OT: El Paso in Top 10 in American migration patterns (declining population?)

El Paso for many, many decades has grown and grown steadliy. Not like San Antonio, Fort Worth or Austin growth, but a steady growth none the less. This one is a bit of "head scratcher" to me.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/mone...ans-abandoning-population-migration/35801453/
El Paso's population did grow by 5%. However, El Paso's growth is mostly caused by a high birth rate and immigration from Mexico. El Paso, unlike, most Texas cities, has more people that leave the city than people who move into it. This is the infamous "brain-drain". Our best high school students go out of town for College, our best UTEP graduates leave town for work, etc.

So yes, El Paso's population growth has been steady, despite the fact that more people leave El Paso rather than move into it.

El Paso has been fighting "brain drain" for at least the last 15 years or so by trying to improve the city's quality of life services and attractions. El Paso's median age is around 31 or 32 yoa. They also appear to be using county data instead of City population data.

Yes, I left because there were better job opportunities outside of El Paso for engineering. What's preventing El Paso from attracting more high-tech jobs?

Maybe now that Khalid, Aaron Jones, and Big Will are getting kind of famous. They could maybe buy houses in El Paso. El paso could finally have its own Celebrity row or mini Beverly Hils.

Even the minimal jobs pay a lot more. I’ve seen job postings in the Austin area paying $18-20hr for yard workers. Yes people that cut grass and leaf blow stuff. Cashier jobs for $12-15hr. Even waitresses can expect to make more. I don’t know how many times I cringed in El Paso when I would see people leaving a $2 tip. While it’s not uncommon for people to leave $10-20+ tips over here. While I do think there is money to be made in El Paso the problem is employers are used to cheap labor and are not willing to fork over extra pay.

And Fort Bliss. Northeast grew because soldiers decided to stay and call El Paso home. My father is an example.

It's a lack of capital, which means rich people or big companies. Yes, we have Paul Foster, but other cities have a handful or more of those kind of guys. A lot of it was self-imposed with the city being behind the times in creating a business friendly environment, thus companies going elsewhere. Some of it is just how remote we are.

Hmmmmm. It would be a wise career choice for a player yet to play a game, to buy 3 houses right? Maybe you can suggest for him to buy some pet sharks, lions, or elephants as well.

Im not saying now. Im saying if he ever gets a big contract. If he plays well in New York qnd becomes the player they hope he will become. He will make lots of money on and off the field.

I always dreamed of maling NBA when i was younger. Also if i ever won lottery. I would buy a house in El Paso it would be my main home. Then i get a place in California and somewhere in New York.

That is how many athletes go bankrupt.

How close did you get to making the NBA?

What offensive linemen have big endorsement deals? How is he going to make lots of money off the field?

Will made a 3.5 million dollar signing bonus. One of the best things he could do at this stage is invest in a few properties and diversify the rest until he can he can make a better contract. If he never does (knock on wood) his 5 million plus guaranteed can go a loooong way if he is smart.

After taxes and agent's fees that's probably about $1.25 million. NYC is a very expensive place to live in. My advice for him is to take $1 million and put it in a account and don't touch it. I think buying multiple houses is not wise advise.

In new york if you become popular and good there will be plenty of opportunities he just needs to be smart. Also that he is Latino in the NFL and New York even more doors will open. But thats if he is not a bust.

Name me the last NFL guard that was popular.

With his 1st signing bonus alone, he will take home about $2,050,000. His BEST investment option at his age is real estate (amongst other short term/5 year type investments he could make like CDs, etc.). He would also have more than enough to pay off any debt or loans and start a retirement account and invest on the market for the long term.

In his situation and location, buying a home and/or some other investments properties would be the best thing he could do because 1) he doesn't have to worry about interest, and 2) properties are in high demand in the areas he might want to purchase or invest.

Investing in real estate is a bad idea. You have to pay for the upkeep of the property, property taxes, etc. Who knows how long Will is going to play. And don't forget that NYC is very expensive. I say set money aside, don't touch it, and invest in a Roth IRA.

So you have limited him to only personal rental properties in NYC? Not sure what the concern is about upkeep or recouping property taxes. Do you know much about real estate investments or do you just maybe own a home in El Paso? Real estate is a proven commodity. Obviously there are possible pitfalls in real estate, but that depends on many variables (just like the stock market).

Does he qualify for a Roth IRA and how much can he contribute? Will a Roth IRA help reduce his taxable income since he is now in the highest bracket? If he does qualify and want to pay tax on it, then this could certainly be one of his many long term investment options that I already mentioned. Maybe you should read my entire comment instead of picking out what you don't agree with and jumping.

No, he does not qualify for a Roth IRA. He will make over $135,000 this year, which is the maximum income limit allowed and means that he is not eligible to contribute to a Roth IRA. Even if he was eligible, the maximum contribution that one can make to an IRA is $5,500 per year, unless you are over the age of 50, then you are allowed to contribute up to $6,500 per year. Even the 401k contribution limit is only $18,500/year.

He could still invest his large signing bonus in similar investments, they just won’t have the extra tax benefits as a IRA and 401k.

My mistake. Just invest it in something where you can't lose money. That is my advice to Will.

Real estate is not a proven commodity. Tell that to all the people that bought houses about 10 years ago. You are right that there are possible pitfalls. Why risk losing your money when you're 22?

I say set aside $1 million and don't touch it until after his retires from the NFL and invest for your retirement. There is no need for Will to be foolish with his money.

Im willing to bet you if Will plays good and becomes good. He will be in commercials in New York. He has the personality and I think he gives great interviews. New york hasn't had a high profile guard in long time. I believe 2nd round is the highest they gone for a guard. We fans have been wanting the Giants to fix the oline. Will has already been getting a lot of pub. He is already a popular player.
