UNM Lobos football

He had a great initial season and then the next year wasn't as good. So he didn't leave them in a better place. He won 10 games a Texas too, took them to a Sugar Bowl.

Tom Herman has coached 8 years at 3 Different Schools. Only once did his team win more games than it did the prior season.
Then we have different definitions of leaving it behind better. He took over a program that went 21-17 in 3 years under Levine. And left with a 22-4 record after 2 years.

Took over after Strong at Texas. They were 16-21 under strong. He left with a 32-18 record. Once again it looks better on paper.

Yeah we do.

I think if your record gets worse each year then that’s not ideal. If 2 schools have fired you, that’s not ideal.

Everything is relative. Winning 8 games at UTEP is an accomplishment. But winning 8 games at Texas with a 240 million dollar budget is terrible.

Started 0-4 including a loss to a FCS schools, now 5-6. Just upset their 1st Top 25 opponent in 21 years last night. Coach is in year 1. How come UTEP couldn’t win 5 games this year? Beat a Top 25 team? They only had 14,000 for their upset last night. That’s the same number that the last 2 home games had.

“Scotty need 8 years to turn it around”
“Scotty needs his own players”
“Scotty has too many injuries”

Bronco and UNM have won 5 of their last 7 and could get bowl eligible with a win over Hawaii. Scotty is recruiting guys who think UTEP could win the national title.
Bro I hear you but it’s year one. Look at the recruiting class he has coming in next year. We are ending the season on a high note and have a high energy coach. Things are looking up

Coach Walden will get a pass this year and next unless there is something egregious that occurs.

UTEP is traditionally one of the worst jobs in College Football, other than Bob Stull, I am not sure if any other former UTEP coach has parlayed UTEP success into a better job.

Based on the history of the last 50 years, this will be Scotty Walden’s last head coaching job. So I think the situation gives a coach 3 years

If they don’t get embarrassed and UT had to play their starters in the 2nd half, along with a win over NMSU; I would give some credence towards “things are looking up”.

If he finishes 3-9 this year and then 4-8 in 2025, you’re running him back to kick off the MWC era in 2026?

Again, we all wanted Dimel gone. He’s gone. It’s year 1 for Walden. Year fkn 1. Yea, other coaches have done it in year 1, unfortunately we didn’t with a schedule that had 2 money games and ONLY 5 home games.

It’s annoying AF Kane. We get it, we suck.

Give it 1 more year. If Scotty is still learning on the job then let him go. But right now his recruiting classes look solid. Let’s hope for some retention, and that he learned something in his first year coaching D1. 2025 he SHOULD win at least 6 games and go bowling.

All we can offer right now is patience. Next year, if we don’t make it to a bowl game, there won’t be room for any more excuses. UNM played three “money games,” the #2 ranked FCS team, and a full Mountain West conference schedule. They’re now just one win away from being bowl eligible. I can’t even begin to imagine what our record would look like with that schedule.

Yes.

Walden’s best years were 3 and 4 at Austin Peay. So his Track Record from his previous job says that he needs a 3rd year.

Continuity is good for a program like UTEP. I don’t think chasing lightning in a bottle and changing coaches every 2 years to try and get one special year is effective in a school with a poor history.

It takes at least two years to implement a college defense according to college coaches. The linebacking corp has become so specialized in itself as compared to say, running backs. Mike, Sam, hybrid secondary/linebacker position for the d coordinators specialized defense. In the offense, we can plainly see the qb tell the rb which side to be be on; like Coach Kugler once said to the media, everything starts with the center then you work outwards. Simple gaps (alphabetical or numerical) everyone is assigned and you plow forward; with Kugler, literally, as he demanded power over design. On defense the linebacker has to tell everyone....everyone, how where to line up often during games after a quick glance of offensive set (the lb has to make split second decisions); hence, why you see him waving his fingers at db's to taps on the fanny on D linemen to shift and this happens constantly and pray no one blows an assignment. "Practice, practice, practice" as Madden would say (he felt players spent to much time with weight lifting rather than honing their skills). It takes two to three years to cement.

Mike Price caught that lightning with a highly motivated defense who were well skilled ready to go and all recruited by Nord. Some went to the NFL, that's how good they were. He lost coordinators but he couldn't recruit like Nord (But Nord couldn't coach like Price).

4 years is ample and realistic. 6-7 does damage. D1 is a money making machine, you have to sell. Price went 7 and Dimel 6 and both did a lot of damage and like an addicted gambler, UTEP had to "chase their losses" instead of calling it good after year four and starting over.

Someone like Matt Wells. Five out of six seasons went bowling at Utah State. Failed at P5. Back at g5 to redeem himself. Someone that has experience at this level of football and has been successful.

Great. You should apply when the next athletic director position is open.

Good. Then root for the Lobos.

Continuity? Yeah, worked out so well for the Price, Kugler, Dimel, Floyd, and Golding hires. Great.

People like you like to claim I am not a UTEP fan, but you don’t even know how long Mike Price coached here. One can argue he’s the “greatest ever” here. He coached here for 9 seasons and that’s not even counting the half year when he took over for Kugler.

Kill won a bowl game in year 1 and made the cusa championship game in year 2. I would say something similar for UTEP.
That's like lightening in a bottle. I can't imagine you're of the opinion that we give a coach one year and if he doesn't reach that pinnacle that Kill reached, we fire him?

Since there's a conversation about him, I'll chime in. Having met and talked with the guy a couple handsful of times, Tom Herman is a fvckn d!ck. I always knew he'd get his. Karma can be a beeyotch!!

He’s gonna get paid out by FAU and hired by another school as an OC. Give me some of that karma. 99% of working adults will take that karma.

Of course not. However, they demonstrated a successful blueprint for winning in our region, just as we did when we hired Price. UNM has now followed a similar path. Other approaches simply haven’t worked for any of us.

I don’t live in EP anymore, so I’m not able to attend every game. However, when I did live there, I sat through countless 2-10 seasons, and I would still do so if I were local. Yes, I support the 915 NIL movement and have backed various fundraising initiatives led by Senter.

Awesome! I hope you can become the next athletic director.

Remember when many people on this board predicted that Walden would turn things around by year 2 or 3 and then move on to a Power 5 job? I’d take that scenario any day over the continuity of struggling just to stay out of last place.

UL-Monroe, UNM, and NMSU can have 1st year coaches win 5 games or more, but not UTEP. Too much to ask. Best fans, worst results.

Mike Price had 7 Straight Losing Seasons. I'm guessing 1 or 2 years of being good is the trade off you have to live with.
