UTEP played at BYU on September 17, 1988. It was the first conference game of the season for both teams. BYU dominated the 1st quarter but in the 2nd quarter the Miners took advantage of several BYU miscues to lead the game at halftime.
In the second half, UTEP added a field goal in the 3rd quarter and were able to hold BYU scoreless; however, UTEP had a couple of long drives thwarted in the 3rd and 4th quarters due to interceptions deep in BYU territory. BYU took advantage in the 4th quarter and scored 2 touchdowns to beat the Miners 31 - 27.
