Because he is to blame. He raised ticket prices without results. The city is not to blame, as usual UTEP is to blame. I took a look at the last 10 years of home games, excluding this year. From 2011-2020. UTEP won 37% of their home games (20-34). Out of those 20 wins, 6 were against FCS teams and 3 were against NMSU. 1 against Colorado St and the other 10 against CUSA teams. So despite playing 4 conference games a year, except last, the Miners have only managed to win 10 conference games in 9 years.
UTEP won 1 home game from 2017-2019 and that 1 win was over Houston Baptist, which they almost lost. They had winning home records in 2014 (5-1) and 2015 (3-2). Want to guess who those wins were over? The usual trash, NMSU, ODU, USM, UNT, MTSU, Incarnate Word, FAU, and Rice.
Lower level, bad, or mediocre teams is what UTEP has beaten at home. Add in, unjustified, higher ticket prices, and yeah, less people are going to attend your games. Not everyone in E Paso has the intelligence of Fili, and will just zombie buy tickets to watch horrible teams.
It’s going to take awhile for fans to “come back” and even then, they might never. A lot of people died during the pandemic. Even if they weren’t all Miner fans, their deaths probably had some effect on some fans.
El Paso has done their part supporting UTEP football for 50 years, with very, very little in return. Blame the administration and the coaches.
