Likely cardiomyopathy (for whatever reason) that leads to fibrillation and cardiac arrest. We've seen it many times on the field/court. Hopefully he survives.
I don’t know much about cardiomyopathy, but if I remember correctly, that suggests a pre-existing condition, correct? Any possibility it could’ve been solely from blunt force trauma? He did get hit right in the chest.

Yes it does and yes it could of certainly been from trauma, but my thought goes straight to the heart especially when it's a 24 year old that needs to be defibrillated on the field.

Definitely. I assumed it was heart related. I didn’t word my question accurately.

Could it have been cardiac arrest solely from blunt force, without pre-existing heart issues?

My prayers are with Damar Hamlin. As an arrhythmia specialist, I believe the blow to his chest during a certain period in the cardiac cycle triggered ventricular fibrillation, a condition called Commotio Cordis. It is not associated with pre-existing heart damage or COVID

Yes It could happen with sudden damage to the heart or lungs that affects circulation or oxygenation. I dont think that was the case here, but obviously we cant say for sure. I'm not a trauma person, but I would think that the trauma would have to be much more severe and I wouldn't expect him to get up and then collapse. We'll see.
