Kaplowitz: Which Jersey Should UTEP Retire Next?

IMO Stefon Jackson and Antoine Gillespie should be no-brainers. Interesting list he compiled:

How you going to retire Stefon but not Randy? I would retire both of them, but only because they were all-time leading scorers. Randy at least played on good teams.

I think all the “honored” players should be removed from the arena and place around the concourse. Give them a picture and some information about them. Give people in their early 30s or younger, a reason to give a shit about Brandon Wolfram and Ralph Davis.

Randy played may have played on better teams but it is retiring the jersey, not the team. Stefon should be the next jersey retired as he is the current points leader in UTEP men’s history. Realistically they should retire Stefon next season and Randy the season after.

I do agree that they need to do something else regarding the honored numbers, and having informational posters with their accomplishments around the arena is a good idea.

For some reason I thought Randy had passed Stefon. I only think Jackson should have his number retired. Randy can be in the honored group.

I like that idea! Damn Kane you can have some positive thoughts!

I agree with you on Randy. He was beloved and great

I may be out of sync with everyone here. I'm not sure about retiring any of these guys numbers. Honor? For sure.

How is Julyan Stone not on this list?

I really liked JS, but jersey retirement? The only player I’ve ever witnessed being worthy of it is Tim Hardaway.

Some of these other guys are UTEP greats…but not great great.

In my opinion, both should be a requirement. UTEP great and considered great by those outside of UTEP. Just my own .02 worth.

I specifically said NOT jersey retirement for any of these guys. I totally agree with your argument.

My point re Stone is just if you’re talking about greatt players he should be in the discussion. Probably the best PG since Hardaway. He didn’t score a lot but had a 2:1 A/TO ratio as well as amazing D.

Of the 7 players whose 5 numbers are retired, I believe 6 of them are in some form of Hall of Fame.

1966 team -Lattin, Flournoy, Hill (Naismith)
Richardson (Naismith and college)
Hardaway (Naismith)
Archibald (Naismith and college)

The only one who isn't is Barnes, who was a #1 overall NBA pick and won a gold medal in 1964.

I like a lot of the mentioned players, but to retire a number should mean something more than "he was good and I liked him"

My bad. I don't read well on Monday mornings. Good assist to to ratio. Agree, his defense was stellar.

Not to retire but to honor some how. Best inside player I ever remember at UTEP, and one of the toughest, was Derrick Caracter. He was totally engaged with UTEP and the team for two years. His transfer year he was on the sidelines every game cheering on the team. When he earned his eligibility, he gave everything, every game. Scored 20 points and had 9 rebounds against Butler in the tournament. At 6'9" he was just a massive inside force dominating all the bigs he came up against. Wish he'd stayed one more year.

That was all Barbee. Even his own mother stated back in his prime (prior to UTEP) he had a bad attitude. But yes, he gave it his all. His total domination of OU for his first game in a Miner uni made me smile eat to ear.

You’re right I looked. Other than make the NBA what did he do that was so great? I mean , Julian Washburn made it to the NBA if that’s the standard
I think he was an excellent player. His stats don’t stand out, but he should have some kind of recognition in the DHC. Not saying a number retirement though.

You wouldn’t retire the jersey of the man who owns the alltime scoring record, Stefon Jackson? I May be wrong about this but didn’t Julyan Stone only play one season for us ?
Great scorer. Had a knack for putting the ball in the bucket. Shot at a pretty good clip. I mean this with all due respect, he just didn’t make anyone around him better.

Agreed — except for Jackson. Top scorer means a great deal. His record may never be broken.

I went to that Butler game. We led at the half. Butler damn near won it all.

The minute that game was over, so too was our basketball future. Hard to believe it’s been 15 years.

Not really. We could have hired Billy Gillispie. We could have hired some other assistant coach. We could have hired the 2010 version of RT or JG.

Instead we hired Tim Floyd. He promised big things and complained about a league he couldn’t even win. UTEP wanted a coach who wouldn’t leave for bigger things and we ended up with a coach who quit on the program and relegated it to trash.

Floyd bewitched all the older boosters. What a dick and a fraud that guy was here.

Bob Haack was a legendary area High School Coach who won a State Championship at Santa Teresa and took Hanks to the Final Eight.

Coach Haack passed away in October 2016. Tim Floyd showed up to the Funeral and talked to everyone like they were all good friends. He was very engaging and stayed the entire time.

I used to think this guy is such a egotistical dick and he couldn’t have been nicer the only time I interacted with him

I think those players were all great and they had great accolades at UTEP but did any of them have any postseason success? That’s why I’m against retiring any more
