Maybe Natalicio will just drop sports altogether.

If nobody shows up in the stands that means no ticket revenue. The Sun Bowl is literally starting to fall apart from what some of you have said; renovating the Sun Bowl will take some serious $$$. If UTEP were willing to pay its football coach a competitive salary then maybe they could field a competitive team, which would mean more butts in the stands and thus more revenue, paying for itself. But of course that's a gamble: what if UTEP spends all this money and the football team still sucks, with nobody going to the games? Then UTEP would have dug quite a hole for itself!

No, the least risky option is just to drop sports altogether. Maybe go Division III (no scholarships) like MIT, Caltech, and the University of Chicago. (Remember that Chicago used to be in the Big Ten! There's a role model for Natalicio: drop out of the Big Ten to focus on academics.) Academics come first for Natalicio, so she should follow the lead of the academic elites and really commit to it.

STFU, get out of here with that will never happen. NMSU has been much worse and they haven't closed doors. Please delete this post to save yourself the backlash lol
Like I care.

NMSU at least makes the NCAA Tournament in basketball just about every year, so they have something to show for it. What does UTEP have to show for it in the last several years?

Maybe she should just retire instead.

Big salaries don't always translate into better results. The hard truth is schools like UTEP are always going to be locations for up and coming assistants, or experienced coaches with baggage, no matter how much money they realistically can afford. There are also some unique incentive based work arounds for schools to put a financial carrot on their coaches. Kansas wrote a contract for their coach that gives him 100k for every victory over a P5 school. He's the lowest paid coach in the Big 12, but the potential is there to shoot him up there if he's successful.

More locally, Mike Price got $1 for every ticket sold in the Sun Bowl, which meant he sometimes was getting $50k a game in the early years. Things like this I really like because it rewards coaches for success. Seeing coaches at public universities, that literally are the highest paid officials in the state, perform poorly, and then get fired (and paid) before their contract is up, is a huge waste of public (or donor) funds.

I think money is better spent on facilities, recruiting effort, and event experience. But I also think if the right person comes along, UTEP will find away to pay him. You have to remember, Kugler got the first time head coach starting package, and it looks like it was the right decision. Paying him more would have been money down the drain, and you could argue he's already making too much as it is.

Track and Field championships

The last time UTEP Men's Track and Field won the team title in:
Cross Country: 1981 ('83 title vacated)

Indoor: 1982
http://www.ncaa.com/history/trackfield-indoor-men/d1
Outdoor: 1982

The old Western Athletic Conference was much better than C- USA. It was a much better test going into regionals and nationals.

UTEP did win some individual championships, but yeah, it's been a long time since they won any of the team championships.
