Does Anyone See The Sun Bowl Game Played?

As the El Paso Covid rate continues to rise, has anyone heard, or does anything think the Sun Bowl game is played? I do believe some bowl games will happen, but many will cancel. It is even financially possible for a game like the sun bowl to be played if there is less fans in the stadium? I dont think being bowl eligible will get you into a bowl game this year, especially with less bowl games.

Lots of questions I have too. Without the game, does the Sun Bowl Still receive TV and Sponsor revenue and if not, does it survive without it?

Hotel/Motel tax will save it for this year. It's a nice insurance policy for times like these.
If in fact the game does take place, it just wont be like normal bowl game festivities. Pep rally's, team visits, in fact so much changes I'm not sure a good chunk of these bowl dont get canceled. With the holiday bowl in san diego already a confirmed cancel I expect more. Could we see the sun bowl maybe hosting 2 higher caliber teams? The selections with cancellations would all get out of whack and maybe with the sun bowl prestige they fill 2 great teams. I just have a hard time believing if the 915 covid rate continues to rise, them allowing 20 to even 30k into the sun bowl. Maybe the bowl bonus would the only reason a team even agrees to come to El Paso for the game or most bowl games for that matter...just my two cents..

It’s ironic how we’re supposed to have enough money saved to survive for at least 6 months without income but most of these “businesses”don’t have enough saved to survive without one game.

I don't see why a bowl game would shutdown for good for missing one year. They will not have the payouts to the visiting teams to deal with. If they played the game attendance would have to be very low so not much income there. Very few traveling fans so the city won't benefit much if at all. If they just want to have a game to televise invite UTEP and the closest team willing to come. Also teams won't come early per usual, they will come the day before and leave right after the game.

I dont know how bowl games work as far as how they manage money. But I do know the Sun Bowl has a staff, office space, and Bernie Olivas. I dont know Olivas' salary but in 2013 it was $170,000. So I assume he's probably at $250,000 or more by now.

So if there is no game, no sponsorship, no revenue, no TV dollars, I am sure that its a pretty big strain.

The Sun Bowl does get a rental car tax, you have to wonder the legality of a tax that goes to an event that's canceled

WWII put a hurt on the game that was blooming and it came back bigger, better and stronger and I'm talking literally. The fans came back and the players who were practically men, physically and mentally from the war, transformed the game light years. Kugler ball would probably still be popular. j/k

It will survive and sell out next year, "I guarantee it".

Yes, since TV inventory of games is so limited, I think networks are hunting for anything to show. Since they are responsible for the payout for each team, missing fans should not be a problem. Only fly in the mix is if there are few eligible teams left playing, which is a possibility.

You do realize no one has rented a car since March. No rental car taxes flowing in is a problem.

I rented a Tahoe to take my son to Arizona for college and when I was there they had no vehicles. That wasn't the airport though.

Most bowls indicate that the payout will have to be lowered this year and if the Sun Bowl is played their payout will be much lower than in a normal year. SB income has 4 sources of income and only 2 will remain the same, sponsor and CBS. Car rental may be down and for sure ticket sales will be way down or non-existant. Teams that normally come from the ACC and PAC 12 may not be available and the SB may not know that until very late.

If the SB is played it will be because CBS and the title sponsor want it to be televised and there may be teams in it that would normally not be there.
