OT Grand Canyon Basketball

As Tio Bob said in then interview, marketing is just really the last piece.

Patino went off on them saying the crowd was the best crowd he's ever seen.
Loudest during timeouts.
Good guard play.
Dan M. is doing great things!

Grand Canyon led Louisville 37-36 at the half, but lost 79-70. Looks like a great atmosphere!

Meanwhile at UTEP...

Our fans suck!!! Talk about entitled!! We don't go unless it's a good opponent! We don't go unless we have the right way to play!! We don't go unless we are good!! We don't go unless we are in a good conference..... good lord!!! Be a damn fan and start showing up to these games and support these kids and then bring fire Floyd signs to campus or wherever you want to bring them... just support the damn players.... can't stand people with this type of thinking! You end up becoming part of the problem and your too stupid too see it

Really? Since the start of CUSA 3.0 UTEP has been the conference attendance leader. During 2.0 we were constantly second place behind Memphis. The fan base has shown up regardless of opponent, conference affiliation or record. The fans that had the fire Floyd signs are at the game supporting the team peacefully protesting the lethargic results. If you're happy having a football team ranked 124/128 and a basketball team ranked 300/350 then the problem is you not us who demand better.

See there it is...you guys say bob stull won't do anything everything is fine we are the leader in conference USA and you guys say let's settle for mediocrity.... and then I say let's support our damn players and everyone comes back we lead conference USA in attendance we are doing great.... make up your mind...

And I said I don't care about the fire Floyd signs!! Have everyone bring them to the games but go to the games and support those kids

No you said

I said we do support the team as proven by leading the conference. I know that if we had more successful teams we would easily average 40/10k instead of the misearable 25/6k which is good enough for BS. Why can't we demand better?

That's what I am saying why can't we demand better from our fans?? These kids are working their butts off support the damn team.... everyone bring in fire Floyd signs but support the damn team.... leading conference USA in attendance is no great thing.... at all!!

Leading conference USA in attendance or Grand Canyon fans in that video which is by far more impressive??? Like I said bring your fire Floyd signs.... hang him by a noose whatever you want... just stop being crybabies and support the players !! They want to win just as much as we do

Stulls not getting rid of floyd either way!! So might as well support our players!! We always point out other teams saying look at the crappy fan support who would want to go there?? Now we are gonna be THAT team?

I talked to a few old boosters last night -- Floyd die-hards. They're too classy to openly slam him, but it's obvious even they know he's done.

Grand Canyon beat San Diego State. Tim Floyd has been here longer than Grand Canyon has been a D-1 school and they have more postseason wins and zero losing seasons and won 27 games last year.

First of all, it's "you're" ....LMAO

In all fairness, they were playing Louisville. Don't you think we would damn near sell out if they came here? Of course we would. The last game we played Northwestern Friggin State! It's hard for ANY school to get excited about that matchup, much less a commuter school.

The guys that did the signs are HARDCORE Miner fans. The were part of the Maniacs when they attended UTEP, and still go to every game.

Purple, you go to every game? I doubt it. So don't bash the El Paso fans so much. Maybe I can borrow the signs since I sit closer and directly across from #firefloyd. As was previously posted by the pig, filling up the Don will only keep Floyd here longer. When it hits the bottom line number, it will force his hand. I don't blame folks for not going, but I will still be there since my tickets are prepaid and costly.

UTEP (Stull) is screwing themselves. They keep coaches too long because of friendships. They don't market. They alienate the fans from the program. They (he) are to blame.

I disagree. You seem to assert that we should part with our hard earned dollars and our few hours of spare time because of charity and a sense of obligation and the duty of fandom. Joy and pleasure be damned.

How about UTEP's obligation to provide a decent product? It's bad, objectively bad on every possible level. Athleticism of the athletes, skill, discipline, play calling, player development, marketing, atmosphere.

If you wanna selflessly give your money and time without expecting anything in return I think there are more worthy causes than giving a bunch of millionaires a free ride.

I agree UTEP athletics have become boring and predictable. However until a change at the AD level nothing will change. At this point everyone is too comfortable. I believe Coach Kugler will adjust his offense during the off season and I am hopeful that Coach Floyd can actually get the players he signed on campus and keep them here. I think Coach Floyd can get it done but kids leaving are not always the coaches fault as many would like to believe. The athletic department's marketing department sucks and I don't think Stull will get us back on track. He seems to be retired on the job.

