UTEP VS BOISE ST THREAD

We won a bunch of tight games last year. While he was far from perfect, Artis brought a ton of experience at the point. We don't have that this year, and I think it showed down the stretch in this one. I thought the team played outstanding defense in the second half, up until Floyd decided to take the air out of the ball. Seems like that gets us more often than not. Hopefully, the team will respond in a positive way the next two games. We need more out of Thomas and Harris.

Fans with your expectations are why we never move forward at this university.

If you accept mediocrity and the "moral victories" that come with it, then that's exactly what you'll get every season. Maybe some of y'all are happy with that, but I honestly can't be.

Again, this is season 8 of the Floyd era, and nothing has changed...
Most of you expected a Blowout lol yes they choked, but it's early freaking relax haha

It's easy for many of the people to laugh it off and say, "So what, it is the first game." The reason is that they are so used to it that it has become second nature to them. Instead of it being a rarity, it is the norm.
Let it slide everyone, after all we are the defending conference champions and all those trips to the NCAA tournament things like this are going to happen now and then.
Again no accountability equals another no postseason.

Someone mentioned "sitting on a lead" and that's always been a sore subject with me. It's like a "prevent defense " in football. I think it's been proven that you should stick with whatever got you the lead in the first place. Aggressive, natural ball movement and trying to score; not playing keep away until the shot clock runs out hoping for a last second bucket. They started that bs today and it completely messed up their mindset where they became passive and lost the momentum that got them the lead they had.
I wish there was another old timer on this board as old as me that saw a Haskins coached game in around 1962 or 63. I think it was Colorado State and we were up by 18 points when he started putting the ball in the deep freeze. CSU started chipping away and we ended up losing the game. I think it went into OT. His strategy changed somewhat in future similar situations.
Anyone know how to access records of old games like this?

Funny you should mention that game. It also came to my mind when Frazier was lighting it up. Reminded me of when Polk got hot that game against Memphis and we went up by 12, I believe. My next thought was, "shit, I hope we aren't peaking too early again". I actually thought we'd hang on to win today. What was I thinking?

I was hoping to see Omega drive and kick, finish, or draw fouls down the stretch today.

Is Floyd afraid to win?always goes conservative, just dosnt have that killer mind set. Maybe he wants to be liked by opposing coaches. Don’t want to beat anybody by to much. Kugler was the same way, the few times he ever had a lead.

His reptilian cortex errs towards conservatism.

Just watched the second half (knowing what was going to happen). I didn't see any point where we slowed down. There were some missed shots on both sides. The coast to coast layup by Omega was good. BSU inbound defense was excellent on the 4 consecutive throw ins. That last turnover was tough but the lack of any rim defense by our bigs (particularly Thomas) on the last 2 drives by Hutchinson was horrible. Also, if Frazier makes a few free throws I think we were ok. Just my objective opinion but I'm not happy we lost!

Anyway, I think Omega must still be a bit ginger but man he needs to pick up the scoring pace. Our team is athletic and played pretty well all around in the 2nd half except the last 19 seconds.

His play was big time disappointing today. Yes, we have no more Artis; that senior leader, whom wants the ball in his hands up five with under a minute to play. That should be Omega's role this year. It wasn't today.

Omega is not Omega. He's done a complete 180 from last year. Wish we a more definitive explanation on the exact status of his back. Is it fixable? His absence right now is a bigger factor than losing Kelvin Jones.

As soon as they slowed it down... I knew they would lose, keep attacking! Geez and imbound the dang ball! Overall this is a better team than last season. They should have beat Boise. I dont think they will beat South Carolina... I'll gladly eat crow though. We needed Artis for one more year. this could be a good team. Lots more weapons. but will lack the leadership Artis brought.

Agreed.

My bet is that SC beats us by at least 13. SC was supposed to win yesterday, so they'll be playing with a chip on their shoulder. Our team was not supposed to win, but should have and blew it at the end. That is demoralizing (especially to a young inexperienced group), and i expect to see the affect of that loss on the court today

I think you're spot on. While most saw yesterday's game as just one loss, I saw it as a lost opportuntiy to gather some momentum and confidence. I honestly feel we would've gotten past So Ill and who knows what could've happened in the finals if our opponent had a sub par game and we had a particularly good game. The wins in the tourney would've been nice but they would be secondary to the confidence and momentum gained. We have the talent, but it just never seems to materialize as wins. Instead, this "one loss" was demoralizing. The mind set is much different today than it would've been with a win. Tanking in this game, which appears to be happening, could have long lasting effects. Some will say "it's just two games" after this loss, and to each their own, but this already reeks of yesteryear. It ain't over, but we didn't even bother showing up today. That is a systemic problem.

Paul Thomas is not as good as his playing time says he is. Not a good shooter and very weak around the rim. Both Osborne and Trey Wade are better shooters and much stronger. Paul should be coming off the bench because offensively he gives us nothing.

Thomas is actually a good shooter. He played well yesterday (without scoring much), but he may be festering over the last 19 seconds against BSU. Not being able to inbound well and then not guarding the rim on those last 2 drives hurt him and the team. He relies a lot on confidence and he will bounce back. I do agree he could be more athletic on offense, but most importantly he needs to rebound to get himself going.

Paul is a Junior, your confidence is supposed to be always there. Paul and Omega ain't playing like upper class men. Floyd doesn't have the personnel to run his conventional offense. Tempo has to be faster and more ball movement

And Boise St blows out Illinois St 82-64 (Boise was up 24 at the half). UTEP could be sitting pretty but now here we are 1-2, Frazier is hurt and Omega/PT are slumping. What a difference 19 seconds and mental lapses on defense can make. Come on miners!!!!!

Don't worry guys-- we'll go on a couple 2-game winning streaks once we start playing all those powerhouses in our conference.

Then, all the Floyd diehards will start claiming that we're "starting to come together at just the right time!", and "Floyd has finally gotten through to these kids!".

Of course, we'll lose in the second round of the conference tournament...but hey, we have some good pieces "returning" and there's always next year...

I don't like hearing Phil Johnson talking post game about how we'll be better later in the season, how we have inexperienced guys right now, etc. We only had 1 Senior last year, yet we have 7 new players this year! Yes, of course we are not playing as a team yet, of course we have a bunch of new pieces to fit together and learning to play together. Of course we will look better later in the season. But this high level of player turnover hasn't happened just once or twice, it has happened almost every damn year. At some point, the Coach has to take responsibility for so much turnover within his program. The early season excuses of learning to play together should no longer be valid when the root of that constant problem is a result of how you are running the program during the off-season. Plus, wasn't the Costa Rica trip and extra practices supposed to help us get a jump start on not having a slow start?

For the record, I think he do have some quality new and young talent(better than the past couple of years) and I hope it comes together before the end of the year, but it really sucks already being eliminated from an NCAA Tournament At Large birth 3 games into the season.

I’m really disappointed in Willms. His #s are ok against smaller teams, but he can’t handle a good big man. He got owned these last two games.

You’re on a roll, Defense!

NMSU will be tough to beat this year. They looked good tonight.
We might have a chance against UNM.

Exactly. That was my point yesterday.

Fair, but Memphis had Tyreke Evans. That guy was a baller and just crushed UTEP's neck as time dwindled. Man that guy was cool cucumber under pressure.
