First UTEP Fan Council Meeting

I agree 110% with UTEP's complacency and lack of vision holding it back. I've been very very vocal about that. However, part of the complacency has been the propping up of the NMSU rivalry. Numbers dont lie subce 2000 NMSU has never been the highest attended home football game in any season. Its is very rarely if ever the highest attended basketball game. NMSU does not move the needle for most UTEP fans.

As for complacency the rivalry with NMSU just adds to complacency.New Mexico is a poor state. They can't support two d-1 programs. UNM is the flagship and will always be the stronger better funded program. NMSU faces barriers that will always hold them down. I'm very impressed with what they've done there lately, Mocia will get a job at a p5 school in the next year. However, that's the ceiling for their success, no conference for football is huge problem. Even if Stull was running thr status quo for the next ten years we would beat them consistently in football. The November hoops games are utterly meaningless. NMSU is like having a small guy on the block to pick on. You can be lazy sit on your ass all day and still kick that guys ass. Meanwhile all the other guys on the the block are working out and more often than not kicking your ass. To divert attention from your obvious shortcomings and to prevent making the changes neccessary to compete you constantly highlight you can still beat the little guy. That's what UTEP has done through the years. Dont look at everyone else kicking our ass passing us by, look at the fact we can still beat NMSU, the status quo is fine.

From a business prospective propping up a non existent rivalry is dumbest fu***** thing I've ever heard of. El Paso is a small market. Its smaller than the Rio grande valley market and has tv market smaller than Waco's. The good thing is that UTEP dominates the market. The bad thing is that by propping up a non existent rivalry with NMSU they give them a piece of small market they shouldn't have. El Paso is a small market dont share it. If UTEP quit playing NMSU it would severely damage NNSU's finances and diminish their local coverage. That's just common sense take as much market share as possible kill off the small competitors. You dont share a market especially a small one with a smaller competitor and give them market share.
We discussed the rivalry issue at the fan council meeting and one valid point was made: NMSU vs UTEP does not sell out for either school home or away. It is our fault when we from UTEP fail to travel 45 mins up the road to support our teams against NMSU. We could overpower their little quaint stadium and out tailgate their parkibg lot to nake it seem like a home game, but alas, we dont. Why? I am on the fan council and a UTEP grad but I am from Penn State Country and we never have these problems even though State College, Pa aka Happy Valley is in the middle of nowhere. If we truly desire NMSU to be our rival we on the UTEP side need to push the train and show up to enjoy the a$$ kicking! We need to overpower them at every chance with our spirit, our voices, and make their statdium and ours when we play them a true sea of orange. If only because we both are geographically in the middle of nowhere. Distance makes starting rivalries hard.

Are you sure it’s not the coaches and AD fault for only producing one winning season in the last 12 years? Or for getting swept by NMSU numerous times during the TF era. Very few fans are going to make a trip to a “rival” school to see us lose.

That’s right. Blaming the fans for not showing up after numerous losing seasons is not a valid excuse. UTEP is in the place they’re in because of the past AD and his choices, not because of people not going to NMSU games.

So, winning=rivalry on and losing=staying at home?

Carimflow makes a good point, we would make that a literal home game every year if we wanted too. Also, since he’s familiar with penn st (which is in the middle of nowhere like Boise, Manhattan KS, etc) I’m sure they sell out or are at 70-90% capacity in a losing season.

Then again, “we’re not penn st (insert team name here)” is the automatic fall back argument that doesn’t solve anything

Nord vs Samuel. Price vs. Mumme. Both during first and or second year of their respective tenure as HC. Produced some exciting games. UTEP football was fired up because the UTEP seniors got their coach in Gary Nord and NMSU came into the Sun Bowl after upsetting ASU at ASU. The Sun Bowl was full, loud and crazy. Samuels (now at UNLV as D line assistant) had the option/bone hitting on all cylinders and UTEP had a hell of time stopping it (which is historically typical for UTEP).

Price's second year, Mumme was first year HC at NMSU. UTEP hired Price the year before and trounced NMSU and UNM was renovating and doing well so NMSU, in an act of desperation, fired Samuels and hired Mummy "The Dummy" who had some relative success at Kentucky, depending on who you ask. UTEP had former UCLA standout Tyler Ebell and NMSU big boosters ponied up their cash for a live regional TV broadcast. Aggie Memorial sold out or almost sold out and only LC High and Mayfield High accomplished that at Memorial Stadium. Fans on both sides were yelling at each other. UTEP took control and an Aggie booster was heard on TV in a stunned voice "This is not what I expected...". Mumme did go on to own Price for a while and the rivalry got heated. There were fights in the stands, a few blows thrown in parking lots but UTEP took control of the series and Coach Martin kept the rivalry civil and it cooled to point and ticket sales plummeted big time.

That may change for 2018.

Isn’t that the way it works for any G5 team? Winning equals full Sun Bowl/Don Haskins. Losing equals half empty stadiums. If both teams are winning then there will be mutual interest to attend the game. When only one team is winning the other fan base isn’t as motivated to travel.

Those were the days. Best (hated) memory was some kid ringing that damn cowbell for 3 1/2 quarters behind me

To whomever went to the town hall tonight please let us know what was said. There will be those who will never be happy, however no AD has done what Senter has done. I would have been there but stuff at Dallas needed to be attended to.

As far as the trolls, I hope you’re there. I hope you put your complaints and grievince and whining there so it’s on the record and answered.

You were going to travel to El Paso just to attend the meeting?

The NMSU game is definititely a rivalry, at least it gets heated. I attended the Cedric Lang game when UTEP made that big comeback up in Cruces. People were yelling and cursing at me, telling me to go back to Juarez, yelling "JUTEP". I was surprised by the racism and anger. I thought it was a friendly, insignificant, game.

The rivalry hasn't been heated for awhile.

There are only two games, one in each sport, I remember being heated with NMSU. They were both in Las Cruces. The basketball game in the November 2003 in Las Cruces, Billy's second season. It was a big crowd in The Pan AM over 12000 about 500 short of being a sell out. Their fans were all in white and had those inflatable thundersticks. It was a great atmosphere for college basketball. We won the game that was the only rivalry like feel I've ever experienced in hoops game with NMSU.

The one in football was the first of the two game losing streak Price had to Mumme U think it was in 2008. The game didnt start off heated but as the game went on their fans got raucaus and when they won they stormed the field and there were some things thrown, cars vandalized, alot of trash talk. Tough game we lost. I think that's the game Braxton Amy had a 105 yr int return for a touchdown I believe that's the longest int return in UTEP history.

Those are the only two games I recall ever being heated. Outside of that nothing that resembles a rivalry.

Oh I dunno. Flipping off UTEP fans by Neil McCarthy. Making the visiting team use the porta potties by Mumme. Mumme putting down UTEP because they have a nice stadium in the Sun Bowl? (now that was one of few Mumme bizzaro stories while at NMSU). Bob Stull wanted to put a hold on rivalry but both side biatched loudly. A former UTEP linebacker having to being escorted out of Aggie Memorial after going on to the sideline, ripping his shirt off and taunting NMSU fans in the stands (I think that was Price's second year). Randy with a nice big ol "L" for the NMSU bench after a UTEP win at NMSU. LOL! Ahhhh...stupid but funny memories.

Keep the rivalry, look for ways to strengthen Texas rivalries. NMSU could have easily dropped the basketball rivalry for the last few years, but they didn't. Las Cruces is basically becoming a suburb of El Paso; why put a kabosh on it?

I wish there was a smoking room for marijuana at the Sun Bowl and Haskins Center. There should be a room where we can go take a break and smoke it up.
When it is legalized in the State of Texas... then I will recommend your suggestion to the Arhletics Department snd the Fan Council

I have a question that I would like brought up at the fan counsel:

IMG was mentioned in another thread and made me think about this. UTSA has recently parted ways with IMG, is there any possibility that UTEP starts exploring other options as well?

I think you are talking about Ibok Ibok. He was a crazy and impressive dude.

Go Miners...

It might be wishful thinking that this can be accomplished at both Kidd Field and the Sun Bowl without extra money (i.e. taxpayers?):

Have a partial roof like Fisht Stadium in Sochi, which would bring much needed shade on a hot day and inclement weather.

I hope you are joking.

Also, taxpayers wouldn't fund it.

This is probably a little outside the scope of Fan Council, but maybe they can get into the right ears. It's been a while since there has been even a decent selection of UTEP New Era fitted caps. I want to represent my school, but I'm not a fan of "dad caps". Just bringing back the old designs that used to be sold at the bookstore and the local Lids shops would be an upgrade from what's available now. More options in UTEP apparel in general would be nice.

Hey! Watch it with the "Dad caps" remarks!

Might need to send you out for sensitivity training.

Pure definition of bandwagon fans... my point exactly thanks

Why don’t you post a picture with all the ticket stubs from the games you’ve attended the past seven years?

Purplefire is t-shirt fan of Oregon and Baylor. Its hilarious he would label someone else a bandwagon fan.

I don’t see what’s wrong with liking other colleges. Big deal if he likes Oregon and Baylor.

It's exactly whats wrong with UTEP. Too many dont want to donate to help UTEP. They would rather be t-shirt fans of other schools. It's really indicative of El Paso sad but not at all suprising.

Sorry, jdubb66. You and I think alike on multiple topics, but this hat design looks like ghetto wannabe.

Reminds me of my weasel nephew in Colorado. He fancies himself quite the stylish dude from the 'hood. Instead, he's just an average whiteboy more concerned about showing out for his punk-ass friends than training up and getting a real job.

I'm in the market for more UTEP gear. What else can you show us?

That hat looks fine. I'm not sure what you are complaining about.
