If last year's offense actually put drives together and didn't have so many 3 and outs the defense would have been ranked much higher. I actually thought the defense was relatively respectable last year so this isn't surprising to me. Too bad the offense didn't help them out

That’s a misleading stat. Baker Mayfield only threw for 329 yards and 3 tds against the Miners, but threw for 386 and 3 the next week on the road vs Ohio St. Who has a better defense, UTEP or Ohio St?
