I have heard some saying to hire Greg Foster and for him to bring his son to play here. A few problems with that.

1. The was a priority recruit for Gonzaga. Who would want to leave Gonzaga to come and play for a rebuilding UTEP team? Foster jr. is the perfect fit for the Zags.

2. Lets say we do hire Foster and his son wants to come play for dad, then Gonzaga will have to let him out of his LOI which he has already signed. Considering it is late in the recruiting season, I don't see them doing that (i.e. Isaac Hamilton) which means he sits out a year.

What about Jason Hooten from Sam Houston State? Since 2010, he has only one losing season and has done much with very little at SHSU. Overall record since he became HC: 127-59.

I f Senter is smart (which I think he is) he knows he has till the end of the season to get this hire done. Cooler heads will prevail and he’s not under the gun to get this hire done a la football. It sounds like we will have no shortage of candidates. In 24 hours we’ve already heard Cantu, Foster thrown out there. I can’t wait to see who else expresses interest in the job.

Get some coffee and cigs. It will March before we hear anything and for obvious reasons. The season just started and while many will apply, if they are active within a college program, they have to keep their mouth shut for recruiting and other reasons and let the season play out.

Case in point. When Self was at Illinois, Billy Clyde was his assistant. Self told him to apply for UTEP job. He got the job but was kept on the down low for a while.

How about a big time recruiter from a bigtime program that wants to be a head coach. It worked before with Barbee. Examples would be Norm Roberts from Kansas or even Jeff Capel from Duke. Both of these guys were successful as head coaches before and have been assistants for years at big time programs.

Self has sent 2 successful coaches through the WAC/CUSA. Why not one more?

Getting a top college assistant coach from a big time program has worked well. If we pay $600k like we paid Floyd, we are going to attract some pretty good assistants.

Its a little different when your father will be the new head coach of the school you transfer to and the school you leave is recruiting studs left and right, but I do agree to an extent.

Cantu ain't bad, apparently he's texting every media member in EP saying he really really really really wants the job. He's not a true Floyd disciple, Floyd kept him around at USC because the vato can recruit like a mf, and I can say for a fact he left for Portland because of Floyd's stubborn old school ways and the way Floyd changed his recruiting areas with Chicago and midwest now, Floyd was staying away from California it appeared and didn't need Bob anymore. He's hungry, he will give us a modern player friendly culture we desperately need..

But Crean or Cross would be my top two wants.

Johnson seems like a good assistant coach who can make adjustments and game plan, and recruited Omega, but that's it in my opinion.

Wouldn't be okay AT ALL if our next basketball coach has a career record of 31-83? He should finish the year but its time to move on from a mini-Floyd imo with all due respect Mr. Purp.

I feel so lucky that we have so many experts on this board that have such in depth knowledge about the qualifications of so many candidates. Amazing!

So many people say we should hire him, or him but these people need to be interested in the position. You all throw out names like we are duke. As discussed in earlier threads can’t pay major dollars to both coaches.
Cantu and Foster are both interested and have backgrounds that reach further than El Paso.

I really like this guy. Somebody mentioned somewhere this would be a pipe dream and rattled off about UTA having 40 plus thousand students etc.. with 10,000 within a short radius of the campus.

Well, these stats would lead me to believe that means nothing. There new facility opened 5 yrs. ago with a a capacity of 7,000. It has yet to sell out. Largest crowd was in 2012 against Oklahoma at around 6,600. Last yr. the largest crowd was in the 5,500 range for a NIT game.

For the guy who said he would never leave this place I would argue against it. If he could bring a winning program here and win 27 games like last year he sure as hell would draw more than 5,500!! All that UTA enrollment does not mean crap.

Signed new contract for 250,000 last March.

We could afford him and I really think it would be a possibility.

I live in Knoxville,TN and know Coach Forbes from his days as an Asst. at TN. I have followed him since. According to the JC Press, Forbes now makes over $400,000 a year and just got an extension. His salary is broken into base salary, a yearly retention bonus, and incentives. He's had some schools talk to him over the past couple of years, including New Mexico. I hope this helps. WE need to hire a football coach as well!!!!

He's not a true Floyd disciple, Floyd kept him around at USC because the vato can recruit like a mf, and I can say for a fact he left for Portland because of Floyd's stubborn old school ways and the way Floyd changed his recruiting areas with Chicago and midwest now, Floyd was staying away from California it appeared and didn't need Bob anymore. He's hungry, he will give us a modern player friendly culture we desperately need..
