Won at NMSU - they have only beat FCS
Won vs BCU - currently 0-5 FCS team
Won vs UNM - they only beat NMSU and FCS
Won vs ODU - they have only beat FCS

Loss by 41 to 2-3 Boise St who just lost to Nevada at home and play Top 15 BYU this weekend.

3 home wins by small margins and a road win that is 45 minutes away. Is this team good?

By UTEP standards over the last 5 or 6 years yes. Not great but good enough to win vs the schedule presented to them. Dimel has built a better product but there is more to do. Winning seasons and bowl games will help attract better recruits. Fans in the stands would help in recruiting too but we don't seem to have many of those anymore.

Utep has to find a way to get those 5 to 12 yard passes. If they can do that the rest of the offense will prosper. That’s mainly on Hardison.

4-1 is what it is. Wins for Miner football are wins, end of story. Don't care if they come from beating Ross Middle School or Alabama. Don't care about comparative scores, game attendance, game promotions or how orange or red the uniforms are. Don't care who sits next to me at a game or how cold the beer is, parking or tailgate rules. Only relevant stat for UTEP football is 4 wins and 1 loss.

It's been 5 years since we won 4 games and we still have 7 or 8 or maybe 9 games left. We're back to what we use to be, a 3 - 5 win team. To be good we have to win at least 3 more games.

The Miners are now merely bad and not terrible, as we have been the past several seasons. The team is proving it can win against the terrible teams. But the test will be to beat a team that doesn't make the bottom ten list. If that happens, the attendance will probably improve. If not, it probably won't. But it is good to tell co-workers we won more than twice in a season. Go Miners.

If they beat USM, UNT, and Rice and are uncompetitive in the other games, a .500 conference record and no wins over good teams, isn’t a “good team” in my book.

They beat the Division champ and finished 2nd in the division and should have won the division. They were good, especially considering the level of competition they were playing against.
All we have to do is beat one good team to be considered good. Other than Tulsa the only other team they beat with a winning record was a 6-5 UNM.

Did they play 3 teams that didn’t play the season before?
Does it matter? NMSU and FCS are supposed to be wins regardless if they played or not. Same goes to ODU. Back to back road games while traveling on allegiant 2000 miles. How do we know that if they played they only win one game?

If we beat utsa at home we're a good team.

Depends on how the other games go. If UTSA is the only game we win the rest of the year, that’s not a good team.

If they go 6-6 and get blown out in the NM Bowl, that’s not a good team either.

I originally said they need to win 3 more. If one of those is UTSA they're automatically a good team. The 05 team got blow out in their bowl game.

They didn’t play 3 teams that didn’t play the season before. ODU and UTSA didn’t even have a team then. CUSA was still a respectable league then too. This year’s team might have won against TSU, Tulane, and Rice.

That's a weak rebuttal. Nmsu is awful. It wouldn't have mattered if BCU played or not. That should always be a win. Like I said we have no idea how bad ODU would have looked last season. Maybe it was a blessing in disguise for them. 1st year coaches in conference are underperforming this year.

Their record isn’t the point. Those players didn’t get a chance to get better and play. UTEP and other schools gave their players an opportunity to get better. ODU could have gone 0-10 last year, they would be “better” this year because their players played in actual games.

If they go 0-10 then wouldn't we expect to beat them? FIU went 0-5 last year and they don't look any better this season.

Yeah and we beat them by 7, at home and they flew two time zones and 2,000 miles away to give us a game. FAU gave FIU a beat down yesterday and we’re scraping by the worst of the worst.

We're not at FAU's level. Our HC wasn't poached by a P5 for winning and we didn't hire a HC that won at the G5 level but struggled at P5.

The '05 team was a different team the last quarter of the season. The team for the first three quarters of the season was a good team. They just absolutely fell apart.

In 2017 we were the worst team in College Football. The Coach quit 5 games in. We went on to win 2 games over the following 2 seasons. We are 7-6 since then. I like the direction we are heading.
Better, no doubt. Not sure if worth keeping Dimel around though.

MP and SK had the same flaw. Started their careers at UTEP good then flamed out. MP teams in season would win in the beginning and fizzle out once it got cold. I'm hoping DD is the opposite. Started losing but wins in the later years.
