That second half was a rough watch, and I don’t blame anyone for being mad and venting their frustration at the loss. Even me, with little expectations expected The Miners to win comfortably but the manner in which they lost overshadowed what little positives we saw.
With that being said I’m going to temper my frustrations because it is only game 2 of year 1. I’ll give Walden the benefit of the doubt because he’s adjusting to coaching D1 football and he’s still trying to find out what schemes and players will cut it at this level. Plus, as a young coach he’s got to find his way through this mess. I’d hate to see one bad loss or one bad season destroy this guy because he’s it for the next couple of years.
Personally, if he can manage to cut the number of penalties I can probably accept our fate. Plenty of these players are showing they’re not up to snuff and let’s hope the Freshmen are ready to go or Walden can recruit replacements for next year.
Edit: I was looking at the stats and Locklear went 22/29 for 295 and 1 TD. Plus he had 47 yards rushing and 1 TD to go along with 1 receiving TD. If you show me that stat line and you said UTEP managed to lose the game I wouldn’t believe it. The cynical UTEP fan in me wouldn’t be surprised but from a numbers perspective that was a hell of a game. We haven’t seen that type of stat line from a UTEP QB in a long time. If UTEP can shore up those penalties and get that blocking going there’s something there to work on.
