Man, it's a heart stopper but if I was ever on death row, I think this would be my last meal. Buck Owens was never on death row but it literally turned out to be his last meal. RIP Buck, you went out the right way!

Anyone try the fireman's special chicken fried steak from Lulu's in San Antonio? Makes that plate look small. I used to split it with my son, and still have leftovers. And trust me, I can eat.

Why doesn't El Paso do good BBQ?
It ain't easy or cheap to produce. It's a long process to produce good BBQ. It's an investment in time as well as money. We don't have the right kind of wood available cheaply eg. mesquite, apple, hickory. We're a steak and Tex-mex city.

El Paso does fall in the mesquite footprint... honey mesquite (prosopis glandulosa). I guess they're even more plentiful in other parts of the state? But how expensive are mesquite chips, especially if you buy in bulk? Yeah, it takes time and money, but that's true whatever city it's made in. It's not a handicap unique to El Paso.

Much of great BBQ was innovated by African-Americans and many of the places with great BBQ have a cultural heritage going back generations, passing down the secrets. I'm guessing that El Paso doesn't have this as part of their tradition. But I'm still surprised that someone hasn't moved to El Paso, given all the people who have been stationed at Ft. Bliss over the years, and started up a great BBQ place using their family recipes.

Desert Oak is pretty good but they are pricey, plus small on the portions. I stick with Rudy's when it comes to BBQ around these parts.

I will definitely check out Desert Oak BBQ. A Dickeys BBQ just opened at the food court in Sunland Park Mall and I thought it was very good. I know it's a chain restaurant but it was good.

No, no, no...Not Tex-Mex in El Paso; what an insult. Disappointed in you jdubb!

Desert Oak has limited hours, so Google it first.

Smokey's Pit BBQ has always been a good place for Texas BBQ in El Paso.

We have had BBQ in EP that was pretty good. Some of you would remember Bill Parks and Chris' the Brisket. I haven't been to Mo'z in a minute but I might go this weekend.
