0-12.

Only scored 3 Touchdowns twice that season. We lost every game but 1 by more than 3 scores.

Kugler knew he was getting fired and we had a 15-14 loss to WKU. That was his swan song and rally cry.

Other than that 1 game, it was a joke.

I went to some practices that year, it was sad. I posted about here and Kugler left me a message to delete it and I was not allowed back at practice

2003 for me. I think we still wanted to believe in Gary Nord following that 2000 conference championship and then Cal Poly came to the Sun Bowl and beat the Miners up 34-13. The game wasn’t as close as the score indicated. That night Miner Talk went past 1:00 AM because everyone was calling in venting their frustrations.

UTEP vs Hawaii. Oct 31st, 1992, Sun Bowl Stadium. Early afternoon game. Hawaii was a good team that year. Finished #20 that year. David Lee was coaching UTEP. The score was not the most embarrassing, but the play from UTEP was. They looked lack luster and limp. According to the local news who reported later, the Hawaii defense was even trying to get the UTEP offense to wake up and play some football.

SJSU came in to town and smoked UTEP in 2003 69-41. It was embarrassing.

There is more to that 92 game vs Hawaii. It is protocol to share video. David Lee staff accidentally sent actual video footage of game prep going into that game.

I remember that loss to Tulsa in 2003 was pretty bad too. I remember the stadium was so empty/quiet that you could hear the opposing coaches screaming instructions to the players Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t that QB set some sort of stadium record for yards during that game?

This started a streak of 12 losing seasons in a row before Bob Stull showed up.
Between 1974- 1985, the Miners record was 19 wins- 118 losses.

They were horrid, strange seasons. But very anxiety filled because David Lee was actually a liked coach by fans and players. Good man, but couldn't field a winning team. Ten years later that awkwardness rears it's head again. Gary Nord, same thing. Recruited players who would jump off canyon for him, but he lost control of the team. Both fired on Sunday mornings. Both coaches thought they'd get another year. "On the Straight and Narrow" minded men from good coaching trees.

You see mijo, you can't categorize UTEP football. You just remember the strangeness.

1975-1985 was definitely a decade of the worst football in college football. UTEP was always in the Bottom 10 rankings and battled Columbia for the #1 worst team in the country often during this time.

Unfortunately, these were my transformative years from kid to adult and this scarring is my basis for UTEP football expectations. Nothing could ever be this bad or inept in my experience with college football. I went to so many games during this timeframe, I definitely have scars of losing that mediocrity in UTEP football is a major achievement. Oh well................

Funny David Lee story. I was working my way through utep delivering party equipment. I happened to deliver tents tables n chairs to Coach Lee's house for a team dinner. He was trying to help me but I was an absolute beast at that time slinging chairs n tables like a gorilla. He asked me if I had any eligibility left. I just laughed and said, "I don't think so coach". Anyway good guy.

I don’t have a David Lee story, but I would always see him checking on students and walking around campus.

I had Geology with David Terrell Sr and a bunch of players and he would walk in and make sure the athletes were attending class.

He won 11 games, how many fans liked him? Just religious fans like you who don’t care about results?
He was a disciplinarian. Miner players on another miner site stated their feelings about him.

Kugler did not have success here. Built his own dumpster fire after strong criticism of Price. He rubbed people wrong, including fans. But yet there were personal stories, including family members of mine, stating how nice he was.

Shallowness is not inherited, Mijo. Take heart.

Would’ve won that game had our kicker not missed 3 FGs
Also, WKU went for a 2 point conversion earlier on. The WR was hit as soon as he caught the ball behind the line of scrimmage, but UTEP didn't make the tackle so he broke free and waltzed into the endzone. Wound up being a huge conversion

Yup. Ditto on liberal arts building.

Obviously maybe the worst decade of any college football team ever. The weird thing in that stretch is I think we had 1 win in 79, and that win was against a UNLV team that went 9-1-1, and of course BYU in 85.

I was too little to remember those games in the early 80s. How were those crowds compared to today’s?

I can only imagine if the entrance at times was a can of food for a ticket, from what others have said around here. Probably significantly lower

How the program survived those era is amazing
It was before the NCAA requirement for FBS home attendance requirements that had AD's at low level FBS school like UTEP and NMSU fretting, but as of fall last year was nixed and no longer exist. Now, CUSA is a stepping stone to FBS. How times have changed for AD's!

Read Uncle Bob's resume on the UTEP section for that time period:
