FIRE DIMEL

El Paso has given up on UTEP. That’s what happens when your Football team wins 2 games in 3 years and your basketball team struggles to make the Conference Tournament.
This statement isn't true. If it was then why was their a sellout for the N. Texas game and for the NMSU Basketball game. El Paso wants to believe, but has been disappointed. The fact that they gave UTEP a chance to prove if there's something to believe in proves that point. Also you're post is out of date and doesn't represent the last 2 years for football or basketball with new coach. Maybe you and the Miner fans like you that have completely given up are stuck in 1987-1988. Which don't get me wrong was a really good year to a Miner Fan! Not saying the Hope meter is very high rn, but the whole city hasn't given up like you're saying!

Director Senter,

It is time for a change at the UTEP head football coach position. It is quite clear that Coach Dana Dimel is not getting the job done. Five years is more than enough time for Coach Dimel and his staff to prove themselves as successful coaches. Not only is Coach Dimel losing games but more importantly he is losing the diminishing fan base. I truly believe Dana Dimel is a gentleman and a good person, and a very good leader of young men. But that trait has not brought about enough wins to keep the fans coming to home games much less traveling to see the Miners play at out of town venues. Everyone knows that a successful football program pays the bills for a university athletic program. Success = increase in attendance = larger fan base = more money = better recruiting = improved recognition for the university = more and improved recognition for the community = university and community pride, which will repeat the process over the years if there is an energetic and inspiring coach for the players which positively infects the fan base. All of this is missing at UTEP with the current state of the UTEP Miner Football Program and Athletic Department.

UTEP is being left behind by past and current athletic opponent programs. UTSA and NMSU are proof of that. UTSA left us in the dust in football and NMSU has sustained success in basketball while UTEP stagnates or deteriorates. MY fear now is that when the new members like Sam Houston State and NMSU come into the conference next season, they will outperform UTEP on the football field.

It is clear to most UTEP fans that we desperately need a new and super enthusiastic head football coach to bring winning football games as a new norm to UTEP and El Paso.

Lame letter. And, you don't speak for the UTEP fanbase.

Sorry dude, but those games "might" have been sold in sales, but zero chance the fans bought them. I would guess around 30k for the UNT game, and maybe 7k for NMSU. Corporate sponsors bought all the seats and by the looks of it, they couldn't give them away either.

Either way if city gave up completely there wouldn't have even been 30 thousand and 7 thousand right? And basketball is in it's infancy under a new exciting coach so it can't be said the city has given up yet. Especially if he gets this team going to the NCAA by next year. Faith lost in Dimel maybe, that's fair, but 12 wins in last 2 years in football and a winning home record is still more than football is used to. Not happy with it, cause they should've done better this year, just don't agree the whole city has completely given up like the post said.

I really don't get the "fire Senter" because of the Dimel hire/extension. Our program was a dumpster fire and Dimel sold him on a total rebuild. Dimel got us to a bowl game and no matter how you spin it, that's worth a reward and some sign of support.
I feel Senter has done a pretty good job overall, on the surface. Most of his hires have been fairly decent. I think his pricing schemes are way too aggressive. Although some on here believe he is a bad fundraiser, we just don't know this to be true. Just because you don't go to breakfast at the Riviera every Sunday morning with Vandenburg, or lunch at G & R with Foster doesn't mean relationships aren't there. The school athletes APR is much higher now than when he came on board.
Furthermore, where is the "Wilson doesn't care about athletics and won't fire anyone" come from? Has she neen a president before and have a track record? Haven't you seen her at most home events? Isn't her job to make sure people under her do their jobs and not do it for them just because you aren't happy? Good lord, she's been here 3 years.

Dimel must go. Period.

I thought we won 11 in 2 years?

Entire city? no. MOST of the city, yes. You don't see the UTEP swag anymore. As much as it was pushes (which by our standards was amazing) getting only 30k/7k shows how little the city cares.

IF the hoops continues to improve, I could see 8k in the stands in late jan/early feb.

Senter should be fired on the whole we need a 5 year rebuilt bs.

UTEP had won 16 games in the four years prior to Dimel. NMSU had won 8 games in the four years prior to Kill.

Both sound like dumpster fires. In year one Kill won 5 games and might go bowling. In year 5 Dimel won 5 games and isn't going bowling.

F that notion that it takes forever to build at UTEP.

The program is in a MUCH better place now than when Dimel came on board. They did not have the ultimate results they hoped, but he built a team that was good enough to compete for a conference championship. The in game coaching is another thing. I think he has a similar problem to jimbo fisher at A&M. He should focus on being more of a ceo head coach and give complete control to an OC so he can focus on recruiting, roster management, and managing the game, which he has been god awful in. If he can’t do that, then yes it may be time for a change because this was their year to make a run. They were experienced, deep at some positions, and had some real talent on both sides of the ball. Won’t be the case next year unless they recruit better than they ever have.

I think it’s much easier to build a winner quickly now than it was 5 years ago with the transfer portal. Just how it’s much harder to maintain a roster over 4-5 years and develop guys. NMSU should never have a better football program than Utep.

Why is it a lame letter? Speaks the truth. The empty stadium proves it. If Utep doesn’t address the coaching problem next year will be worse. Hell they will probably have trouble getting food trucks to come in for the games.

Yea. Riley made USC into a national contender in one off season.

Dimel’s first game was 17,000. And Kuglers last season had low attendance as well.

People act like we averaged 30,000 and now it’s 12,000 because of the offense. Attendance has been bad for years.

Look at the games with the biggest numbers. $9.15 seats. EPISD free ticket night. NMSU games.

The Student sections have been reduced in size and are still empty.

We have a new basketball Coach and only twice last year attendance was over 6000.

I know you don’t live here? But Cowboys gear outnumbers UTEP gear 5000-1. UTEP has almost no support.

The proof is in the numbers, the Miners are selling tickets to approximately 2% of the El Paso population and the student body free tickets aren’t much better.

I agree with this, but it's not gonna happen.

Diminishing fan base ? LOL. Were you at the games at the end of the Kugler era ?

And you trust Senter to make a great football hire? I don’t.

Presidents at big time athletics schools are very involved — especially in raising $$$ for athletics. It ain’t about being at games.

Yes Vegasminer, I might be a shitty fan but I least I'm a fan who wants for UTEP to improve and get out of Conference USA before the likes of Sam Houston State, NMSU, and Texas State to leave us behind for a better conference. I don't think keeping Dimel as coach will make it possible for that to happen.

Might be? Nah, you and yours are in fact shitty fans.

We should worry about what UTEP is doing poorly rather than about what the new members to the conference are doing well.

Seems like 99% of the people on here agree with you. The whole board must be shitty fans for not wanting the program to be run into the ground the same way the rah rah fans wanted Price to have more years. Maybe it is the Rah Rah fans that are ok with not winning a bowl game since 1967, but I am sure as heck am not.

This team has the signs of Price 2.0, and we can't throw away another 4 years to rebuild it.

It felt nice for a few minutes to act like a big boy football school. Oh well back to reality.
