Next UTEP coach is...

I don’t get the hate for Sadler. Not the sexiest hire, but Eastern Michigan just hired Stan Heath. I would take Doc over Stan anytime.
BecaUse he is plain mediocrity.... he is a great coach who can’t recruit playing a system that makes it even harder to recruit ....

Let's hear your name then. Which coach that wanted the job would have done a better job?
Maybe they were all losers Corona. Who knows? Seems like you are attacking my ideas lately. Have I offended you somehow? Are you a Terry/Senter supporter? Do you think Senter should have given Terry more than a one year extension to reward him for a job well done?
Regarding Terry, I think it was obvious ftom the get go that he was not the answer, but I must confess that I understand why he was Senter's
Pick.
Who is your choice this time?

Your ideas are to constantly bash Senter as if he picked the worse possible candidate he could find. On paper he picked what many believed was a strong hire. We were talking about Terry surpassing Billy's one year turn around. It looked like this was the answer to make us relevant again. Obviously it didn't work out.

This time around the interest in UTEP is much higher than when Stull/Floyd quit. Could it be the roster on hand or the new pay Senter provided?

It’s going to take a pretty penny to bring the Don up to standard... If it’s true, and they are going to dish out a big chunk of change, then Doc it is... If it’s just a refresh, and some paint and dusting, is it worth passing up on a solid hire? Doc could set the program back even further than it already is. And why? Just to get the band back together? Didn’t they learn from Floyd? Go with the damn winner! Golding, Jans, or Tang!

That explains why Sadler made the final cut. Tough decision for Senter. Make the fans happy or the money.

Gotta admit, I wondered how the heck Sadler made the final 5. If the rumor is true then that indeed explains it.

And let me be clear -- I am NOT hating on Sadler. Just found it odd that a *former* coach here would be in the final 5 for a second go-around.

Yeah, I was ALL IN on Tim Floyd. Until I saw the reality of Tim Floyd. Bringing back Doc is just lazy. I don't care what boosters want, screw that. Unless they are gonna pay salary, they can kiss off. A renovated arena is nice, but the product will be crap. Doc showed he can coach but he can't recruit worth a crap.

For Senter’s sake, a renovation job is just what he needs to sell Doc Wilson on why he needs to stay on as AD, no matter how Dimel does this season.

What would they do to the Haskins Center?

If its like what was done to The Pit in Albuquerque, that would be pretty incredible.

But I am not sure what impact arena/stadium improvement does for recruiting. Recruiting is the lifeblood of college athletics. Recruits want nice stuff for themsevles. Not sure if they care about Loge seating.

I think it did wonders for UH’s recruiting. Recruits may not care about Loge seating but they are aware when something is outdated and antiquated.

I think the Don, even as it is, is still nice, one of the top basketball arenas in the conference. It already has updated big screens and scoreboards from the Stull years. I suppose you could put in suites, but does the player or casual fan care about that? I guess you could install cup-holders in the seats? The Sun Bowl shows its age much more than the Don.

I agree 100%. All I want are individual seats at the Sun Bowl.

The Fertitta Center of AAC is night and day compared to the CUSA version. So is their overall basketball program.
Their arena was shit just before the renovations. Worse than the DHC...by far. We don’t need our updated version to be as nice as the Fertitta Center but we need to move towards it. My point was, updated facilities matter to recruits.

After re-reading your post, i think you’re agreeing with the point, so never mind. 😎

Hopefully the booster/DHC renovation thing is a dud. If not, maybe Sadler has only made it this far to humor said boosters.

While it would be disappointing to end up with him... maybe he's not as awful as we think...

Looking at his time with Southern Miss, the situation he inherited was as close as you get to the death penalty. Yet, he won more games every year culminating with a second place finish in conference in year four. You could say winning in those circumstances is comparable to Golding transitioning from D2 to D1.

Don't get me wrong... Sadler is nowhere close to being the same caliber hire that Golding or Jans/Tang would be... and our ceiling would be lower presumably... but he isn't trash. That being said, he should absolutely not be the guy.

If you’re taking a message board rumor as fact
UTEP has placed an inch steel lid on what goes out that just started prior to AD Stull departure.

However, for several days the media have leaked info that never occurred during Dimel and Terry hiring process.

Could be trial balloons.

Sometimes there's a method to what gets out and what doesn't.

It's always like that, or often is. We think a hire is a slam dunk, only to find out it wasn't, and vice-versa. I remember when IU hired Archie Miller. I thought they'd finally found their guy.

I will give Doc a chance (if he's the guy) but it just feels like that's the easy "safe" choice. And considering the fact we haven't done jack in basketball in a LONG TIME means this isn't the time for a safe choice. We need a home run choice.

Doc isn’t even the easy “safe” choice. The easy safe choice is Jans. The self destruct choice is Sadler.

Doc would be a safe choice for "Greatest Guy of the Year Award " or simply "Friendliest .500 % Coach of the Year Award", but not "Bring Us Out of the Ashes Award"
He truly is a great guy to hang with and down a few brewskies with.

Maybe the boosters are from Baylor or NMSU?? They pretending to be Utep donors but actually Baylor boosters so Utep doesn't hire Tang.

Nebraska just removed all recruiting duties from Doc and made him special asst. to Head Coach......and UTEP wants to make him head coach so he can recruit to UTEP.

If it’s Doc there needs to be protests. This is crazy. Only Senter could pick a candidate that the fan base is so against. A candidate who flew away as fast as he could when given the chance.

A candidate who left the cupboards empty for the next coach.

Sadler wouldn’t make my top 100 list of coaches probably. Just gross.
