Same crap, different year

I also think KU's team is better this year as well. The harsh reality is that the game last night was essentially over ten minutes into the first half. The excuse of not having Bieniemy doesn't really apply since he played the first ten minutes of the game. We were just badly outclassed. Let's see how they respond against UNM. Not having Bieniemy for that one would definitely be a factor, with UNM's two good guards.
I know we we played them close last year. If the game was a regularly scheduled one, I think we would have seen largely the same result. The circumstances around the scheduling made it just about the trappiest of trap game you could possibly have. Given that I don't think Kansas lost many players probably mean they weren't going to look past us.

They may have put their subs in there and taken it easy on us. But, seeing a couple of players who were out there in garbage time, those subs would start for us. Jalen Coleman-Lands has been about a six year starter in the Big 10, Big East, and Big 12 and Joseph Yesufu who led Drake to the Tournment last year. They weren't throwing Merle Heimer and Tyler Tafoya out there. Such is the luxury of being Kansas.

Relax.

My big problem with this team is its lack of discipline on offense. Guys are playing with great hustle on defense. They play with hustle on offense too, just not in a good way.

These kids are continually going the length of the court full speed, and completely out of control. ..

Air Force is a regular on here and at Kyotte's. I don't know him but I am willing to bet he was letting off steam.

This site has gone plum loco. We attack each other with rapier's delight and the respected one's protect idiots like NoWins. Dimel football and a rebuilding UTEP basketball team are frustrating to watch but don't throw out the baby with the bath water!
It’s incredibly frustrating to read this forum at times for that reason. I’m not a huge Dimel fan, but the amount of people calling for his head or for him to not be extended is concerning. It’s absurd asking to not extend a UTEP coach who went from 1 to 3 to 7 wins the past three years; almost as if they don’t remember going 0-12 a few years ago. Golding is off to a rough start, but we knew the roster wasn’t good enough to compete and CJG hasn’t even had a full year to recruit or implement his game plans. Football is on an obvious upswing and Mbasketball seems like it has its first competent coach since Floyd’s NIT years.

I just don’t get it.

Yeah, I probably shouldn’t post when I’ve had a couple drinks and some night time cold medicine...

On the other hand, I’d have likely posted some emotionally euphoric nonsense, had we won.

what could have been…

Yo tambien.

This is correct. BG wasn't hired until after practice had already started - the first couple of practices were run by Rab's assistants until a coach (BG) was hired. He managed to get Gehrke as a mid year transfer, but all other players on that team, including the ones mentioned above, were already here when BG arrived.
We need Gehrke's shooting!
No way these guys win fewer than 10 games this season. There's enough talent and hustle to get at least to 10.
NMSU best UNM at the Buzzer in the Pit! They're getting by, by the skin of their teeth. Jamal Mashburns boy plays for the lobos and is pretty good. If we have Bienemy playing it should at least be a close game, but it'll be tough! I'll stick to my .500 prediction for the year.

What a piss poor display by this bball team, but I guess that’s par for the course. Same results every year.

And don’t be fooled…. our football team will get embarrassed on National tv by a backup qb and coach. The score won’t even be close. You heard it here first….
I think you should be patient. Billy Gillispie only won six games in his first year and look what happened the next year. I'm not saying that this is exactly what's gonna happen but give Golding it at least three years. Even though I wont deny Gillispie was my favorite choice for Utep, and it's because he already proved he could turn this thing around.

Gillispie didn’t have 6 or 7 of his own players during his 1st season.

Other schools don’t reward people for winning 7 games, 6 of which were against some of the worst in the country. That’s the best result after 4 seasons. UTEP lost to any decent team they faced. Whether we were the worst team in the history of football prior to his hiring, doesn’t that we should be satisfied or happy with the most mediocre of results.

Well I always insisted Gillispie should have been the one but most people here disagree. Everybody was very happy with Golding now you'll live with it.
We had the chance to hire him when we hired Floyd. I wouldn’t have minded his hire, but I thought we could do better. Time will tell

Provided he’d had a full recruiting cycle, Golding wouldn’t have signed the same 6 or 7 of “his own players” that he did. So, in a sense, it’s kinda like he doesn’t have his own players.
Doesn’t seem like it’s a problem for Chris Beard or some other first year coaches.

Yeah, let’s not compare Golding who was at Abilene Christian U to Chris Beard who was at Texas Tech just yet.

