Next UTEP coach is...

I feel that Tang is more likely to stay if successful. At his age, he's less likely to jump at the first offer from a big conference school. He'd finally be leading his own program, and might be happy to do that a few years rather than looking to move up at the first opportunity like a younger coach. Just my two cents. Again, Tang or Golding, I'm pleased as punch.
Senter putting Sadler in the top 5 has miner Fandom very nervous.

What if Tang wants more than UTEP will offer? He can stay put in Baylor and retire or wait. Sadler will be happy as punch with post covid UTEP salary. Will Golding hold out for better offer from a P5 or Gof5? Jans will make much more at UTEP and NMSU is on financial ropes. How does Senter see UTEP Basketball versus how fans see UTEP Basketball? Aim high and immediately challenge WKU, ODU & La Tech or go "Cecil Turtle" slow and aim for post season in year 4 or 5? Success at UTEP is very, very possible, heck look at UTEP football. Kugler had UTEP in a bowl in year two, Price year one, Stull, Nord. If Senter thinks it's a multi year process then he is undoubtedly not D1 AD material.

Brace yourselves for Jans or Sadler.

Patrick: Traveling Wilbury. Whoopee on fast turnarounds. Good for him.. He'll be at Kiki's Restaurant interviewing for a P5 gig by year two.

Tang: Pull the trigger Senter. UTEP fans want you to give him a chance.

Golding: The "Bo Pelini" scenario for UTEP. Stud asst. coach wanting a shot. Bo "allegedly" applied before Nord was hired. What is true is that the then up coming seniors led by "Mosh Pit" Merkins told Stull to hire Nord "or they walk". We'll never know scenario if not hired. Golding WILL succeed wherever he goes, or stays.

Jans: Safest hire of the bunch because UTEP fans know Jans as a winner and pretty good recruiter.

Can we think bigger? We haven't seen him hire a football coach. He extended one of the worst coaches in America. His two basketball hires have been unfaithful. His first one booked after a year and his second one tried leaving after 2 and is still trying to leave. Let's not even talk about their spring football season.

Been a LONG TIME since I've posted here. The state of UTEP athletics in the last decade has been... Well you know. I'm hoping this hire can get me excited again. With that said, here's my take (for what it's worth).

With the quality of the candidates available, it seems like a slam dunk, or as much of a slam dunk as these things can be.
-Sadler-pass. Hard pass. Not happy with the fact he up and left in August. That is something I would have forgiven if he was taking a job at Kentucky, IU, etc... But Nebraska? Sure, the money was more than UTEP could pay, but Nebraska basketball is... you know.
-Barbee-liked him his first time here, but REALLY hated how he left. Sorry hard pass.
-Jerome Tang-PICK!!! To me this guy needs to be top 3. I know the criticism is that he's spent way too long as an assistant. After the lack of loyalty displayed by TB and Doc, I am all about a guy who isn't looking to jump ship at the first chance. Plus he is known for recruiting, something the new coach will need big time.
-Joe Golding-PICK!!! Between him and Tang, I don't think you could go wrong. And I'm not basing this on his victory against UT. The dude has shown he can coach up recruits. He has show he can build, and let's face it, we need someone who can build. It's been 3 decades since UTEP basketball was on the map for more than a season or so. We need a builder. If I'm honest, this is the guy I'd hire.
-Chris Jans-This one intrigues me. We know he can recruit to the area. He has shown he can coach and I like the idea of weakening NMSU. If I couldn't get Golding or Tang then I'd be all in for Jans.

The option of Jans doesn't seem as bad as I initially thought (once you take out the fact that he is the NMSU coach). With the 5 options I am in the Tang and the Golding boat too. Golding will leave as soon as he wins and I think Tang will recruit better. We will see!

Oh and if Sadler gets the job expect a backlash from the EP community.

I was rooting for Barbee to get the job, but...

(A) He's reportedly not a finalist for the job

(B) Why do you think he would win immediately? It took him four years to get to the NCAAs his first time with us.

That's a great post sir. I agree 100%. I think it was a 2Step post about what does OFF-SENTER think of UTEP basketball?. I really think that a real factor in his ineptness is his inability to identify what Miner history truly is. He isn't anything but alien; an outsider with no clue.

Honest question. Who was Senter supposed to hire last time? Forbes turned the job down. Dooley has finished in last place the last 3 years in the AAC. Harper is still at Jacksonville St and hasn't made an NCAA since interviewed here. Same for Rahe at Weber St. Ogden has a similar record to Terry at Arlington. Foster still hasn't received a HC offer.

Out of those candidates don't you think Senter hired the best available one?

I just got a call with that rumor from someone very very close to the program.

I heard a rumor today that the top two boosters are telling Senter to hire Doc and in return, they will renovate the Haskins center. Let's see how this plays out.
Why would the top 2 boosters want Doc, when they should know that the Miner Fans don't want that 🤔

How do we win now with Barbee but nobody else? Does he have a bunch of Kentucky players ready to follow him?

I wish DR. Nat was still president or at least someone who cares or know Utep Basketball History and how the fans crave another winner. I don't think she cares about sports at all and will leave it up to Senter and base it purely on, a former HC who can graduate student athletes and be consistently mediocre with the off chance at making an NCAA run every 10 years or so. If so then Sadler is your man. Enjoy the Haskins Renovation with no fans in it Senter!

I don’t get the hate for Sadler. Not the sexiest hire, but Eastern Michigan just hired Stan Heath. I would take Doc over Stan anytime.
