Recruiting thoughts

I wish I could agree, but I think we're missing a PG and a PF. I hope your right, but right now does this starting line up really scare n e one? Again I'd rather be pleasantly surprised

PG/SG Omega Harris 6'2
SG Earvin Morris 6'4
SG Lee Moore 6'4
F Paul Thomas 6'8 or Trey Winn 6'7
C Matt Willms 7'1
I don't know man, I just don't know, I hope we pick up a surprise late recruit or 2
Mcswiggan can shoot lights out, has an excellent handle, can take it to the basket, take a pullup jumper from anywhere. He can also guard and is very athletic. He will make an impact on next years team and he can do this on a 6'7" frame and he is still growing.

Bench is real thin because any substitutes will be a large drop off in talent level ... Touchet, Vint, Flaggert, Caldwell. If the staff thought they were impact players they would have played last year when we needed bodies. So, problem 1 which you have already identified is we only have 1 PG. Problem 2 is an inexperienced/lesser talent level bench. I think Romine will be good and Vint will play only because of his experience. I like you hope we pick up an impact player as well.

harris
Moore
Morris
Thomas
Wilms

Bench
Wynn, mcswiggan, touchet, stalworth, vint, Romine and Caldwell....

I think we are gonna be a lot better than many predict...just with that lineup I think we will have 5 people who can shoot the ball....add mcswiggan off the bench and possibly touchet/ flaggert as shooters and I think we will have our best offensive team under floyd next year..all of these new guys coming in have good looking jumpers which is really going to help

Hey purp, at this time a year ago, what were you saying about the Miners then? In other words, what was your prediction for the season that just happened? Just curious.

Wow, you've made him an amazing player. A few weeks ago no one had heard of him, he sends out a mixtape, gets an offer, and all of a sudden he's Dirk Nowitzki.

I am excited to see him, but a handful of clips of him playing in empty gyms against so-so talent hasn't convinced me that he can play at a Division 1 level. Josh Brown came here after scoring 40 in a game in LA, and averaging 18 points and 9 assist per game at a high level in a LA. And he stinks. We've had more misses then hits, so I am going to take the wait and see approach with McSwiggan.

At the beginning of the season I thought they would make the ncaa tournament and finish top 2 but then I saw a few games and became extremely worried because of their lack of offensive power...and then complained all season about not having enough scoring punch to go anywhere..and irritated with the guard play.....

Basically my prediction was ncaa tournament and finish 1-2 in Cusa
They obviously didn't make the tourney but did finish 2

Just like everyone I have made some good prediction and missed on some...like I thought the miner team from two years ago would make the tourney and still think they would have if we didn't lose those 3 players... That killed that season (missed)
Watching his mixtape I said vince hunter would be the best player in that class ( unfair I guess because hamilton never made it)

Did you happen to read the article about McSwiggen's game in The Monchial Tournament (whatever that is) for under 20 players against The USA team? He scored 23 pts in a 79-65 victory over The USA team. It also said he shot 83% from 3pt range. Would like more details on that stat, but you must admit that if the story is accurate, it's pretty impressive. Looks like a winner to me and he's not a kid either.

Forget the talent mcswiggan is playing against in my opinion....

Two things I like about him where I come to the conclusion he will be a great 6th man this season is this....

If you look at his mixtape this can shoot it, once a shooter always a shooter....I think his shot may suffer a bit at the beginning as he gets used to the speed of the game but by mid year he is going to be a big piece of the puzzle....

2nd thing and this is going on what other people have said, Is that he impressed teammates when he came down here, and if that is the case then he should be fine as well....

Mc Swiggan could Surprise people and I hope he does, but we still need another PG unless Stallworth stays I guess

I think stalworth will stay, and honestly I really liked it when him and harris were in the game together...I know a lot of people thought he looked lost, I thought he actually ran the offense well the only thing that he lacked was a shot of any kind which can always be improved over the off season..... That is one thing I hope harris really concentrates on this summer is his shot....

Like I said I could be totally wrong but I think this will be the best offensive team we will have up to this point under floyd....I guess time will tell

I hear ya. Sounds plenty reasonable to me. The only thing I question is whether the GambleGate Miner team would have made the tourney. The Tennessee win was much like the Xavier win, but the thumping iowa put on us, exposed us early. That we couldn't shoot. We couldn't get the ball inside cuz iowa was so long and active. We had no offense cuz our achilles was severed that night. But, I think they would have been a bubble team and it coulda gone either way, so I get it. I will say I like the enthusiasm and I hope ur right about next year. Let's just say I'm taking a more cautious approach next season cuz pre season I thought this last team had us dancing based on early CTF comments.

Not to sound like an ass, but Stone never had a shot and he was a pretty decent PG....Would have been great if he had a shot.

Not sounding like an ass at all, however why be a good point guard when you can be a great one? :)...... If stone had a jump shot he would've done well in the nba

I agree that it has become harder to recruit at UTEP. The rise of other competent mid-majors, Floyd's reputation, El Paso's distance from other cities, and Stull not firing Darby are the biggest obstacles in my mind.

I don't think the conference affiliation hurts us that much, because we are losing recruiting battles and games to other teams in C-USA/One-bid league teams.

wow you really think Darby should have been fired for that? man are kids that sensitive these days?

Actually they are, some of my fondest memories growing up were playing Middle School football for Coach Johnson, who use to cuss us out in front of our parents/teachers/principals in broken Spanish. He gave us all demeaning nicknames and would show us what to do, by doing it to us (hard). I remember thinking it was funny and it was making us all tougher. I remember wanting to run through a wall for coach.

Either way, coaches can't behave that way anymore. When my little brother was in school, a coach got in trouble because he was recorded calling a kid a "fat, lazy a$$".

Kids today are different. In some ways better, in some ways worse, but in general, they don't respond well to any sort of criticism, much less public.
