OT: El Paso Chihuahuas

So with last night's split won/loss doubleheader in Albuquerque last night, the Chihuahuas will have their first losing season in team history. A disappointing season to be sure, coming off the cancelled 2020 season and an almost entirely new roster for 2021. Despite that, it's still an enjoyable atmosphere at Southwest University Park. I know the parent MLB clubs can care less about wins, losses, division and league championships in the minor leagues. It's all about player development for The Show. But hopefully the Chihuahuas will rebound in 2022.

Although the Chihuahuas have yet to release their 2022 schedule, they will begin the season on the road April 5th at Round Rock. The first homestand will be April 12th against Oklahoma City.

Basketball pop up practice

I was able to make it to the basketball practice at Eastwood last night. Things that stood at to me were

Kalu hitting 3s during shoot around. That was a nice surprise.

Terrell’s aggressiveness attacking the basket and defensively. He locked up a couple guys. He was super passionate yesterday as well complaining to the refs and things of that sort. Hope that doesn’t happen during the season cause I can see some technicals then

Barnes knocking down 3s in scrimmage. He also made some nice dishes for easy buckets. He looks like an improvement from Powell.

Mbengue playing very little minutes in the scrimmage. He was wearing a brace. Went thru all drills but when the scrimmage started he only played maybe 3 mins in the beginning of it. They had three 10 min periods.

Gameday Experience Complaints

Scoreboard: Why are the down, or yards always wrong or delayed from what is actually happening on the field?

Audio: WTF is barbie girl blasting on the speakers? The music selection is very gay. Team was about to receive at start of 2nd half and some random ass slow song was playing on the speakers. Speakers also sound like shit.

Monica: She's got to go. Spend some money on a good and entertaining skilled MC.

Promos suck: You'd figure they would learn from the Chihuahuas or from seeing other D1 schools on the road.

UTEP band director speaker: Loud, too loud. Bring it down or find another way to communicate to the band.

Back to Audio at Sun Bowl: QB is trying to get the play, and we have loud ass music blasting. I think at one point it even caused a delay of game or a forced TO.

Very mickey mouse by UTEP. Simple stuff that can easily improve the experience.

El Paso's Four National Basketball Championships

Everyone is familiar with Coach Haskins legacy, but we don't celebrate the legacy of Coach Nolan Richardson as much as we should. Coach Richardson won 3 national basketball championships, one with Western Texas JC, an NIT Championship with Tulsa and of course an NCAA Championship with Arkansas. It's no coincidence that the four are linked either. Coach Richardson helped coach Haskins move in to the dorms when he first arrived. Just saw on another post that coach Richardson lost his wife earlier this week. If we believe that behind every great man is a great woman, we owe a debt of gratitude to Mrs. Rosario Richardson. We offer our condolences and wish peace and comfort to Coach and his family.
