There are posters here who have said UTEP should drop out of CUSA and go independent to be like NMSU and play half a schedule of money games and the other half against the Liberty Flames.

Those posters should be happy with this announcement.

"Welcome to 2024 edition of UTEP football on 600 ESPN El Paso for the first game of the Hal Mumme era live from Lincoln Nebraska, I am Jon Teicher along with a drunken Bernie Ricono. Bernie tell us what to expect from the Mumme era...."

"Well I tell you what Jon"......
Actually, I hope it's the first game of the Bo Pelini era. Imagine, Bo Pelini returning to coach against Nebraska. Nebraska hasn't been good since they booted him. They haven't even had a winning season since 2016 (this is NEBRASKA).

Well, it's relatively simple.
Yeah. Get yourself a tune-up game,
you know?
A what?
A tune-up game, like the pros have,
with a hungry team not in your league.
You bring them here
and kick the shit out of them.

The Longest Yard (1974)
The Burt Reynolds version. Not the piece of shit Adam Sandler remake.

No way, Jose. By that time, Hal Mumme will be coaching in the NFL, after it merges with the XFL. ;)

Ooooohhhhh yeeeeaaaahhhhhh! From Cheyenne County to Lincoln, or bust!

FYI, cable was born in Cheyenne county Nebraska.

I think that it would be home run hire, but when he wrecks shop in the next two years at LSU as their DC with all that talent, UTEP won’t be able to afford him and he’ll be back on the P5 scene ASAP. Had he stayed at Youngstown maybe UTEP woulda had a shot once Dimel goes back to K-State....

Pelini at YSU (contract):

“ His [YSU] $213,894 deal expires on Feb. 28, 2019. It's the same time when Pelini's previous employer, Nebraska, is done paying $7.65 million of buyout money after the Huskers fired Pelini following the 2014 season"

"On three-year contract, Bo Pelini to make $2.3 million annually as LSU's DC"

He can pay his own head defensive and offensive coordinator at UTEP if that pipe dream were to happen.

Perennial national power?

Perennial national power?
"Lasting or existing for a long or apparently infinite time; enduring or continually recurring."

I feel I can safely bet they have been a national powerhouse longer than most have been alive who are registered in Digs and there are some alums and fans who have been part of this site since the early days.

Nope. Up to Solich days. Fired him, abandoned the run game and can't get back to the top is the best way to put it. Every game is still a sell out and talked about at the Nebraskan Thanksgiving table.

I thought they were pretty good under Pelini. They made four conference championships under him and won at least 9 games in every one of his full seasons.

Move to Big 10 also hurt. Hard to win in the Big Ten with wide open football it's all about power and size. Nebraska seems to have had a hard time adjusting. The days of busting 80 yard running plays up the middle and rushing for 500 yds a game are long gone. Loved watching that style!

Funny thing is the remake mentioned Appalachian State in this line, who would beat Michigan two years later.

Take a drive thru Nebraska if you can. My Nebraska relatives are "let's do this!".

Haven't been the same since......
