Big 12 calling finalists and telling them that they will not expand. Not today, not ever. They are counting down until 2025 when Texas and Oklahoma bolt for greener pastures.

That being said, I guess UTEP has to get used to the idea of being in CUSA, unless of course we can talk BYU into going back to the MWC.

Sound move but sucks for UTEP. There are a lot of CUSA schools saying "Aw fudge!" this morning. I guess ODU's illusion of grandeur are put on hold.

To many political factions in the Big XII and the Gov. of Texas is throwing his hat in the ring. The BXII wants institutions who are very strong academically and bring an array of possibilities to the conference like UTAH and Colorado offered the PAC 12. UTAH has poured tons in sports and academics and do a ton in health research. Look at two polar opposites who were candidates for the BXII, Rice and Memphis. Rice academically speaking was a no brainer but the BXII said they don't want to have to "prop up" the major revenue programs, which Rice needs. Memphis brought FedEx sponsorship, money, a southeastern regional stake owned by the SEC but unlike Rice, not known as an academic school and put all their money in major revenue sports the last twenty plus years rather than academics and the owner of FedEx had to commit to give more to academics to make Memphis more attractive to the BXII. Kind of embarrassing, don't you think? The BXII said hell no to both schools. BYU needs to get over themselves. I think it's obvious the presidents of the BXII schools were whispering to themselves "if the PAC 12 didn't want them, why would we want them?"

Because BYU offers precisely the mix of athletics and academics that you say the BXII claims to want?

BYU has always been the pretiest girl at the bar in expansion. Problem is everyone knows the girl has herpes. The no play on Sunday is a huge problem. Its a giant pain for all sports except football. The pac12 wont take any school with a religous affiliation. Thats why BYU isnt and will never be in the PAC 12. Religion in general is not popular in academia but Mormonism is especially hated in academia. Really the big 12 was their only option for getting into a p5 conference.

BYU will never join another g5 conference. If Utah wasnt in the Pac 12, BYU might join a g5 conference. However, they will never willingly join a conference lower than little brother's. Independence helps them carry on with their dillusions of gradeur. They can easily finance independence.

The next 8 years are going to be transformational for college athletics as we know it. The importance of developing your programs now and being at a high level of competition in 2025 will be the difference between being with the halves, languishing with the have nots or collapsing into oblivion. UTEP needs to get its head out of its arse today if we are to compete when the landslide comes down. We need every available dollar to go into athletics, coaching salaries, travel and facilities to be able to compete or we're missing the boat yet again. And the next one, might be the last.
