Watching some WNBA and wow the Basketball level is bad. Why hasn't women's basketball gotten better??
Its seem like there has been no improvement.

It would be nice if they started dunking I thought by now there would be dunking. The guards in WNBA are good but the bigs need to get better.

Yeah I could never get into women's basketball. Maybe if my daughter started to play...

If the public wanted the WNBA they would be successful. But as long rich people will waste their money on political correctness this is what you get. I have no idea on how much money the NBA has pushed into the women’s league, but wouldn’t they money be better spent on schools, shelters, hospitals, and medicine.

Everyone is always better at spending other’s money. Even though I am not interested in the WNBA, I’m sure there are others that are. The NBA is trying to grow the sport and they have the money to do so. If attendance ever gets to a LaTech type level, maybe they will shut it down.

At least it gives opportunities to women and gives young girls players to look up to. The NBA shouldn’t be giving their money to hospitals that charge $200 for aspirin.

Ok set up clinics for those who can’t afford medical care.
Why support a product people are not interested in. I do understand that some people enjoy the game, but after all these years and still can’t make a profit then it’s time to say so long.
I have nothing against women sports as I go often to UTEP women’s basketball and volleyball. But professional sports are there to make money. If you have a flawed business model artificial means are just prolonging it’s death.

The Dallas Wings had over 6,000 fans for their 2019 home opener last year and averaged just under 5k a game last year.
https://www.espn.com/wnba/game?gameId=401104927

LaTech men’s team, which is supposedly a good program didn’t have a single game last year with that many fans. A whole 3,200 fans bothered to show up for a 13-4 LaTech vs CUSA champ North Texas last year.

To say they don’t have support is unfounded, as they out draw most of CUSA and most mid-major teams.

True. I have been to a few WNBA games in Phoenix and they were packed. It's not a bad product for the price of the ticket.

Will averaging 5000 fans turn a profit? If it does great!
At one time a German company owned Furr’s supermarkets, one of the owners told me as long as the the store made 1 dollar profit they were fine with keeping it open. As an owner I would feel the same way about any business. Make money or close it down.
College athletics main purpose was not to be a profit center. Yes they have turned into that function. But to compare a college program to professional teams is apples to oranges.
How many football leagues have shut down due to being incapable of making money. Were their players in less a role models to a group of kids?

Yes it is different, but you said there’s no market for it, and that’s incorrect. It’s not nearly as big as the NBA or top college programs like Kentucky and Kansas, but they do better than some colleges.

Those football leagues aren’t backed by the NFL, so their margins are razor thin. Very few kids would have their role model be an Arena football player that plays for their local team for 1 year. Most kids will gravitate towards the Bradys and Aikman’s of the world. There’s plenty of football opportunities available for men, but not much for women. That’s why it’s important, even if it loses money

If they would swallow some of their pride and accept that they aren’t as athletic as the men then the product would be better. They already play with a smaller ball, why not lower the rim 2 feet? And Candace Parker and her peers need to shut up with the wage gap bullshit. I’d like to see their collective bargaining agreement...maybe they are just as delusional as Rapinoe and the USWNT.

I think the USWNT women should be paid more. They won the WC while the men failed to qualify for it. The women’s soccer jersey is the top selling jersey for either men’s or women’s. Over 14 million tuned in to see the final between USWNT vs Netherlands compared to the 11 million that tuned in to watch the 2018 men’s final World Cup final. I wouldn’t call that delusion on the women’s part. They have the results, sales, and tv viewership to back it up.

Agree on the basketball.

I'm not sure how much money the USWNT makes or doesn't make but relatively speaking they are WAY better than the men on a world wide level. I would still much rather watch the men though.

I actually agree that they should get paid more with the same reasons you stated. BUT, their union signed a CBA accepting higher game base salaries while the men chose to accept a lower game salary with higher performance bonuses. A California judge threw out the lawsuit as it was found that the USWNT got paid more than the men on a game to game basis. They are appealing the judgement but their whole argument is based on would of, could of, should of. You can’t ask for more money after your Union voted and accepted the CBA.

They aren’t being screwed over by anyone...they chose their deal.

I’ve got nothing against the WNBA, merely said if your business can’t make money, it’s not a viable endeavor.
That was my point they need to be funded by the NBA. The failed football leagues didn’t get funded and folded. Even NFL Europe couldn’t make with the help of the NFL.
If they can make money with their product great if not I don’t see them as a success.
Women’s soccer is a totally different subject. They have made it but they are not in a professional league. Would a woman’s soccer league be profitable? Maybe, maybe not.

The men’s game has a unique dynamic that skews the way the men are perceived. The USMNT has better crowds and higher ticket prices, which brings in more revenue. The women simply do not have as much. I am not going to look into the TV ratings you brought up, but unless you’re accounting for both English/Spanish broadcasts, those aren’t true numbers.

Back to my original point. When the US team plays Mexico, the US team is helped financially by a Mexican fan base. And when they play certain Central America teams, in certain cities, the US teams do well too. The women certainly do not have the opponents fan base buying tickets like the men do.

Perception is reality, therefore the men are more financially successful and deserve more money.

The USMNT does not have better crowds. They average less than the women’s.

Doesn’t matter. If the UTEP vs Tech game had drew a sellout crowd of 50,000, would you and UTEP discount the sellout by saying 10,000 Tech fans bought tickets?
That’s a dumb argument. USMNT averages 23k a game. Mexico averages 65k a game. When USMNT doesn’t play Mexico it’s weak crowds. When Mexico doesn’t play USMNT it’s still strong crowds.

The USWNT is the main attraction for the 50k in attendance. The USMNT isn’t. Mexico averages 147% more than the USA in their own home country. The Mexico women don’t draw close to that anywhere in the world.

Don’t forget that the prize money and wages for men’s soccer both at the club level and international level absolutely obliterates anything the women bring in. The TV rights for the men’s game are bigger than the women’s game as well.

You’re the one that said the men had bigger crowds. I had to correct your wrong misinformation you spread. We don’t want fake news around here.

As a rule, I am right. You’re going off of one year and presenting it as a streak. You also posted an “alternative fact” saying the women’s World Cup drew a bigger tv rating than the men. Which isn’t true when Spanish viewing was added in. Also, it was the US’ own team that didn’t get as many viewers as Croatia and Netherlands. More soccer fans care about 2 small euro countries than our own women’s team.

I’m going by the latest information available. In the year 2019 one USWNT game drew more eyeballs than all of the USMNT games combined.

In 2020 and some still don’t want equality for the women. Even though they produce better results on the pitch, sell more tickets to the game, sell more jerseys, and draw higher tv ratings. Smh.

From SI article regarding the USWNT trial:

In a 32-page order, Judge Klausner suggests that WNT players’ predicament is their own fault. He intimates that they agreed to a CBA that they now regret. “The history of negotiations between the parties,” then78-year-old judge observes, “demonstrates that the WNT rejected an offer to be paid under the same pay-to-play structure as the MNT, and that the WNT was willing to forgo higher bonuses for other benefits, such as greater base compensation and the guarantee of a higher number of contracted players.”

They made their bed and now wanna change it cause they aren’t happy with it. Well, tough shit.
