after.

I do agree that they need to do something else regarding the honored numbers, and having informational posters with their accomplishments around the arena is a good idea.

For some reason I thought Randy had passed Stefon. I only think Jackson should have his number retired. Randy can be in the honored group.

I agree with you on Randy. He was beloved and great

I may be out of sync with everyone here. I'm not sure about retiring any of these guys numbers. Honor? For sure.

How is Julyan Stone not on this list?

I really liked JS, but jersey retirement? The only player I’ve ever witnessed being worthy of it is Tim Hardaway.

Some of these other guys are UTEP greats…but not great great.

In my opinion, both should be a requirement. UTEP great and considered great by those outside of UTEP. Just my own .02 worth.

I specifically said NOT jersey retirement for any of these guys. I totally agree with your argument.

My point re Stone is just if you’re talking about greatt players he should be in the discussion. Probably the best PG since Hardaway. He didn’t score a lot but had a 2:1 A/TO ratio as well as amazing D.

Of the 7 players whose 5 numbers are retired, I believe 6 of them are in some form of Hall of Fame.

1966 team -Lattin, Flournoy, Hill (Naismith)
Richardson (Naismith and college)
Hardaway (Naismith)
Archibald (Naismith and college)

The only one who isn't is Barnes, who was a #1 overall NBA pick and won a gold medal in 1964.

I like a lot of the mentioned players, but to retire a number should mean something more than "he was good and I liked him"