Aren’t you on record as saying you gave Golding a pass for this year? Kinda remember that.

Not “comparing”, but he has expectations that are much larger than Golding. He has a standard to adhere to. Apparently, on a smaller level, it’s “unrealistic” to expect Golding to recruit his “own players” in year 1.

Yes, he does it a “pass”. That doesn’t mean I accept excuses and letting KK continuously brick 3s. I’m not “proud” to just have a D1 team, like it seems many of you are.

It's weird that a coach that recently played for a national championship isn't having difficulties luring recruits to a team playing in a brand new state of the art arena. Golding really needs to step up his game. If Beard can do it no reason why Golding or for that matter any coach at ACU or SFA can't do it.

Completely agree with the bold statement. But I addressed your comment about recruiting, not Xs and Os.

As to the point just after the bold statement, maybe don’t speak for me about being “proud”. I’ve voiced my discontent with frequency. I can assure you, without any doubt in my mind, I want to win as much or more than you do. Without a doubt.

You don’t see the point. I do not expect Golding to be a Top 25 team or contend for the conference. And whether or not, Beard has an “easier time” getting recruits, they are still new and he had maybe a week or two more than Golding did. To say Golding didn’t get to have “his own class” is incorrect.

I bet late replacements like Gillispie would have killed to have the recruiting opportunity that Golding had.

As I just replied to Corona, not expecting him to pull studs and be a winner, but he had enough time to put together a solid roster. I think that’s a weak excuse of him not getting “his own recruits”. Beard and Texas still have to compete with the Dukes and Kansas’ of the world for players.

Really? So you honestly think starting recruiting in say September-October, where there is a year long recruiting cycle has no advantage over starting in April when there is a few months before season’s start? Got it.

I wouldn’t mind having a friendly wager comparing production from his first and second classes. We don’t really lose anyone, so it’d pretty much be apples to apples.

Beard was able to bring some key players with him from TT. I don't know if any of the ACU players would even start at UTEP.

Why is Barbee getting blown out worse than we did against Kansas to his schedule. You figure if recruiting was that easy he would have brought in players that could compete and make them respectable immediately.

Anyway I still haven't seen a result that says this team will be any worse or better than what we all expected his first year.

Maybe, maybe not. What if you’re hot to trot on several high schools guys and they get stolen at the last minute? I don’t know how you could say our Georgetown transfer is worse off than some high school guy would be?

What is “production” that you’re wanting to bet on?

Fair points. Defining production is difficult but we’d have to use stats, which are a pretty good indicator anyway. Points, rebounds, shooting percentage, etc.

As far as Sibley goes, he was a good get. Very last minute, very lucky get.

We need 2 or 3 studs to come in next year to add to Boum and we're fine. I'm not too worried about this year. If we do well then Awesome, if we don't, I kinda expected it.

Golding could have recruited better despite his limited time. He targeted a bunch of guys for PF that didn't pan out. Whether it would have made a difference or not we won't know, but I think yes. I will give him a full cycle/season to show us something.

I think we all agreed that when hired at UTEP he was better coach than recruiter at this point (based on what he did at ACU). Hopefully we can see both pretty soon. So far there is not much there aside from motivation and enthusiasm, but I am being patient.

Not sure Boum will stay if we do bad this season. Not sure a lot of guys stay.

He’s not there any more. Transferred closer to home when Golding was up for the utep job, but Joe Pleasant would have started for us…and been our best big…by far.

Not sure about all the hate and dissatisfaction towards Golding. (except nonuts) We aren't UCLA who can pick up blue chip athletes at the drop of a hat after sucking for so many years. Golding was grabbing scraps to fill a depleted roster. I'm far from happy right now, but cheese n rice, calm the hell down....
Hey nowins, how many impact players did texas get last minute? I will guess not too many but hey, they started the season ranked. Guess their cupboard wasn't TOO bare, huh? Ours was.....

Good to see you posting again. I appreciate the shots. Hopefully the guy the keeps wanting to bet everyone uses that money to instead pay you back.

Just read that Bienemey is out for the UNM game. Talk about this team learning how to play through adversity.
We didn't look too good without Boum let's see how we do without the floor general. Really wish we could've gotten that NMSU game. Looks like a 3 game losing streak is pretty Inevitable. Have to make it up with a 3 game winning streak before conference play!
