I was shocked to see that UTEP received one vote.

You folks either did not read or want to believe the comments I have posted regarding the excellent quality of players Floyd has recruited and shall be bringing in the near future. To repeat myself "these excellent hoops players are the caliber that elevate their teams to be knocking on the doors of the sweet sixteen or the final fours"
I hope thats true. However, we basically have no margin of error to get to the ncaa tournament. The tournament win was great, definitely the highlight of the Floyd era. This team is exciting. However, the regular season is irrelevant. CUSA is a one bid league and will be for the foreseeable future. We may well have the talent to make a run in the tournament. In order to get there we have to win the conference tournament, and those are always a crapshoot.
I have seen many people on here claim that the regular season is irrelevant because CUSA is such a weak league. And for the Miners that may be true for this year, given our weak schedule. To believe, however, as I have seen some on this board claim (I'm not saying that this is you, Minerforlife), that our regular season record will always be irrelevant as long we are in CUSA is simply not true. Does anyone besides me remember when Tarkanian's UNLV teams were in the PCAA/Big West? There were several years where there wasn't another team in the conference that had a chance at an at large bid, but the Rebels were always Tournament locks. How about the WCC now? Even if St Mary's has a down year, does anyone think, with the preseason schedule and record that Gonzaga always has, that they have no shot at an at large? Had the non conference schedule been tougher, a gaudy record and regular season CUSA championship would certainly have us in consideration for an at large bid. The staff, however, obviously considered this to be a rebuilding year when putting together the schedule.
Even with this year's schedule, it's still possible. It would take a gaudy record with at least three of SIU, CSU, NMSU, UT Arlington, and Wash St having really good seasons, and a regular season CSU championship, but it is possible. Still, our best bet is still to win the CUSA Tourney, which, as Minerforlife pointed out, is always a crapshoot.
I hope you're right, but I dont think so. The difference between now and the 80's with respect to UNLV, is that there are 32 division one conferences. That significantly reduces the number of at large spots available. The WCC is very good basketball conference. Gonzaga, BYU and St Marys are perennial tournament teams. They are always in the top fifty in the rpi. CUSA is bad basketball conference. We will finish between 18 and 22 in conference rpi rankings. The last three years La Tech has won 27,28 and 27 games during the regular season. They didnt get in the tournament. Last year Old Dominion had 26 wins and a very impressive out of conference resume. They were ranked in the top 50 in rpi and didnt get an invite to the dance. Unfortunately, the committee is not going to take multiple teams from a low ranked conference. CUSA is a one bid league and recent history proves it. I hope im wrong and you're right.
ODU lost 5 conference games bro, that's why they didn't get in and lost in 2nd round of tourney. Not to mention they were still the first team out!I hope you're right, but I dont think so. I think you are right on the money about quick we'll drop as soon as we get a loss. Slow to rise...fast to fall. It's always been that as I recall even in the 60"s and 70They'll entertain us being a potential top 25 team as long as we're undefeated. As soon as we get one loss ( even if we're 15-1) they'll drop us like a sack of dirt.
I like this team, though. Don't think we're top25 material just yet, and we probably lose to a couple teams that expose our lack of depth in the post. I do however think we have the ability to win the conference and the tournament, especially when you consider how weak the conference is this year.
Should be an interesting and fun year....
No news on McSwiggan continues to baffle me. Hope we get all the facts once the announcement is finally made. Just don't understand how whatever the issue is could go undetected for this long, but I have the feeling that the NCAA is making a mountain out of a molehill. This long, long wait is not a good omen.Just wish we had Lang one more year ...but props to the team impressive. ......any news on Mc Swiggan
According to CTF, in an interview with Duke Keith at today's practice, he expects to hear from the NCAA regarding McSwiggan soon, possibly this week.
NMSU is a challenge tomorrow, and so is Scott Cross' UTA team Sat. They took down OSU in Columbus, and beat Memphis. Playing Texas tough right now.
