NC State is fun to watch. They just don't have the tradition to bring out casual fans.
No pac 12 team likes coming to sun bowl. Sun Bowl needs to dump Pac 12 for Big 12
Not true. USC was the only Pac 12 team that ever complained about coming to the Sun Bowl.
Not true. None of the Arizona or California schools like coming to Sun Bowl.
Bernie has let the thing slide in the opposite direction.
You have proof of that? Stanford and UCLA never complained when they came here and ASU never complained when they came here.
That is sooooooo unlike you.
The Pac 12 never wants to come here because we are so far down their ladder. They are disappointed and pissed. Damn near every year posts on twitter and facebook show that. We don't need proof, son. It's been obvious for years.
Bernie is trash and has been for years. He gets paid to do a cushy job and does nothing to make the Sun Bowl a great game. Why should he? It's not like he will get fired. Part of the good ol boys network here in El Paso. The object of the game SHOULD be to bring in the best teams AND the ones that will bring in the most fans. In doing this, the visitors help our city by spending money. Bernie wants to fill the Sun Bowl with locals. That's bad business and he should go...
Typical
Again, since you are slow, I will repeat......
The purpose of the game is to have good teams that will bring a lot of fans to El Paso. Just because EL PASOANS fill up the Sun Bowl doesn't mean he's doing the job correctly. Having an ACC team come here brings a few thousand (not including family) Each year (I haven't trolled this year doofus) comments are made from pac 12 schools and their fans how much they don't want to come here. It shows in the lack of fans in our city for the game.
Other cities want VISITORS to fill their bowls. Why do you think the New Mexico bowl likes us? Why did Arizona invite NMSU? They want VISITORS!
We aren't the Sugar Bowl where it's important to sell every ticket at a high price. We need visitors to pay rental car fees, hotel fees, eat at our restaurants, and enjoy El Paso so they just MAY come back in the future to spend more outsiders money.
When you look at your direct impact statement, take into consideration that the teams, staff, etc are contributing to that number (if correct). Imagine if Bernie could actually get us teams from this region that just might travel here? Say like Tech? Texas? OU? OK State? yannowhatimean?
Naturally, you will argue, cuz like....that's whatcha do.....

Arizona would likely travel well but the west coast teams usually do not. They complain about having to go to El Paso, blah, blah, blah. I would rather the SB tied itself to the Big12 since fans of Iowa St, Ok St, Kansas St and Texas Tech travel well and most would be glad to leave their winters behind for a few days.
I would take it a step further: Southeastern Conference, especially the west:
'Bama
Auburn
LSU
MS State
TAMU
Ole Miss
Arkansas
P12 vs. either B12/ SEC
I agree. The day we exchange a P5 tie in with a G5 conference will be the start of its downfall. The crowds would most likely be slashed in half.A lot of those teams have played in the Sun Bowl.
The Sun Bowl will continue to thrive as long as they continue to pick teams from the Power 5 conferences.
What would make El Paso a more attractive destination?I would love to think that people want to come to the Sun Bowl but most don't. If you don't want cherry picked comments use the following search link below. All it searches for are the words El Paso and Sun Bowl on twitter nothing else. Read some tweet sand get back to us on what the majority think.
I love that El Pasoans go to the game in droves. Shows the hunger for quality college football.

A real casino would help. I know when Northwestern came to the Sun Bowl that some of the alumni I talked with wanted to visit a casino, and all we can offer them in Sunland Park, which doesn't offer table games. If the Tiguas were allowed to have their casino, maybe it would have resembled a real casino by now with table games.
Compare El Paso to San Antonio. Of course, San Antonio has Six Flags and Sea World theme parks; El Paso has Western Playland (and really, New Mexico does now). Can El Paso ever support a major theme park? We probably can't even have the conversation until the city population cracks a million. I mean, if the market were there, wouldn't there have been some challenge to Western Playland in the decades since Magic Landing?
El Paso did steal Lucchese from San Antonio, so there's that. (Really, boot shopping does seem to be the #1 draw of visiting bowl fans.)
San Antonio has the River Walk. El Paso nightlife cannot compare. Can El Paso improve here? What would it take? El Paso does have some great restaurants and bars, but they're scattered amongst the city sprawl; there's nothing like the River Walk experience. Maybe if we ever get that damned arena built downtown, businesses and nightlife will follow downtown.
At one time there was hope that the Twelve Travelers statues would draw tourists downtown and enhance the pedestrian experience. So El Paso just had to ruin that with their typical grandstanding on the Oñate statue. Instead of the centerpiece located downtown, it is relegated to the El Paso Airport as an anonymous conquistador. El Paso has to find ways to ruin things, even when the funds for a project are already available. Same story with the damned arena.
Juarez used to be a big draw for visitors to El Paso, but now everybody's afraid to go there, whether fairly or not, with the bad press and depiction in the movie Sicario.
El Paso does offer lots of outdoors activities for the adventure types (hiking, rock climbing, etc.). I'm guessing that's a small subset of potential bowl visitors.
As you implied, the Sun Bowl is different from most other mid-level bowls because the locals pack the stands. That is something special about the Sun Bowl, and for that reason alone I think the gameday experience surpasses most other mid-level bowls. I don't really care how many NCState fans make the trek as long as the locals find it an exciting matchup and pack the stands.
Thats an awesome idea! I'm not sure you could get the same feel though, but brainstorming it would be cool. I went to the market in Cancun (after trying to sift through all the bullshit vendors on the way) and I loved it. It brought me back to the market in Juarez of 20-25 years ago.I think a big “Mercado” should be built downtown that recreates the Juarez experience. Great Mexican food and drink, plus all the cheap, cheesy stuff tourists would like such as sombreros, serapes, leather goods, specialty foods, etc., etc.
Something like the Mercado Paisano downtown but bigger?I think a big “Mercado” should be built downtown that recreates the Juarez experience. Great Mexican food and drink, plus all the cheap, cheesy stuff tourists would like such as sombreros, serapes, leather goods, specialty foods, etc., etc.

Hmm. Well said. I like casinos but no alcohol in the New Mexico casinos is some kind of bad dream (especially for non smokers). No tables like in Sunland Park makes it even worse. What would make El Paso a more attractive destination?

I’ve always thought El Paso should create a touristic little Mexico. People from all over the USA can go to Mexico without actually stepping foot over there.Much bigger. You could enclose streets and air condition it for an authentic feel.

Thanks for proving more positive comments. Sure, there are some negative comments, but definitely not the majority and most NC State fans are complaining because of the distance.
"Sunday: “State is going to the sun bowl? I’m not going to El Paso, that’s too far, I’ll watch the game from my couch” Today: *buys a ticket*"
"It’s not the game they are mad at. It’s a great opportunity. It’s the fact that’s it’s like impossible to get to El Paso. When you can’t get there, it’s frustrating. Coming from a student who can’t pay like 400+$ to fly there."
"State heading to El Paso to play Arizona State in Hyundai Sun Bowl on Dec. 29. Only bowl game televised on CBS. Stinks for fans wanting to travel, but it isn't as awful as some claim. Sun is more solid slotting than it gets credit. And, State has never been to the Sun Bowl"
"not knocking the town, but flights to El Paso from RDU are generally much more than to Dallas or Houston. I would guess that there will be 90% fewer NCSU fans making trip as opposed to a FL bowl."
Interesting on southwest right now the cheapest flight for the game from Raleigh to El Paso is $210. From Raleigh to Dallas is $196. Such a backbreaking difference.