When there is constant turnover every year, you have to blame the coach, not the players.
I agree that Floyd may need to change how and who he recruits but regardless of who the coach is kids will continue to leave basketball programs regardless of the school. This is a fact. Look it up. UTEP is not a Kentucky or Kansas. It's hard for us to absorb the loss of any player. This transfer problem has become a revolving door, that is only really hurting mid-major schools like UTEP. Why doesn't UTEP get any of these transfers? I believe that most of these transfers have various issues that we don't want to deal with. Floyd is going for High School kids hoping to groom them for a few years. Well when they leave it throws everything off. Should we become primarily a JUCO and or transfer destination? I don't know we have had success with these type of players in the past (Filli, Omar Thomas, Eddie Rivera, among others). I believe the best teams we had were a combination of young kids (high school) and JUCO studs. Artis has been a good player for us but why we have failed to bring in a JUCO big man to play with him is beyond me. Floyd needs to mix up his recruiting so we have a good mix of young and experienced players.

So why doesn't it hurt NMSU? Why are they consistently winning? Maybe we should recruit players from Canada.

MTSU the team that won the CUSA tournament and upset the #2 seed in the NCAA tournament had six players transfer into the program last season. Big difference from UTEP who seems to transfer out three players per season. The apprentice of TF seems to have it better figured out. By all means keep defending Floyd while other teams in the conference take advantage of the transfer problem and use it not as an excuse but a way to elevate their program.

Brilliant. Where did those players come from? How many were from UTEP? Where did our transfers go? Did they become players on championship teams? How did it work out for them? Were those coaches mean to those players who left their team? Did those coaches fail to adjust to their players? I know it was Floyd's fault. I finally get it.

  1. From various JC and other D1 programs around the country.
  2. None were from UTEP.
  3. Our transfers have ended up at various colleges scattered around the country.
  4. It is such a long list of players to review that I don't have the time or effort to research every single transfer. Maybe you could do the digging to prove to us that all those players are complete failures.
  5. See above. Time will tell.
  6. Unable to answer since I was not present during practice or games.
  7. Considering they didn't transfer out from those teams I would say no.

Ok. Nobody said our transfers were complete failures at their new schools. I was being a little sarcastic when I posted those questions. These problems exist at every school. When we get a new coach (one day) I hope this transfer issue settles down at UTEP. If not, nothing will change from what we already have. If it does I will be the first to admit that I was wrong about Floyd.

I want Floyd to succeed here in El Paso. I think we all do. The writing is on the wall. The my way or the highway method doesn't work anymore. Floyd has to recognize this and adapt his coaching style or he will get left further behind. The transfer epedimic is just starting off it will probably get worse in the next few years. You may be right the next coach might come in here and not be able to change the results. As the old saying goes stupidity is doing the same thing and expecting different results. We need to as a city and university keep experimenting until we achieve what we deserve.

I hear you. I think we all want the same thing. Just not sure which way to go. Maybe a change is in order. I will know more once I see how this team finishes out the season. UTEP has always been my team and they will always have my support regardless of who coaches them. I do agree that Coach Floyd should improve his people skills. That may solve some of our problems.

MAYBE??

What will make you change your mind by the way UTEP finishes the season?
If Coach Floyd can win with what he has left then I am hopeful that with the influx of next years class, we might be able to turn the corner on this thing. I fear making a change will set us back several more years. I keep looking for that light at the end of the tunnel with Floyd as coach but he needs these players to come through for him. If not I'm sure the pressure from the few boosters we have will do him in.

Win how many games? 10? 12? 15? 20? Something else?

Not sure if it's a number thing but I think as basketball fans we should be able to see if the ship is sinking or if it is starting to sail along as it should.

Grand Canyon is a for profit private school. Jerry Colangelo is behind the growth of GCU. He hired Dan Majerle. They were also going to start a division 2 or 3 football team, but put all there marbles in basketball, a new 5,000 seat arena and development of a campus that is eating up old homes in the area. Its a good development. Of course its new, its successful, they play "some" good teams. Once the new smell goes away, it will be no different that any other school. If a bigger school goes after Majerle, it will be back to square one.

UTEP has lost good coaches and lost their momentum. We need that momentum back.

Not a good place to be relying on your incoming freshmen class to help a program turn a corner...unless you're Kentucky.

Not saying it will happen, but built the right way, I could see GCU slowly materializing into a Gonzaga type school. Gonzaga wasn't built overnight, although they've been relevant for a long time now.

Majerle might be the kind of guy who would stay around at a successful little school, much like Few has stayed with the Zags. DM obviously likes Phoenix as he's remained in the area since the very early 2000s. It'll be interesting to see where it goes with GCU.

What choice do we have? We don't have much coming back and the way things have been we don't know how many will actually come back. Maybe if we could have signed a couple of JUCO kids to supplement this class in the late signing period. Not sure where the scholarships would come from though. Even with a new coach this will continue to be a problem.
