Next UTEP coach is...

Please. Butler wiped the floor with us. They struggled against Murray St. Even if we had beat those two. No way we beat Syracuse in the Sweet 16. But here we are again playing the what if game.
Barbee did in fact establish and leave some memories. At the top my list however is how he and his wife at least appeared to snub their noses at El Paso. His departure was very abrubt and ill mannered. I remember thinking, what an arrogant ungrateful jerk when he left. Wish I had a better recollection of how it all went down.

I had to quit reading there. I liked the 2010 team A LOT. But you are on crack if you believe what you wrote.
It was a top 5 to 10 IMO. He did built a top 25 in that time span, Sadler took the keys to the liquor cabinet but unlike Sadler, Barbee left Floyd top shelf liquor.

That 2010 team was very good, but I would have taken the 2006 team any day of the week. That team didn’t fold in the 2nd half of their tourney game and you could argue they got some bad calls down the stretch plus that game vs Rutgers was the absolute baddest beat down I’ve seen. I’m sure some of the older guys on this board would say one of those 80s teams as well. Plus it’s hard to dismiss the 92 team because they’re the only ones who actually made a Sweet 16.
I really liked some of the 80s team. That 92 team was a couple points from being a Final 4 team. Cincinnati cruised by Memphis State. Probably beat them by 25-30. We would have done the same. I also think we would have given the Fab5 a better game than Cinci did. We matched up better. Who knows what could have happened?

The 2010 team was good. They swept UAB. Other than that who else did they beat. Memphis was down that year. We got spanked at home by BYU. Lost at TT and Ole Miss who didn't even make the tournament. Here's the real kicker for those saying we got a bad draw with Butler. How about we don't lose twice to a .500 UH team? That would have improved our seeding and we could see what they really would have done in the tournament instead of blaming it on bad luck.

Great points.

Yo! I think it was Tuesday’s show, but Kappy said something was going on within the “inside” that made Barbee standoffish. Whatever cryptic message that means.

Barbee is also a top recruiter at Kentucky, responsible for bringing in some good players. UTEP may not get the same kind, but even UK leftovers are going to be decent. Barbee, bought us tickets at one point to watch them play at NMSU. When I was a student at UTEP. Do you all remember the excitement, being on the hardwood with the team, when they won CUSA? That was fun and electric! Barbee may use UTEP as a stepping stone again, but he is also older. He will be more selective. If Golding isn’t the man, Barbee needs to be the man.

Or, Senter fvcks it up and hires some JAG.

Rhymes with Toc Hadler
I really liked Doc at the time... but his recruiting was average at best and he hasn't done anything exciting since then.

With Golding showing interest, Barbee available, guys like Tang and Keller out there... Senter would have to be a world class bum to settle on Sadler.

Fordham passed on Barbee. Fordham!
So are you saying that you don't want Barbee?

Nope. I could understand if he had done anything after UTEP. At least Sadler won 150+ games after leaving UTEP and made a few NIT's at Nebraska. He took over a usm program with reduced scholarships and under investigation. Still managed to turn them around and finish 2nd in CUSA. Barbee has been rejected from every HC position he has applied to. Imo he hasn't done anything to earn it. Sorry he left at the first job that came calling but it's not our obligation to give him another shot as a HC, again. Value what you have next time.

I have always been a fan of Barbee and the great job he did here as HC. My issue with him is that nobody has hired him as a HC since he left Auburn. And if you look on UK’s website, Barbee is listed in the support staff section, not with Calipari and his assistant coaches. The signs are there to pass on him.

Question for the informed out there. Is Golding considered a "Good"
recruiter?

Woke up and had a text about a new name. Darian DeVries HC at Drake. Not sure how much interest on both sides, but interesting name indeed. I would not be mad at this surprising choice at all.

I’d add one more thing. The disparity between most 2-3 star kids is minimal. More crucial once a kid enters college, is not the amount of stars next to his name but rather how well developed he is, how well coached he is.

Put in perspective, with their no star guys, Abilene Christian would have mopped the floor with our roster full of former 3 star kids.

I think he will have a good sense of the kind of guys he can get to utep, then develop the hell out of them. That’s just my take on him.

Exactly what I wanted to say. Williams could have played at a Power school. Kennedy is a former four star recruit from the Big East. Bieniemy another former 4 star recruit from the Big 12. If Golding had those type of recruits do we really believe he would have finished next to last in the west division?

I agree that a solid coach would likely not have finished next to last in the division, but at the same time, I don't think there was near enough talent to compete for a championship. Stars earned in high school are mostly based on potential, and in many cases, not lived up to. That's part of the reason for so many transfers. At the D1 level, in my opinion, much of the player development falls on the athlete themselves. It is important to recruit guys that have the inherent mentality to improve. One thing is certain, the next guy has to do better than Terry in multiple areas if we want to compete at a higher level.

Hmm. I wonder what kind of team he inherited at Drake. Did that skew his numbers a little or a lot?

Sounds like he inherited a tough situation. From his Wiki:

"DeVries became a head coach for the first time when he accepted the job at former conference rival Drake in March 2018.[2]

DeVries' steady hand at the helm of the Bulldogs helped the program start the season with 9-2 record, the program's best open to a season since 2007-08. The Bulldogs win over Valparaiso Feb. 16 was the team's 20th win of the season to mark the sixth 20-win season in program history. This accomplishment came after inheriting the second-fewest returning letterwinners in the nation thanks to Niko Medved gutting the program before moving on after one season with a senior-laden roster he inherited."

Long time assistant under Dana Altman and Dougie Bucket’s pops, I think he might have the best resume that fits what we need. Starting to warm up to this name.

Got a rare at large bid this year in a mid major, no easy feat. Then won play in game, before losing to a tough USC squad. Looks pretty solid the three years he's been there and built up to a great year this year. I don't mind if Senter went this direction, because Texas ties aren't as important as they used to be with the Transfer situation the way it is now. Again not sure if there's going to be an interview, just a name that was passed to me that Utep inquired about.

Just saw DeVries signed a long extension at the school, not sure the buy out details or if Utep can afford to get him out of that contract.
