What has UTEP Athletics accomplished? Absolutely Nothing.

When was the last time UTEP won a bowl game?

When was the last time UTEP won an NCAA tournament game?

How do you define success? It seems like UTEP is a below average athletics program whose claim to fame is a National Championship from 50 years ago. Nothing wrong with being proud of the 1966 title, but enough is enough, can we at least shoot for a conference title? Is asking for consistent NCAA appearances with a couple of wins, too much to ask for? Can we get a top 25 ranking at least once in a blue moon? Let's keep in mind we play in CUSA, AKA Sun Belt USA, we aren't asking for much when you factor the dump of a conference we play in. Enough with the mediocrity, time to make some changes.

OOC Schedule

Before someone complains about the fact that the Men's Basketball schedule has been out for a while now, and that the statute of limitations has passed for complaining about it, let me offer my mea culpa. Still, having the bad taste of posting an OPT for a Div III team fresh in my mouth, I wanted to complain about our abysmal OOC schedule, especially the home portion of said schedule. We play a total of three attractive teams OOC: Texas, DePaul, and NMSU. The last of these we play at least twice, possibly three times, and does anyone else think that the possible third game is overkill? Other than the Aggies once (and possibly twice) at home, we don't have any attractive OOC home games. Sul Ross St? Alcorn St? A&M Corpus Christi? CS Bakersfield? NC A&T? What Miner fan circled any of these dates on their calendar?

I get that you can't schedule too many P5 teams, both because of the likelihood that we lose to them, and the fact that they will want a home game rather than coming to the Don. But we played UNM in the Pit last year. Why aren't they playing in the DHC this year? Why can't we schedule some home and homes with some other MWC teams? Or AAC teams? Or other decent G5 teams? And why have anyone that is not Div I on our schedule?

The schedule as is will only bring out the die hards. We need to grow new fans, and to do that we need to do two things:
1. Bring in some attractive teams for the fans to watch, and
2. Beat them.

As I'm addicted to Miner athletics I'll still watch these games, like many of us, but we're the exception. And it's more fun watdhing the games when we play against a quality opponent.

Lack of optimism for UTEP Football?

Full disclosure. I am a North Texas grad and a big fan, but I have lived in El Paso for quite a while, and all of my children have either graduated from or are attending UTEP. I cheer for the Miners, except when they play the Mean Green.

No matter how bad things seem, I don't recall a time when the fanbase was less optimistic. Is the general feeling that Dimmel has maxed out what he can do? From the outside looking in, it does not seem UTEP is making the moves necessary from the athletic director level to turn things around.

2025 bold prediction for UTEP

I'm probably a tad off and things keep ever changing in College Athletics, but here's a prediction of where UTEP lands in 2025.

2022 Football Bowl Win avg 30,000+ attendance
2023-2024 season Golding takes UTEP Basketball back to the Dance

2025 New Conference for UTEP

MWC New 12 Team Football/10 Team Basketball League after SDSU, Fresno St, Colorado St. and Boise St. move to greener pastures.

UNM
NMSU
Utep
La Tech
Wyoming
Air Force
San Jose St.
Nevada
UNLV
Utah St.
Hawaii (Football Only)
***N. Dakota St *** (Football Only)
*** FCS Expansion Team
All things considered, it'd probably be right behind AAC as far as Football and a possible 2 bid league in Basketball. This is obviously a bit of a reach, but maybe not as much of a reach as it once was.

Will UTEP Even Be the Next FAU?

This tournament has been fun because of all the upsets and all the No. 1 seeds getting beat. I remember when UTEP beat FAU on a regular basis and now UTEP has fallen so far behind and FAU is going to the Final Four.

I don't know if it will ever be done, but I feel UTEP has to put all their resources into basketball because it's easier to succeed in basketball vs. football. I feel that UTEP can go back to going to the NCAA Tournament on a regular basis, but there has to be the right culture and the right coach to get it done.

No Spring Game?

Schedule: Every Monday (9:15 a.m.-11:15 a.m.), Wednesday and Friday (9 a.m. to 11 a.m.). No practice during spring break (March 13-17) and the final practice is Thursday, April 6. There will be no spring game or promoted last practice showcase.

St. Francis Brooklyn cuts all college athletics

With NIL, transfer portal, and legislation throughout the country that will ultimately force colleges and universities to pay its athletes, this could be the beginning of a purge. Maybe it won’t happen to UTEP for years to come.

UTEP Men’s NCAA Tourney Appearances

I must admit I never thought UTEP’s Men’s Basketball would be this irrelevant. We are heading back to a time similar to before the Don Haskins era. This plus the new environment in college sports has really made me somewhat apathetic towards the men’s UTEP FB and BB programs. Something needs to change to bring back my excitement. Not sure what that is; however, I know the status quo is not working.

——

Between 1963 and 1992 - 14 appearances (in the Tourney almost 50% of the time)

Between 1993 and 2022 - 3 appearances (10%)

13 years since last appearance

2nd year coaches

Pat Kelsey lead the College of Charleston to a 31-3 record, Tournament champions, co-CAA regular season champions, and was ranked in the Top 25 in his second year. Going to the big dance now.

Tim Miles is 19-12 at San Jose St. They went 10-8 in the MWC and finished in 5th place, above UNM and UNLV. Largest crowd of the season was 3,371. SJSU was 1-17 last year in the MWC.

Why are we okay with Bronzeing’s results? There’s no excuse for SJSU to have more success than UTEP in basketball. There should be more people upset with his performance as our coach. We’re in recruiting battles with D2 schools and the bottom of D1.
