Did anyone see the Illinois/Penn State game last Saturday? Thanks to the new college OT rules that went into effect this season, the game went into 9 OTs before Illinois upset Penn State 20-18. Now while I took great pleasure in seeing Penn State lose, I find the whole college OT system to be absurd. I'm old enough to remember games end in ties after 60 minutes. But this whole starting at the opponent's 25 yard line, then going for 2 point conversions only after the third overtime, is ridiculous. The NCAA should adopt the NFL rules of OT. If after that the two teams are still tied, then the game goes down as a tie. Going for two repeatedly in an almost endless loop until someone wins is just ludicrous.

That OT was the saddest OT I've ever seen. No need to overthink overtime. Untimed quarter where the first team to score wins.

Should've never changed it. The OT rules were just fine as they were. If you want a change here is a suggestion.

Team captains will have a coin toss, the winner will have choice of playing offense or defense first. Both teams will go in the direction of the wind. If there is no wind, the direction will be chosen by the loser of the toss.

Ball will be placed on the 50-yard line and each team will have 4 consecutive plays unless terminated by an interception, in which to score the most points or gain the most yardage. If no team scores, the team that gains the most additional positive yardage shall be the winner. Positive yardage is defined as yardage gained while on offense only and must be in advance of the 50 yard line. If after 4 consecutive downs each, the two teams remain tied in all of the above combinations, additional downs will be played, one down at a time, alternating, until a winner is decided.

If a team scores a touchdown, it will be allowed to use its remaining downs, beginning again at the 50 yard line. A free down will be granted for P.A.T. attempts after each touchdown.

During Overtime, teams will be allowed one time out each.

An interception terminates the offensive team chances. They are credited with positive yardage gained to point of the last snap prior to the interception. The defense may not advance the interception.

Winner of the Overtime shall be given one point.

Why?

They should make it like soccer. 5 different players attempt 35 yd field Goals until someone misses.

I'm kidding btw

Ties are ridiculous….. I watched that game it was pretty exciting actually…. But I like the old rules better both teams should get an opportunity until someone out does the other like it used to be…… I hated the nfl rule to kick it off and who scored first

Don’t understand why it has to be so difficult. Coin flip to start, free kick,(like after safety), each team gets a possession. High score wins. Simple
