Has there ever been a year where Utep lost to a FBS/D2 school and ended up having a decent season? I for one don’t recall. Before the season I believed 5-7. Now I think the ceiling is 3 wins and the floor 1. Walden is going to have his work cut out getting El Paso to give him another shot though!
Not a one. Heck most UTEP coaches beat the FBS teams and still suck. The last FBS loss was 2018 to NAU. I remember they looked way worse than tonight… all they could do was run Locksley up the middle losing 30-10. Again I’m not trying to turn lemons into lemonade but the penalties were a nice shotgun blast to the face.

if anyone is interested

I'll pass. Watching Star Trek: Picard season 3 now. Fvck this sh!t show of UTEP "football." And UTEP "basketball."

Fvck you, year 1966. I've wasted my entire fandom life expecting more 1966s and instead eating sh!t sandwiches year after year in both football and basketball.

Ok, in fairness, we had some success in the 1980s but since then it's like if Jerry Jones owns UTEP athletics.

season 3....good luck, it barely saved the previous two

I will give Walden a pass on Nebraska. Colorado St, Ten,
Needs to win some Conference games, should be embarrassed by this loss.
He really needs to recruit offensive and defensive linemen. We were being pushed around like a two bit whore.
If he wants to run a three man front, needs to recruit some big dudes. This small d line is going to be a problem all season. O-line the same.
If he wants to play Skyler cause he a better runner, then let him run. He didn’t do anything for a majority of the second half.
But the worse part is the penalties, and wasted time outs. Shows a real lack of talent and discipline. The discipline is on the coaches, talent will have to be addressed next year.
I don’t see us winning more than three games.

This is the same team that Dismal left us. Still an un disciplined team of under achievers.
The defense is pathetic as you can just smash it down their throat without throwing any passes and win the game.

The one bright spot in the New QB, which will do much better once we starting losing some of Dismal's old players. Especially on defense, and the kicker needs to go now.

Don’t understand the love affair with Locklear. He may be a good kid but he’s an FCS QB. He’s not the answer.

I definitely don't think he's the future. But I have liked what I have seen from considering his inexperience. He is reliant on his legs, but his OL did not help him.

Crazy there was actually optimism when this dude recruited an FCS roster with an offensive scheme that hasn’t had success in the FBS. The program is in a bad place, I don’t care what the inflated Rival recruiting rankings say.
Yep. The talent level did seem about equal there... with an FCS Southern Utah. The team didn't seem to have excessive speed. Walden brought way too many Austin Peay players and started them.

Walden does seem to be recruiting good FBS level talent outside of the Austin Peay transfers. Still no excuse to lose to an FCS school.

Boy people turned on Walden quick.
15+ stupid penalties. Walden calls the plays. Time out management. All that fake hustle bullshit. He deserves heat. Last week the first offensive play the offense was huddled on the sidelines receiving another "fire em up" speech from the coach that led to them getting on the field late and got the delay penalty. Enough with the acronyms and slogans if you gon put out dog s h i t like this.

Delane Fitzgerald Post game interview

Scotty is right guy,
Respect to SU. They talked and then walked it.
It's Sunday Church day. Dear Jesus, why did our D line get so violated?

Scotty, the loss is embarrassing. But the play calling in 2 half was the same as last 13 years. Just own it.

Ah yes, the penalties. Coach, your Miners are as disciplined as a gang on Friday night who stole the case of church wine.

I'm not going to complain about the recruiting. Yes, I'm sure that someone can give me examples of teams that completely overhauled their rosters in a single season and won. That's the exception rather than the rule. My biggest concern is that having dumped Dimel I was hoping for improvement in three areas: penalties, time management, and play calling. We sucked in all three.

Two games is way too soon to give up on a coach. But we need to see improvement in all of these areas this season, or this hire will resemble the last two.

One other note. After what would become Dimel's penultimate season, I was hoping that Senter would fire him and hire GJ Kinne from UIW. Senter gave Dimel one more frustrating year, and Texas State hired Kinne instead. Brilliant move. That guy has the Bobcats going places.

That second half was a rough watch, and I don’t blame anyone for being mad and venting their frustration at the loss. Even me, with little expectations expected The Miners to win comfortably but the manner in which they lost overshadowed what little positives we saw.

With that being said I’m going to temper my frustrations because it is only game 2 of year 1. I’ll give Walden the benefit of the doubt because he’s adjusting to coaching D1 football and he’s still trying to find out what schemes and players will cut it at this level. Plus, as a young coach he’s got to find his way through this mess. I’d hate to see one bad loss or one bad season destroy this guy because he’s it for the next couple of years.

Personally, if he can manage to cut the number of penalties I can probably accept our fate. Plenty of these players are showing they’re not up to snuff and let’s hope the Freshmen are ready to go or Walden can recruit replacements for next year.

Edit: I was looking at the stats and Locklear went 22/29 for 295 and 1 TD. Plus he had 47 yards rushing and 1 TD to go along with 1 receiving TD. If you show me that stat line and you said UTEP managed to lose the game I wouldn’t believe it. The cynical UTEP fan in me wouldn’t be surprised but from a numbers perspective that was a hell of a game. We haven’t seen that type of stat line from a UTEP QB in a long time. If UTEP can shore up those penalties and get that blocking going there’s something there to work on.

Agreed. The defense is another story altogether, though, especially the run defense.

I didn't watch the game but saw we were up 17-6 at half and then lost. Sheesh. He needs to get a QB and somehow convince recruits to keep coming despite the losses. Also from what im reading he needs to get rid of the mistakes and figure out in game adjustments. I didnt expect an immediate turn around, but damn that was a bad loss. Walden is not going anywhere anytime soon.

I don’t think the QB is the problem. A star QB is never coming here anyway.

Agreed, Skyler inexperienced showed. I wonder if he was told at halftime to stop the scrambling? The second half looked like he loss his confidence.

If you look at the numbers Locklear wasn’t the problem. How much more can you expect from that kid? 1 TD passing, 1 rushing and 1 receiving? Put up that stat line in a win and we’d be calling him “Slash”. Plus we had 2 WRs go for 90+.

Unfortunately when let the opposing RB go off for 9+ yards a carry, you commit penalties galore and your kicker suddenly turns into Charles Barkley at the golf course it tells you how unbelievably special you have to be to overcome all that.

What players are in the starting lineup that were starters last year?

Can you call this Dimel’s team?

Locklear’s stats don’t tell the whole story. He’s erratic. Looks lost at times. Kills too many drives.

I agree with the 3 man front comments. It’s not going to work @ UTEP. That offensive scheme also doesn’t look too promising. Walden is going to have to tweak it if he’s going to have any success with it.

Did you really watch the game last night and feel like he’s the reason we loss? I don’t, I can give you 5 other reasons besides him.
*sarcasm* No, no. Much more easier to blame one person than to be reasonable like you and point out 5 different reasons

Skip to the 9 minute mark for those that want to watch. It’s 9 minutes of silence and miner talk logo cause we’re utep and can’t do anything correctly smh
But they’re not UTEP. UTEP has nothing to do with MinerTalk, because if UTEP were in charge of it, they wouldn’t have it. MinerTalk is solely a KROD product. Which is why Adrian is taking the phone calls on the AM side, while the real football broadcast is by Teicher on FM and the Internet.
