Tony Sanchez became the head coach at UNLV before the 2015 season and his only college coaching experience was as a GA at NMSU for one year. The rest of his coaching experience was in high school including a year as WR coach at Irvin HS in El Paso. As head coach at Bishop Gorman HS in Las Vegas, NV he coached them to 6 straight state championships and then was hired to be the head man at UNLV. Who is the best HS FB coach in El Paso? Not suggesting UTEP take this route but it's so rare that I thought it was interesting.

His team at UNLV is improving and does score points. They knocked off Wyoming recently, the team that's leading the MWC MTN division.

It looks like he is going to be successful, however it should be noted that Notre Dame and North Texas tried this route and both programs were set back years for their decision. We tried it back in the Gil Bartosh days and it had mixed results. Best coach in EP is hard to figure, there are a handful of programs who win consistently but really no big standouts. And just because the are top dog in EP means little when they head to the playoffs and often are not remotely competitive with schools who appear to have superior talent, coaching and programs.

1) To answer you question about area HS football, I lump it in as a region (west Texas from EP to Odessa/Midland) with southern New Mexico included and the best coach IMO, is Coach Bradley at Mayfield High in Las Cruces. Mayfield just flat out owned El Paso schools this past year.

2) If you come to UTEP, what offense will he employ? Do you believe in JUCO recruiting? This is something UTEP has gone away from in large part, but not totally, under Price and Kugler. Tanner Stallings was the last JUCO recruit to fill in the center position to fill that immediate need. However, Stull went the JUCO route with some success when he was head coach at UTEP and those after him had varied success with it at certain positions. How do you feel being under constant scrutiny from the outside or media? This is not OU, Alabama or Auburn type 24/7 surveillance, name the newborn after the starting qb that fans and media do with those schools, but then again our current coach has gotten testy with media at his morning pressers when questioned, and has publicly stated he is satisfied with just the core fans in the stands (when asked about the huge drop in attendance for home games; not exactly a way to build a FBS programs in a municipality with 700,000 plus people that has only AAA baseball to compete against). Where are your assistance coming from? Will you retain some?

According to this article, now might be the time for Stull to pull the trigger on Kugler because maybe, UTEP can land someone who is a really, really good FBS (assistant) coach waiting to move up to a P5 conference but with nothing availabe (but will book immediately with his first recruiting class that become junior or seniors if successful, a la Bob Stull, this is nothing new). According to this article, there are a ton of great coaches but not many jobs (the best will go to Texas or Oregon) so AD's may have some leverage going into 2017 if they pull the trigger now.

That would be a disaster. If you're trying to UAB a program bring in a high school guy. This year we're at just over 13,000 season ticket holders, which isnt a good number. Hire a high school coach they would be lucky to sell 5000 season tickets next year.

Sanchez at UNLV coached Bishop Gorman. Which is one of the top five high school programs in the country. The main reason he was hired at UNLV was the relationships he built with billionaire benefactors to bishop gorman. UNLV is in desperate need of facilities upgrades. Their administration saw Sanchez's connection to billionaires as a plus and a way to jumpstart facility upgrades.

No one is suggesting going after a high school coach. As for season ticket sales next year, if Kugler is still here it could be an all time low.

David Carr and the carr family are coaching high school in California. Saw this in MNF. I bet they have good connections in California.

Unless we have a complete house cleaning of both revenue sports, season ticket and ticket sales period will continue to drop dramatically. Hoops isnt going to average 6000 fans a game this year. If Kugler's back football falls below 20,000 average attendance next year.

Too early to make that call on basketball this year just yet.
