It’s been a while since we’ve seen this level of bb in EP

It’s up to the UTEP players and coaches to give them reasons to become passionate fans.

Uh yeah, that’s why I said the team needs to consistently win and let the new generations build their own culture.

I think you don’t understand my post. If the team consistently wins, the student section will be a hot ticket, they’ll wanna come to the games. And then they will become rowdy, wild and build their own culture and their own traditions. These kids are the viral generation, and frankly don’t give a damn what it used to be like. Their response to being told this is how we were in the 80’s would be OK BOOMER.

Same thing happened during my undergrad and grad years (05-12) and way before “snowflake” and “boomer” became a thing

Yup, "Ok, Boomer" is the clapback du jour. But you know what? Those same kids have yet to show they know how to get rowdy. They could learn a thing or 80 thousand from us Boomers.

::Millenial "Ok, Boomer" clapback coming at me in 3, 2, ...::

I’ve been on this board since 2008, and I wonder how many regular posters are under 35. This is a big problem for the fandom, the younger fans are just not passionate about the team. We have to consistently win and let the new generations build their own culture. The only tradition that really deep down matters is that we play DEFENSE here at UTEP. The students don’t give a damn bout the Amen chant and what it was like in the 80’s. Real talk.

This is actually pretty accurate. Most students weren't even born when the "Amen" chant and other 80s staples were around. They have no clue that it even existed. Times have changed. "Picks Up" didnt exist until the 90s and took years to catch on. Bottom line is the older fans can brag about the good old days, but the current students don't care. Many weren't even alive when Coach Haskins retired.

Alright old timers. A couple of friends and I tried to get Aggies Suck chants going on Tuesday night. There has been stigma of UTEP sucks ,or we never win so why go. Tuesday night was the first step to why it is great to go. It is a pain to get students to stand the whole game and sit during timeouts and at half. We did it for the first time in awhile. No one does the 80's chants anymore, and if you would like to bring those back get students involved. Talk athletics or get a student to bring up to SGA. Another option is talk to the pep band, they are good at starting chants. Regarding the going up and down the stairs, that is allowed anymore, due to security staff being strict. Basketball games are always fun, Tuesday night was great, so here's to hoping for more games like that this season.

I think a big issue with the crowd is the age factor. There were a lot of 55+ in the crowd, from what I saw, and most of them were sitting with their arms crossed every time the camera zoomed in on the fans.

Most of the people getting excited about the team are fans who were there during the good years. Obviously, you can't expect a lot of the older folk to be jumping in their seats and screaming the whole game.

UTEP just needs to keep winning consistently, so they can market to the younger generation of fans who have no real connection to the program. Most of them have only known this program to be subpar. Hopefully they come around.

What I do find interesting is that the smaller crowds tend to be louder and more energetic. Maybe it's because the overall ratio of hardcore fan vs casual fan is better, which helps feed the energy. Hard to get the energy around you going, when there are more casual fans who are going to sit quietly, no matter what's going with the game

If you’re calling the older fans “casual,” that’s a mistake. They may not be loud, but they’ve been the loyal attendees and season ticket buyers through the lean years.

"Aggies suck" is childish. "DEFENSE!" at tip-off until the opponent scores is ageless. It's a call for our team to shut down the opponent right from tip-off. "UTEP! UTEP! UTEP!" or something else. Just stay away from words like "suck," "fu-ck," "dick," "pu-ssy," "a$$," "pu-to," etc. No need for those at the games.

Not at all what I'm saying.

. I'm just saying the larger crowds naturally have more casuals, which is why it may be difficult to bring the energy up. Not many people want to go crazy, when so many others around them are sitting quietly

Now that I'm thinking about it, 55+ is probably the wrong number anyway. Much of the crowd seemed closer to 70.

Not a bad thing, but those folks have already "been there, done that". They're not going to be the one's bringing the energy. UTEP needs more students, and younger crowds in general to get excited about the program. They'll create three next wave of energy, and hopefully carry that on into the future

Ok, after reading the threads above I saw students dressed up and cheering and older ones cheering as well. The crowd was subdued at times but IMO, NMSU were canning some sweet stroking 3's to quiet the crowd when UTEP did something good. Then towards the end it got loud as UTEP clearly pulled away after solid defensive stops.

Can we stop with the negative political name calling, please?

This is closer to reality. That said, are Millennials up to the challenge? I have yet to see that type of energy in Millennials. I really hate to sound like I'm knocking any particular age group but I just don't see it. Millennials seem more chill. More concerned -- rightly -- with societal and financial issues. We Boomers had similar concerns but it just *feels* different with Millennials.

I need to sign up for this class. I want to hear the Amen chant everyone always talks about. And I also want to see the Miner Manics running up and down the stairs. I can’t find any videos of it on YouTube.
Make it happen Corona.

The Amen chant sucks. 80s weren’t that great either. Move on and make something better.

Our new president; together with CRT needs to formulate a mandatory class for ALL students and other newbees to attend. The class will show videos of me and all the other "old timers" that stood, jumped, yelled, jeered, sang and maybe shouted out some juicy names back in the 60's, 70's and 80's and didn't stop till the game ended. The class would be called, " How to be a crazed Miner idiot at a basketball game".
Those were the days my friends.

There is absolutely zero chance of that happening. With the course load some of these students already have there would be an uproar if they had to attend a mandatory Spirit class. The orange and blue Spirit crew is still very young, but an early attempt at bringing back student involvement at games and giving them Prime seating

Every generation is different, but I don't think this is some generational issue. This is the direct result of recent history. For most of these (college) kid's conscious lives, UTEP has not been a school worthy to be proud of. Therefore, the energy/passion simply isn't there....yet.

That can change quickly with some wins over high profile programs, or a good showing in the NCAA tournament. They'll get loud once this team gives them a reason to.
