UTEP Basketball Recruiting

If successful recruiting were like drinking fresh water from a waterfall, this is UTEP.

Another bites the dust.
UTEP should go recruit some of the kids downtown?? Maybe some of them can play Basketball?

From an inside well-placed source, Senter instructed Golding to not generate much buzz for the upcoming season and lay low. The only announcements from UTEP would be regarding upcoming Summer camps, no signing of players from the portal. Golding is just doing what his boss told him to do, apparently UTEP's budget for next year is solid so no need to increase season tickets sales by bringing in a point guard or players that would excite the community.

Also was told Senter forgot to mention this to Keitha Adams so she went out and started recruiting like crazy, generating excitement for the team, apparently the top brass are not too happy about this.

The goal is to try to get an invitation to the Southland Conference, so the goal for teams is to try and finish at .500 or less and get eliminated in the first round of the conference tournament.

Kaplowitz mentioned yesterday that he heard Onyema would be getting around $250K from Texas. Also, UTEP's Basketball NIL Collective has only about $300K in total available for the program. Obviously, pretty tough to compete against that.

I agree with what Kappy said about UTEP essentially being a G5 JC now. UTEP Football is also probably one of the few G5 programs without a NIL of any kind. Again, it is hard not to question the leadership. Yes, I realize UTEP can not have direct connections to the establishment of the NILs, but donor/booster engagement with the few that are left is definitely a Senter responsibility. When he was hired, that was supposedly his main strength. Even with NILs in place, it would be tough winning at UTEP, but even more so without. Sad reality.

Golding couldn’t get a Z type of player when they were free. Now that type of player is worth our entire NIL budget, I don’t see it happening ever again.
We are the broke ass mfers. Maybe we've let down the University. Perhaps if we'd made something of ourselves we could help out. Hell, some of us won't go to the games unless tickets are $10 bucks.

Yes, but UTEP will never be able to compete with Texas since tv contracts have put them into a different class.

What about NMSU? Sam Houston? Northern Arizona? LaTech? What do their NIL budgets look like?

Goes hand in hand. Why should UTEP fans pay more for an inferior product and results? You could buy $8 tickets to see Washington St during Floyd’s last (half) season. Last year (2021-22) those same tickets were $18.

What did UTEP accomplish during those 5 years of competition? Not a damn thing. Only the coaches changed. That and the non-conference opponents and conference opponents got worse.

This year (2022-23), some of those tickets went down to $9.15, which is very fair. However, a lot of people didn’t appreciate the gouge, and losing doesn’t help get fans to the games.

UTEP’s worst enemy isn’t NMSU or BYU, it’s themselves.

Yep the free year transfer portal and the NIL (on top of our shitty AD, higher prices, poor city/school/fans) have ruined UTEP FB and BB. The only way to combat it is to raise more money AND get name coaches who can recruit quickly and win. Otherwise we are stuck in a rut just spinning our wheels.

I can’t imagine a coach thinking UTEP could be even a small stepping stone at this point, like it was for CBG, Doc and Barbee. Unless something drastically changes within the UTEP “culture”, and I won’t pretend to know what all those changes would be, I don’t think we’ll be getting a name coach any time soon.:(

I kind of respectfully disagree axe. Dimel plays within the hedges with JUCO. It’s like Las Vegas: Admit it, most of us don’t belong at a gambling table playing the house but where do want to hedge our money? Vegas. It’s the “I’ll give you an opportunity to win my money” ultimate American getaway.

JUCO’s are full of ballers itching for a FBS spot. Dimel gets good JUCO players who got bypassed, overlooked or failed to qualify. His coaching is hair pulling; big difference. He’s basically Nord 2.0.

I would definitely say recruiting for the football program hasn't been the issue. There is a reason last season was so disappointing. The talent level was there, which Dimel deserves credit for.

Deep. That’s difference between us and the conference members that left us.

In the grand scheme of things an extra $5-7 for a game ticket doesn’t make much of a dent in the athletic financial budget.

We’re missing the big ballers. We don’t have enough wealthy families that want to contribute large money towards UTEP athletics. Or maybe we do and Stull/Senter haven’t been able to make them go in.

There are schools that have had success without much money but I think those schools are gonna struggle under this new system.

You’re half right. As long as UTEP continues to overpay for men’s basketball coaches, there will be better names than at most schools.

Bronzeing and Terry’s “successes” will deter some candidates, but there will be others looking to move up a level and take it.

I don’t think Terry and Bronzeing were name coaches though.

If you go back one more coach, Floyd was definitely viewed as a name coach at the time he was hired at UTEP. It is kind of ironic that he was blackballed for doing the exact same thing (pay for play) that is legal today. If you look at a guy like Sean Miller, who came under federal scrutiny while at Arizona, but is now thriving again at Xavier; you see how much has changed. In fact, Miller has made it a point to pluck off CUSA guys to build his team via strong NIL payoffs. Who needs to recruit the Florida JC conferences when you can get proven D1 guys out of CUSA? These schools have become feeder schools to P5. Similar to football, Golding needs to really emphasize recruiting JC guys.
