I'm trying to get a little more basketball talk going here so bear with me...

In today's basketball video Smith says he is treating getting in shape "like a job". He is running in his spare time. He is big, smart and he can shoot too. I would like to see a bit more athleticism on defense, but that might come as he carves himself into a player. I think he is going to be big off the bench this year and a really good player over time.

We may see Flaggert some at PF also with Wade taking minutes at SF IMO.

Floyd also said that he is still looking at the 2 freshman PGs, but that we could see Osborne more at the point.

Due to the lack of depth inside, Smith will be the back up at both the 4 and the 5, by default. It is a big opportunity for the freshman, who honestly, should have already been in tip top condition. He is not super athletic, so it is important for him to get the most out of his physical tools. Unfortunately, I also see Flaggert stepping in to defend some 4s, like he has done in the past. Again, it always seems like player defections cause issues for Floyd every year. On Osborne at the point, we will need to keep a close eye on that. I think it does give us a better chance to get the best five on the court at the same time, I just don't know how effective Osborne will be running the team. To me, this is not a big sign of confidence for the two freshman points.

I'm excited about seeing Smith play the 5. A center who can spread the floor with 3-pointers opens up more possibilities for what the offense can do. Has UTEP had a center who can shoot threes since Jeremy Sampson?

Edit: I already forgot about Hooper Vint...

He’s agile, but doesn’t have stamina. I wouldn’t call him unathletic by any means.
